U.S. troops have begun construction of a floating pier off the coast of Gaza with the intent to speed the flow of humanitarian aid when it becomes operational in May, the Pentagon said on Thursday. Joe’s String Pullers announced the pier in March as aid officials implored Israel to ease access for relief supplies into Gaza’s over land routes.
“I can confirm that U.S. military vessels, to include the USNS Benavidez, have begun to construct the initial stages of the temporary pier and causeway at sea,” Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder told reporters.
On Wednesday the site came under mortar attack from an unnamed militant group.

JERUSALEM — An under-construction pier for a U.S.-led project to bring aid into the Gaza Strip came under fire Wednesday, forcing U.N. officials to take shelter there, Israeli and U.N. officials said.
No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, which the Israelis described as a mortar shell attack.
Authorities said that no one was wounded.
The attack marks a shaky start to the construction of the pier, a project that the U.S. is spearheading to surge humanitarian aid into Gaza. A Hamas official told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the militant group will resist any foreign military presence involved with the port project.
While satellite photos show major port construction along the shore near Gaza City, aid groups are making it clear that they have broad concerns about their safety and reservations about how Israeli forces will handle security.
Another opportunity to excel seems to be unfolding exactly as expected. Israel had this remarkably bad idea forced on them and the onus is on them to provide safety and security? Aid groups should ask Joe’s String Pullers how that works, and then either provide for their own security or stay off of a large stationary target. This entire stunt is a result of knee-jerk reaction pandering to Hamas terror sympathizers loudly protesting Joe’s “ironclad support” for Israel.
In other international news US forces are withdrawing from Niger and Chad as those countries now align with Russia and the band plays on.
