Honolulu prosecutors say Kalihi fatal stabbing was self-defense

Honolulu prosecutors said a 27-year-old Kalihi man who fatally stabbed his roommate Monday night was acting in self-defense and will not face a murder charge.

At about 8:22 p.m. Monday, the man was approached by his roommate, identified as 57-year-old Maria Bolter, who was holding a knife, according to a news release from the city Prosecuting Attorney’s office Wednesday night.

The woman made “stabbing gestures” toward the man who used a knife to defend himself, prosecutors said.

“After a thorough review of all the evidence and facts surrounding this case, we have concluded a charge of murder is not warranted,” Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm said in the news release. “The defendant’s actions were found to be consistent with a legal claim of self-defense.”

Prosecutors said the man “reasonably believed that deadly force was necessary to protect himself from death or serious bodily injury.” They said the man had no legal duty to retreat since they were roommates.

The Prosecuting Attorney’s office said it considers the case closed.

Strict gun control in Hawaii has certainly paid off in reducing violent attacks.

Police investigate Orchid Drive death; no charges filed, evidence points to self-defense

by Kristen Moorhead
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that happened on Orchid Drive.

WSPD officers responded to the 4200 block of Orchid Drive around 2:06 a.m. on Monday morning, September 15, in reference to reports of a shooting.

Authorities say that Jonathan Latel Smith, 44, was located by responding officers and was suffering from a gunshot wound. Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to officials, evidence collected by the Crime Investigations Division suggests that Smith was in a violent physical altercation with members of his family, and a person in the house used a firearm to stop Smith’s behavior.

All involved in the situation are cooperating with investigators, per the authorities.

All involved with the exception of Mr. Smith.

You saw in the Blues Brothers, but someone did it for real… jumped an open drawbridge (evading cops no less) and got away:

Also off-topic, but may elicit strong comments from veterans… Starbuck’s thinks “world-class customer service” will make people but $7 coffee:

They will. I remember a coworker who swore he would quit when smokes hit $1 a pack (he had earlier said that about $.50 and $.75.) Saw him one day without a pack in his pocket and asked him what price finally drove him to quit – he said “half of my left lung.”
And in a machine they are now $12 a pack?

The only problem is that Starbucks hires a lot of unstable people that can’t last a 5-hour shift. How are they going to provide the superior service they offer?
