Book banning, or prohibiting children from mature content?

| October 22, 2023

Many claim that there is a widespread move to ban books from schools. Being “anti-race” and “anti LGBT” are two of the labels being assigned to those who advocate for wanting to ban these books. However, witnesses at a House hearing said that the books in question were sexually explicit. These books were approved for use in the school curriculum and for checking out from the school libraries. However, when parents attempted to read these same books at school board hearings, the school board did not want them to do so.

From the Daily Signal

What’s been labeled an epidemic of “book banning” is actually an epidemic of sexually explicit materials getting into American school libraries, witnesses at a House hearing say.

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce held a subcommittee hearing on Thursday morning discussing the prevalence of explicit content in school libraries.

Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Aaron Bean, R-Fla., explained why the hearing was necessary.

“Some of my Democrat colleagues will inevitably accuse Republicans of engaging in a widespread campaign to ‘ban’ books because of racial animus or prejudice against LGBT students,” Bean said in his opening statement. “However, none of the evidence suggests books are being removed for any reason other than inappropriate, explicit content.”

Bean said that the truth is that the books that have been called into question are so obscene that reading passages from them has led to adults being censored in adult forums.

He cited two explicit books in particular.

“School Board officials in Clay County, Florida, had to cut a father’s microphone for reading ‘Lucky’ for fear that the explicit passages would violate FCC laws and regulations, since the School Board meeting was being televised,” Bean said. “Late-night television refused to air an ad featuring language from ‘Gender Queer.'”

Bean said that this is an issue that reaches the federal level because the Biden administration is trying to deprive states and local districts of the right to determine what’s appropriate or inappropriate for their school library shelves.

“President [Joe] Biden appointed a book-review czar to monitor the actions of local school boards and potentially penalize them for simply reviewing books. I see this as a dangerous step and a violation of federalist principles,” he said.

The Daily Signal provides the rest of the story.

If only there was a precedent, sort of a guideline for those who really need to be told what is considered appropriate for various age groups.

Gosh, if only!

Its not banning…
Hitler, Stalin and Mao, their heroes, banned books.
Its called age strictions.
Also, most of the books they’re pushing deal with non-heterosexual content, so we know what their agenda.

Maybe they can just put Penthouse Forum on the shelves and call it equal?! Do they still make that magazine? I sure loved reading all those letters about peoples experiences…though they sometimes seemed a little made up. 😉

“Banned in Boston”

Old tanker

For quite some time there have been laws banning the sale and or distribution of pornography to minors. I fail to see where the books mentioned do not violate those laws. It is illegal to take a minor into a sex show and topless club, yet “trans people” undressing in the classroom is somehow acceptable. Once the kid is 18 I really do not give a crap what they want to read or watch, but the display of sexual material / acts does not belong in a public school for minors.

Remember “they” banned Jesus and prayer in school because it was going to brainwash your kids…

But a confused pole to hole reading p0rno and encouraging them to cut off their junk is encouraged.

kind of sounds like the Matrix!

Like most people, IDGAF what you want to “identify” as, or who you want to have intimate relations with, but could you just leave kids and kritters out of the mix?…And quit trying to do it all in public? And forcing everyone to accept/condone your deviant behavior?

Get rid of the Federal Department of “Education” (read indoctrination) and let the individual states handle it…as was originally intended.

Remember when you could read Huck Finn in high school and Tipper Gore used to burn explicit rap albums?

Yep.

I haven’t eaten fried eggs for breakfast since I first saw that commercial.

Reflecting on it now, it seems I missed the entire point.

Well, hey, being hungry does have an effect.

Add a side of Poblano grits and I’m there!

I’ll throw in some shrimps too, Pappy, just for you…with cheese!

A little cross-border fusion: There’s a Latin American fusion restaurant nearby that makes a killer dish using braised beef short rib and a couple of scallops served over Poblano grits. The Poblano pepper adds a little bit of slow warmth to the dish and I chase it down with the restaurant’s specialty brew, a pineapple tepache style lager made by the microbrewery down the street. They also make a hellacious carne asada dinner with rice and “drunken” beans on the side that can feed 2 easily.

Can we get a name location? If it doesn’t affect your OPSEC, or lead to PII.

I travel for work, approximately 50%, so there’s a chance I could be close at some point.

Gotta pander to the preverts’ jollies to have ’em get the progressivism across.

Jeez, somebody SHOOT that blond-haired thing before it mates and lays eggs!

Has any book ever truly been “banned”? I’m 100% against banning books, but I’m also 100% in favor of keeping things age appropriate. They are not the same thing and are not mutually exclusive.

But the kiddies HAVE TO know that Billy has two daddies. That way they can be jelly of Billy.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone saw a video on Facebook where some LBGQT advocate affiliated with the children’s television PAW Patrol was reading a book aimed at 8 year olds telling how wonderful abortions are. You have to indoctrinate them young.

That makes a lot of sense. Gay dawgs getting pregnant and not being able to seek safe, effective medical care has long been an issue in Canada. So far as Gay Dawgs go they are very hot. Here they are on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Page coming up with multi-sensory theatrical experiences for people for LBGQT autistic kids.

Pro tip: If they can’t talk they can’t be a squealer.

In the ’70s- ’80s, too.

If it HAS TO be censored from a public meeting, then it has no place in an Elementary School Library, they’re pimping gay pr0n on children!

SFC D

It really should be that simple.

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

Th people that advocate, administer, and place these age -inappropriate books on the elementary & jr high school library shelves need to be arrested for child pr0n and s*x with a minor. That should get their attention as to what the adults in the room are fed up with.

waltusaf

Nobody’s banning any books. If these books aren’t in school libraries and parents want their kids to have them, they can go to Barnes & Noble and buy them.

SFC D

And there it is. The “banned” books always have been and always will be available. Parents decide what is appropriate for their child, not the state.

Fyrfighter

You sound like a crazy radical! parents should ALWAYS concede to the “experts”, as they know much better how to raise children than mere “birthing persons” and their significant others…

Odie

You forgot the snark/sarc tag, but I don’t think it’s entirely necessary.

Libraries are publicly funded, and school libraries are specifically set up to cater to kids. Want a LGBTQ section in the local library? Set it up in a confined area where parents can monitor their kids wandering into it and require unaccompanied minors to be at least age 16; most younger children don’t go to the library alone, and like it or not, by the time a kid’s 16 years of age, they’re making some of their own choices. As parent’s we can be strict and unforgiving, but teens rebel, and in less than two years Little Johnny will legally be an adult (who can’t drink, smoke, or rent a car).

If libraries are going to allow explicit books and such, those should be treated like the old back rooms of video rental stores. 18+ to enter and make it equal. If Sally wants to be Sam and can borrow a graphic novel on transitioning, let me borrow Penthouse Comix (I know they’re defunct, but I still have most of the copies from my late teenaged years).

School libraries are an entirely different matter. Parents should have a say in what books their children are exposed to, and school boards should have to abide by the general consensus. Down here there are plenty of Rainbows, but the schools are mostly Conservative in values and certain agendas aren’t pushed too heavily. “Educators” should focus on core curriculums and whichever electives they teach. They shouldn’t feel entitled to groom our children to become the next generation of gender-confused multi-colored hair weirdos with a bone to pick.
