Habemus Papam
I semi-joked the other day about the Littoral Combat Ships before the old Pope died…well, this time it is serious. Robert Francis Prevost, from Chicago, IL will become the first North American-born pope in history, and will take the name Leo XIV.
Prevost, 69, was born in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1955. His father, Louis Marius Prevost, a school administrator and World War II naval veteran, was of French and Italian descent; the family of his mother, Mildred Martinez, originally hailed from Spain. In addition to English, the new pope speaks Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese; he can read Latin and German.
Prevost is an Augustinian, meaning he belongs to a Catholic order known for its commitment to community and sharing. He is also the first Augustinian pope, according to the Vatican.
Prevost attended secondary school at an Augustinian seminary and officially joined the order in 1977, when he was 22. In between, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Villanova University. Five years later, Prevost was awarded a Master of Divinity degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and he traveled to the Augustinian College of Saint Monica in Rome to be ordained. Prevost later received a doctorate in canon law from Rome’s Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.
Expect the ignorantoii who pass for journalists to list him as the “first American pope” – sorry, folks, the recently departed Francis was the first American (South – born in Argentina), the first Jesuit pope, and the first from the Southern Hemisphere.
The speed with which the conclave nominated Prevost – er, Leo – denotes a pretty united college of cardinals – a vote of 2/3 majority of the 133 cardinals eligible to vote is needed. The longest conclave lasted almost three years, but that was in the 1300 – most modern conclaves have been relatively quick.

Prevost went on to spend much of his adult life abroad. While preparing his doctoral thesis, he was sent to the Augustinian mission in Chulucanas, Piura, Peru. He returned to Peru in 1988 and spent the next 10 years leading the Augustinian seminary in Trujillo; he also taught canon law, served as an ecclesiastical judge, and led his own congregation. He eventually became a naturalized citizen there.
From 1999 to 2014, Prevost worked in Chicago, where he first led the city’s Augustinian Province and then served two six-year terms as head of the Augustinians. Like other cardinals, he has been criticized for his dealings there with priests accused of sexual abuse.
Prevost returned to Peru in 2014; Pope Francis soon named him bishop. Until Francis’s death, Prevost “held one of the most influential Vatican posts, running the office that selects and manages bishops globally,” according to the New York Times.

Goot Lawd, da Papal chikin’ be comin’ home’ta’roost.
I’ll wait and see. The Pope hasn’t done anything yet, other than offer prayers. He was elected by mostly liberals appointed by Francis. He comes from liberal Chicago too. He lives in Peru as a naturalized citizen in a liberal country by choice. But that does not mean he’s doesn’t have views favorable to capitalism or conservative values.
He has posted many things on social media critical of Trump over the years, especially on immigration.
This likely earned him the spot.
Jimbo Jazz, there is no way you said your last sentence with a straight face.
I didn’t know if anyone would notice that statement . I like to see if anyone is actually thinking about what is written. I was being sarcastic in a nice way! And laughing too!
He’s a continuation of the last pope:
I have heard that his first act by papal decree was that all communion wafers will now be deep dish.
Libtard..
A little papal humor:

Pope Leo XIV,
Advance the cause of Christ.
That is all.
I had to laugh at this…
Here ya go(from earlier)
The Bee has been having a field day:

Santa Claise rules says it was supposed to be JD Vance.
Commie, a bit off topic, but I posted this on the Trans issue earlier in the week and you didn’t see it.
This post is a question for Commie. Commie, I need you to explain something to me. But before I ask my question, I must add that I’m a bit surprised that no one seems to have this same thought. In regard to trannies (the weirdo type not the vehicular gearbox), but…….why is it that the people on your team all think it’s just awesome for trans woman to play girls sports and beat the crap out of them, but no one is clamoring for the next trans man NFL Middle Linebacker or offensive tackle? I mean, I for one would pay dearly to see the first 6’5″, 330-pound trans man OT all pumped up on testosterone whooping ass on a, as you call them, cis-gendered 6’6″ 280-pound defensive end. Now Commie, I know it will never happen, and I think even you know it will never happen and it’s a ridiculous notion. Don’t you agree? Well, assuming you do agree, why do you and your ilk think the idea of trans woman playing girls sports is peachy keen when everyone with an ounce of brain cells know they have an inherited advantage over actual woman? Heck, even Joe Biden probably really does believe this fact even though his people make him say the opposite. What say you Commie?
And, more Bee stories:

I’ll reserve judgment, but I’m not yet sanguine about this selection.
Another communist pope. Who the hell leaves America for Peru?
I expect the Church of Biden to sink even lower.
And btw, that was a brilliant observation by JD Vance.
Missionaries.
Ok. Good point.
From what little I’ve read so far, it sounds like a case of, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”
He isn’t a Jesuit which should in theory be a huge swing back. Francis was unique in that regard and there likely won’t be another for a while.
A couple of things that Francis got right was the reduction in RHIP creature comforts in the church and he rooted out some of the corruption with the first prosecutions in centuries. Baby steps to be sure but steps in the right direction.
Thought with Jesuitical background Francis would have been more conservative, was disappointed.
I believe a lot of people felt the same.
Jesuits are well-known liberals since the 1950s~ early ’60s!! More than a few might be conservative, but the overall view is that they are more “social justice” vice liturgical warriors.
Leo? Rather odd name choice. Kinda like Bob or Jack etc.
A distinguished Papal name – note he is the 14th to use it. Military guys should like it: the original Leo is known as the “warrior Pope”.
The name is good, now he needs to live up to it.. and being a favorite of Francis definitely casts doubts on the likelihood of that… but time will tell.
Julius II was the “warrior Pope.” Leo I (Leo the Great) was from an aristocratic family; as Pope, he negotiated with Atilla to turn back from Italy.
I think Vinny would be good for a Brooklyn Pope – Pope Vinny Bag O’ Donuts
While I understand the desire to claim Pope Francis as from the “Americas” his nationality was not American, he was Argentinian. Pope Leo is in fact the first Pope from the nation of America, as in the United States of. By birth Pope Leo is an American. One could also say since he has dual citizenship he is also “Peruvian” but not by birth or nationality. Personally, I do not take “pride” in his being an American as I had nothing to do with it, it being an accident of birth.
I am hoping Pope Leo is more conservative than Pope Francis was. IMO opinion he went into far more secular areas than was warranted. His position regarding lgbt etc etc was counter to biblical teachings IMO. Forgive the sinner but criticize the sin is more in line with the teachings of Mother Church. I also disliked his position regarding the invasion of the US by illegal aliens. In that regard he did not render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar’s.
I was hoping for a based African Pope who would stand up against the alphabet freaks.
I know he’s not Catholic, but anyone heard of Pastor Ssempa? He’s pretty hilarious
I was hoping for Cdl. Sarah.
It’s great that Leo XIV is from Chicago (my home town)!
It sucks, however, that he is a fan of the White Sox. Sheesh.
Why can’t these Popes just stick to religion and stay out of politics? I’m Catholic and this crap always did piss me off about them. Hey Pope, who cares what you think about politics. Stick to the issues within the Church, like why are a lot of these wonderful old churches in the cities closing down due to lack of attendance? And why are a lot of old private, Catholic schools shutting their doors? Huh?
They are shutting down due to empty pews …. mostly because of the “Spirit of Vatican II”, emphasis on social justice vice strong catechesis, suppression of the Holy Mass in Latin, and the Protestantization of the Mass (yes, they actually had Protestant “advisors” when re-doing the Mass; that is why the “kingdom-power-glory” doxology is now included).
I’d also say that taking the mystery out of the Eucharist is also a factor, and distributing Holy Communion by those whose hands are not consecrated (nuns, laymen, lay-women). AND …. communion in the hand — which is more like self-communication. We need to go back to universal communion on the tongue while kneeling. (Our church has kneelers and a communion rail).
I strongly dislike the current Order of Mass; thank goodness our parish is run by a more traditional order of priests from Argentina, so even the Novus Ordo Mass is reverent with use of Latin and maintaining the Greek “Kyrie”.
Sorry for the rant.
rgr1480, out.
