HOUSTON — A man was killed Friday after getting into a shootout with Houston Police Department officers at an apartment complex near downtown Houston. This happened just before 6 p.m. at The Exchange apartment complex along Leona Street, which is just north of I-10 between North Main Street and Elysian Street.
HPD said its officers responded to an assault in progress call at a unit in the complex and when they knocked on the door and rang the doorbell the suspect opened the door and immediately opened fire on them.

The more “research” I do, reading use-of-force incident reports, watching bodycam and other footage, and theorizing as to what could have been done differently, the more disinterested I am in wearing a badge for a living. I’ve stated before the low pay and long hours a lot of Louisiana cops face. Our governor has even announced a state of emergency: Governor Landry Issues Executive Order: Declares State of Emergency Due to Officer Shortage in Louisiana | Office of Governor Jeff Landry. While I’m still open to volunteering and paying my own way through an academy to get POST-certified, I don’t think I’ll ever do any full-time policing.
That to get to this: “Defund the Police!” “ACAB!” “F12!” All have had an impact on the ability of police departments to do their jobs in a safe manner. When asked what my post-retirement plans were, I used to joke that I was going to become a cop, and likely end up dead or in prison within a year. Just a month ago, there was the incident in Houston where two female deputies mag dumped on a resident at an apartment complex when she approached the door with a gun in her hand. She survived, fortunately, and will likely get a big payout. Acorn Cop–supposedly a SF ODA commander who graduated from West Point and served for 10 years–mag-dumped on his own patrol SUV when he thought he was shot at by a handcuffed suspect.
Then you have the story above. HPD officers responding to a call and instantly taking gunfire. As much crap as the female deputies and Acorn Cop get, going home at night means you need to be hyper vigilant at all times. I just watched the footage yesterday of the murder of Las Cruces Officer Jonah Hernandez: Las Cruces Police Department releases video of Officer Hernandez’s deadly stabbing (msn.com). Seemingly routine trespass call gone horribly wrong. Even with the blurred bodycam footage you can tell that he was losing too much blood to survive.
^This^! Back yonder I had wanted to be a State Trooper. They were considered an Elite Force, had the sharpest uniforms, the fastest cars, and they toted a S&W Model 10 “Trooper”…in .38 Special. Alas, I didn’t meet the height and weight requirements (min 6’/180lbs). By the time these requirements were done away with (to allow females to become troopers) I was above the starting age. Just as well, I guess. Even if I were 50 years younger, I would not even consider it today. Quick Foo of The Giggles tells me there were 136 LEOs KIA in ’23, down from 224 KIA in ’22. Didn’t check for WIA, but I’m sure there was a bunch. And now-a-days, the perp has more rights than the LEO…or the victim. Yeah, I’d be dead or in jail too.
The “Exchange” didn’t work out very well for the perp in this case.
What ya wanna bet that if our very own Graybeard was given a Walther (*spits*), even one worth $30K, the FIRST (ht2 CW) thing he would do would be sell it?
Just had to post a vid on the history of them firearms, didn’t ya? DIDN’T YA! That led to more vids. Sent Ol’ Gun Bunny right on down the Rabbit Hole. Well played, Kid Squid (ht2 Poe)
Miss Thang looks like she is well equipped. She has some nice firearms, too.
When I started working for United States trucking armored car division back in 1970, we had colt police positive pencil barrel 4 in. .38’s and S&W Mod 10 4 in. pencil barrels. Later on we went to S&W mod 10 bull barrel .38. If I remember, we were US Trucking untill we merged with Brinks after a number of years. US trucks were painted green and Brinks were painted gray. I had a pic of one of our green trucks back in 1977 during the gas shortage at a gas station but cannot remember if we were in the merger already and waiting for the gray trucks. US truckers carried Thompson .45 sub guns back in the 1920’s as seen in pictures in the dispatch office. Forgot about being in US Trucking for years and always mentioned Brink’s on TAH. Great 37 years
Good thing you weren’t debriefed.
Seriously, there was a Brinks guard in Irving, TX who was robbed at gunpoint, and the thief took his gun belt and pants off of him to ensure the guard couldn’t retaliate.
So did Houston Purp shoot through the door or open the door and then shoot?
