from a request by POW Network, who was nice enough to surprise me with an FOIA PDF file email on December 8.
I made a few JPG files from the FOIA PDF.
This 1 page alone is the obvious clincher.
BONUS – WGNS Radio, who put up the audio interview with Spurlock, has removed all mention of Spurlock, along with the “POW” and “Tet” audio bits.

As I reflect upon Veteran’s Day I shudder when I see businesses cheapen the moment – “Gutter Cleaning 50% Off on Veteran’s Day” – so it just makes me… uh, wait a minute… 50% off? I’m down.
Tells you how much mark up there is when they can offer 50% off.
Wayyyy back before the Army, I was a ski technician for a Wyoming ski resort. Our retail markup was 200%.
For years, I’ve told others to do what feels right, what makes you feel better and not be held hostage by what you think is expected. There is no one, right way when it comes to grief. Every year I have started the day that is significant on the calendar for a reason I wish it weren’t, sitting at the cemetery at the time, adjusted for 7,000 miles, when he took his last breath. I talk to him and exist in that quiet, early morning unique peace that I’ve only found amongst the rows of identical headstones in our nation’s hallowed grounds. Usually, the morning sun causes mist to rise and coalesce in the swales between the gently rolling hills. In the near distance, the trees are fittingly shedding the last of their color, and I sigh through my tears. After a while, others come. Family, friends, kids who I scolded bring their own little ones. There are hugs and more tears and soon, there is laughter. Jokes he told or played, some not so innocent, stories that have become legends that mom wasn’t supposed to know but of course I did. If things become too maudlin, there will be wry smiles over how he would react to such sap, punctuated by the appearance of a bottle, or two, of his drink of choice. This is always accompanied by mock groans and genuine grimaces as his taste in alcohol was that of a kid – too sweet, highly potent. We reconvene at a local place for a meal and more rounds of what he preferred but couldn’t afford much, or at least enough to do the job alcohol is meant to do when you’re 21. We linger, reluctant to let go of this shared remembrance, of the comfort found in each other’s company. Then, I go off to be alone for a while. I relate the stories of the little ones born since he’s been gone who know him as their honorary uncle, their parent’s best friend. Doing so feels a bit redundant since his picture is prominently displayed in all their homes and every one, every single child, has said at one time or another that Uncle told them to do the thing for which they were being scolded. I believe it’s true, as do their parents. This has been my routine on that one day on the calendar that is notable for just one horrific reason. The comfort of the familiar sustains me in the days leading up to it, and in the days immediately following. Yet this year was different. The thought of it all just made me sad. Rather than looking forward to the remembrances, the hugs, and the stories, all I felt was a strange anxiety. So, for the first time, I didn’t wake early and head out to the cemetery. I stayed in bed for a little, wondering why I didn’t want to go, fighting the feeling that it was wrong not to go. Every now and then, something happens that sustains my faith. As if watching a scene from a movie, I remembered a conversation from the day before in which I expressed this weird combination of dread and the crushing guilt for that dread over the thought of doing what I had done each year. So, the request to join in a shot by a kind Vietnam Vet gentleman couldn’t be declined, particularly since I was shockingly not feeling the effects, not even the burn, from the first. As that first beer turned into two, girlfriends started to appear. They and others just started talking, without saying so, reminding me I’m not alone, sustaining me with the community my son gifted me. The sight of the mom who stands and speaks, who appears so strong, sitting a stool and silently leaking was upsetting to others, something for which I feel the need to apologize. I didn’t have it in me that day, but I will today.
Today is Veteran’s Day. A day that has always been important in my family but now carries a private meaning I am careful to not advertise. Today is the day he came all the way home, the day he was laid to rest among his brothers and sisters in those quiet, rolling hills. Today, as I have done for the past dozen, I will attend a ceremony, share a meal and raise a glass to all those who signed that dotted line. I will smile, genuinely, at seeing the well-deserved and wholly insufficient thanks of a grateful nation.
I offer my heartfelt, unreserved thanks for the service rendered by so many. You are the reason I can write these words. Without your choice to risk all you have, I would have nothing, not least of which is the ability to stand and speak most days. Because I know you remember, even on this day that is yours. He is standing behind you, smiling, telling me “Mom, these are my brothers and sisters. Take care of them”. That is a promise I willingly, happily make and will fulfill. Just as you all fulfilled yours.

Your post brought real and unbidden tears to my eyes. I share your pride and grief, not only in your son but in all the sons and daughters who, as you so eloquently said, “signed that dotted line.”

The Vice President took all of the Veterans out for lunch, which consisted of following a Costco member into the store and swooping and bogarting all of the samples. Every day is Military Appreciation Day with Psul of The Ballsack.

Whelp, made it through another year without a free meal. Sorry, can’t bring myself to do it.
Am overseas right now, can’t get to Golden Corral anyway.
I took advantage of it, but didn’t go all steak and lobster. Burger and fries was enough.
Of course, if it’s free, someone else paid for it. They will get the price back from me eventually with as much as it costs to eat out and how often I just don’t feel like cooking.
