Army-Navy game

| December 11, 2023

Well the annual Army-Marine-Navy game is over for the year (almost half of the Navy team is going Marine out of Canoe U. the Academy, versus 23-50% of midshipmen in general.)

Not going to say anything about who won… it was nice but the overall won-loss record does favor the middies. Besides, they are ALL our kids in a manner of speaking.

I assume y’all are familiar with the over-under part of betting on the total score.

The under for the total won 16 straight times before the over finally cashed last season.

The under should have hit Saturday, but a wild sequence at the end caused a push.

The total at BetMGM for the Army-Navy game was 28 by kickoff.

With five minutes left, Army led 10-3. Given how the game — and most games in the rivalry — was going, getting 18 points in less than five minutes was going to take a miracle.

Under bettors were still stressing during a long review, but the play stood. Army led 17-9 with three seconds left.

Army took over the ball almost on their own end zone.

The best play for Army with three seconds left was to take a safety. When the Black Knights lined up in the shotgun, under bettors knew they were in trouble. Quarterback Bryson Daily took the snap, ran around for three seconds, then ran out of the back of the end zone.

Army 17, Navy 11. That’s 28 points. And one of the weirdest, worst beats you’ll ever see for many under bettors.  Yahoo Sports

“This game, in the grand scheme of things, is about more than football,” Navy coach Brian Newberry said. “It’s about celebrating some of the finest young men in the country on the field, and then celebrating and recognizing all those that have dedicated their life to service, that have served and are serving your country. Shining a light on them, celebrating them and showing gratitude for their sacrifice and their commitment. That’s what it’s all about.”

“I think, at the end of the day, whoever was in the stands was proud of what they saw these young men do.”

“Nearly Half Of Naval Academy Football Players Become Marines”

https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2023/12/08/nearly-half-of-naval-academy-football-players-become-marines/

“Since 2014, 46% of the players have become Marines, according to academy spokesman Scott Strasemeier. That’s compared to only 25% to 30% of Naval Academy midshipmen overall.”

“In November, 10 out of the 25 football players in the Class of 2024 received Marine Corps assignments, according to Strasemeier.”

“West, a 2017 Naval Academy graduate, said the football players, himself included, tend to be drawn to the higher physical and other standards of the Marine Corps, though he noted has great respect for the Navy and the people who join the service.”

“Football’s high-contact nature has something in common with the Marine ethos, West said — in particular the infantry, where several of his teammates ended up.”

“I don’t want to compare football to real-life combat operations, but if you’re a football player who’s trained to think that way and use your skills in that way, it turns out a lot of the Marine Corps’ mission is hands-on, imposing your will on someone directly,” West said.”

As I stated in my comment on the WOT, I’m damn proud of everyone of them boys…a damn good game. Army almost forgot that you have to play until the final whistle blows and got real lucky at the end.

Now…The Wing Wiping Chair Farce Pukes needs to put The Commander’s Trophy on a Fast Mover and get it back to Hudson High where it belongs.

(GO) Army DID (BEAT) Navy…AND Air Force!

Fired after last year’s Army – Navy game.
A few years ago,
he was reported getting a salary in the MILLIONS,
$2,316,000 as the head coach for NAVY.

Who else at USNA pulls down anything near 10% of that?

How good were they when Joe Biden was at the helm at QB for Navy? Oh, wait….he WAS going to go there but these two guys named Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach were there so he decided not to go.

Glad the outcome, but did the Midshippeople realize that they have to score more points to win the game?

Social promotion has consequences…

I was too busy digging holes at the crumble shack on Saturday. And Sunday. And tomorrow… Lord willing.

Army tried their best to give it away but I’m glad they prevailed.

100 plus years of football history and coaches STILL don’t seem to realize that all the “prevent” defense does is prevent you from winning.

One fine year I will get to this game.

The USAA commercials with the Army vs Navy families got tiresome but I do like USAA.

It was something good have in the background while I went about regular Saturday work routine…

Being the curmudgeonly hermit I seem to have become of late, I will state for the record that I don’t care for college football, or pro football, or most pro sports these days because the games take so long to get through…anything that’s supposed to be one hour yet takes 3-4 hours is something at my age that’s usually intruding into my somewhat limited remaining time on the planet…and football seems the ideal TV sport…between 3-10 seconds of action with lots of down time for snacks and bathroom breaks…it’s not the slowest game on the planet but it’s certainly a contender…

Now with all that negativity out of the way it was actually enjoyable to see the competitive spirit in this game. A testament to giving whatever you’ve chosen to do all of your effort is never a bad thing. Nicely done by both teams, and as someone else noted Army seemed determined to lose at the end but finally made a stop with a few inches saving the game…
