A San Diego County supervisor and Marine combat veteran has drawn criticism from some veterans for announcing he had post-traumatic stress just days before accusations emerged that he sexually assaulted and harassed a government employee.
Nathan Fletcher’s progressive positions and telegenic presence made him a solid favorite to succeed another prominent California politician, Toni Atkins, in the state Senate. But he announced March 26 that he was dropping his bid after less than two months to seek treatment for alcohol abuse and “devastating post traumatic stress associated with combat piled on top of intense childhood trauma.”
Days later, Fletcher resigned as chair of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System after a government staffer alleged sexual harassment and assault in a lawsuit that included screenshots of lurid messages from Fletcher.
Hours after that, Fletcher said he would resign from the county board of supervisors, calling the pressure on his family over the last week “immense and unbearable.”
“Resign” is a word. So is “confidence.”

I hate it when a PTSD comes on right as soon as somebody gets into trouble. It almost makes it seem like they’re using the PTSD as an excuse for unethical behavior. I mean almost. It would be completely unethical to blame unethical behavior on a fake illness.

Yeah blame everything and everyone but yourself.
Childhood trauma is indeed horrific if he suffered abuse of any nature as a kid, I’m not attempting to minimize that reality, nor would I minimize the claims of PTSD made by anyone.
There is however another reality, that the vast majority (and I do mean vast) of those affected by both childhood trauma and PTSD are able to still hold themselves accountable for their actions. What happened to you, however horrible, once it’s behind you doesn’t define who you continue to be unless you choose to let it define you.
PTSD or abuse trauma of any kind isn’t a free pass to be an asshole. That’s a choice you make as an individual, we all know we don’t have to be assholes, but for some people it’s easier to be the asshole and then blame a past trauma of some nature as a means of evading responsibility.
If he has avoided seeking treatment all this time for these traumas that’s a choice he’s made to remain untreated for something he knows is problematic for him…that’s still a choice he made.
He fucked up and he’s looking for an easy way out, which makes him no better than your everyday, average, piece of shit scumbag fraudster and criminal…fuck that guy.

Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself or feel an episode of the dread PTSD coming on I think of the folks I met in Quang Tri province. The children, in particular. I rather doubt they will ever be accused of sexual assault due to PTSD. I doubt they even know what it is.
Most of the world has, and has had throughout history, more “traumatic stress associated with combat piled on top of intense childhood trauma.” than any of us, even Mr. Fletcher, can probably imagine.
A little less whining and a little more gratitude is in order, I think.
