Dakota Meyer reups with the USMCR

Dakota Meyer

It’s been a decade and a half since Dakota Meyer left active duty. Shortly after he left the service he was called back into uniform to go to the White House to get the Medal of Honor for his actions in Afghanistan during the Battle of Ganjgal in 2009. He’s now returning to the service, having signed up with the Marine Corps Reserves.

ABC News has the story;

Medal of Honor recipient reenlists in Marine Corps reserves after 15 years

Dakota Meyer, a Marine who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the Afghanistan War but later became a sharp critic of the Biden administration over its chaotic withdrawal from that conflict, is reenlisting in the military and will serve in the Marine Reserves.

In a briefing with reporters on Thursday before his reenlistment ceremony, Meyer said he is returning to military service after 15 years out of uniform because he felt he “had more to give.” He’s also close to President Donald Trump’s defense secretary, Pete Hegseth.

But Meyer said he would refrain from politics while in uniform.

“The great part about being in the reserves is I’m still a citizen when I’m not on orders,” he said. “When I’m on orders I’ll comply obviously with whatever the standard is.”

Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest honor, by then-President Barack Obama in 2011 for his heroics in Afghanistan when he charged five times in a Humvee into heavy gunfire to rescue comrades under attack by Taliban insurgents.

On Sept. 8, 2009, Meyer was part of a security team supporting a patrol moving into a village in the Ganjgal Valley. Suddenly, the lights in a nearby village went out and gunfire erupted. About 50 Taliban insurgents on mountainsides and in the village had ambushed the patrol.

His actions during the six-hour attack and firefight saved the lives of 36 people, both Americans and Afghans. He killed at least eight Taliban insurgents. Firing from a gun turret on top of a Humvee driven by a fellow Marine, he provided cover for his team, allowing many to escape likely death.

Four American soldiers died in the ambush: 1st Lt. Michael Johnson, 25, from Virginia Beach, Virginia; Staff Sgt. Aaron Kenefick, 30, of Roswell, Georgia; Corpsman James Layton, 22, of Riverbank, California; and Edwin Wayne Johnson Jr., a 31-year-old gunnery sergeant from Columbus, Georgia. A fifth man, Army Sgt. Kenneth W. Westbrook, 41, of Shiprock, New Mexico, died later from his wounds.

After leaving the military, Meyer remained in the spotlight. In 2016 he married former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol, and they had two children.

He’s been outspoken about the jailing of another Marine — Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller — who criticized the Biden administration for the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan in social media posts while in uniform, which is a violation of military conduct.

Only if it is against the woke narrative.

I think Scheller should have been fired but not gone to jail, just like what is happening with the bumper crop of TDS officers this year.

Scheller is now working at DOD as a civilian, since January 25th.

Nothing but respect for him, but unlike other military members that entered the public spotlight due to their achievements, he never got any traction or was in demand. He’s 36, twice divorced and I opine he’s returning to the service because he’s returning to his first love. He does not need to but definitely wants to. I hope he has great success in the Reserves.

Hack Stone

Heartbreak Ridge Redux. Wonder if when reporting for Reserve Duty he will have to hoof it from the back gate of Pendleton to the North end of base.

If her were going active he would. Reserves I think so too.

Before I did second retirement we had an officer trip for the Reserves after a 15 year break. Hilariously he went to BCT at age 45. What the kiddies must have thought of him, lol. Now he has just enough time to finish out and retire.

If he gets into trouble on drill weekend, Swede will intervene…

Green Thumb

Yeah.

I wish him the all the best but he has a bit of baggage.

Fuck that noise.

Best of Luck, Good Sir, on your future. Amazing the difference when one has a real CinC. Somehow I don’t see this Warrior Hero becoming besties with “DaNang Dick”, tho he may become involved with the “Toys for Tots” Program.

Having a MOH awardee in one’s reserve unit will certainly be interesting. I am all for what he is up to. Pretty sure his presence will be “disruptive” at some level. Can you imagine doing evaluations on the guy? Lol. Shows up in flip flops and beads…give him a 4.0 for military bearing! I imagine he will honor that medal and go high order on everything he does.

Retired Grunt

I am trusting that this Non Commissioned Officer will serve to the best of his ability. Godspeed. He certainly has nothing to prove, to ANYONE.
