Survey Finds Americans Use A Gun For Self-Defense 1.67 Million Times Annually
Responders reported that most incidents are resolved without any shots being fired.
by GUY J. SAGI
A recent survey conducted by William English, from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, found “….that guns are used defensively by firearms owners in approximately 1.67 million incidents per year.” The number is the product of an exhaustive effort in early 2021, when roughly 54 thousand U.S. residents over the age of 18 were polled. In all,16,708 of the people who participated owned a firearm and, “…approximately a third of gun owners (31.1 percent) have used a firearm to defend themselves or their property, often on more than one occasion…” the study’s abstract explains.“[I]n most defensive incidents (81.9 percent) no shot was fired,” English wrote, confirming the inaccuracy of studies that rely exclusively on shots-fired or injury reports provided by law enforcement or other government sources. “Handguns are the most common firearm employed for self-defense (used in 65.9 percent of defensive incidents)…,” he wrote. “Approximately a quarter (25.2 percent) of defensive incidents occurred within the gun owner’s home, and approximately half (53.9 percent) occurred outside their home, but on their property. About one out of ten (9.1 percent) defensive gun uses occurred in public, and about one out of thirty (3.2 percent) occurred at work.”
Nearly 82 million Americans own at least one gun, according to English’s findings, and they don’t fit the historical stereotype.

California Mustang thief runs of out gas during police chase, killed by oncoming traffic: report
The suspect apparently ran out of gas while being chased by California police and was killed by oncoming traffic when exiting the Ford Mustang
By Louis Casiano | Fox News
The driver of a stolen car died early Wednesday on a Northern California bridge after apparently running out of gas and being struck by oncoming traffic.
Eric Jaeger, 31, of Fremont, allegedly took a Ford Mustang and was being chased by San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies around 4:15 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said, Fox San Francisco reported.
The owners of the vehicle called the police to report a home invasion in Half Moon Bay.
During the chase, authorities kept losing sight of Jaeger until they spotted the muscle car on the eastbound lanes of a bridge.

Not exactly self-removal so no Darwin Award for Mr. Jaeger. I think he deserves honorable mention, though.
Popcorn Store Owner Shoots 16-Year-Old in Leg After She Pulled a Gun on Him
by Luke McCoy
A store owner wasn’t the first to draw his gun, but he was the first to get shots off, shooting a teenager in self-defense. And all because she was trying to steal popcorn. This past Saturday, this self-defense shooting occurred at Northpark Mall in Ridgeland, MS. A 16-year-old girl was attempting to steal popcorn from a store in the mall. The teenager pulled a gun on the owner of the store when confronted. But the owner of the store was also armed.
While drawing from the drop isn’t recommended, the store owner drew his own firearm while having a gun pointed at him and was the first to get shots off. It is unclear if the suspect fired back at the store owner. You can hear about 12 or 13 shots in a video taken by a man who was in a nearby shoe store buying his son a pair of sneakers.

I wasn’t there, but this seems like a very stupid move to me on the storeowner’s part. Glad it paid off for him. Thanks again for the links, Gun Bunny.

Was Eric the Hunter heading for Nevada ‘s Mustang Ranch to get some satisfaction for both him and the car? I guess the car wasn’t satisfied with the sights at Half Moon Bay.
I just want to know (after Jaeger was hit by traffic and killed) is the car ok?
Not sure how they define “defensive uses”.
Last night I had a prowler in my backyard who activated my various motion sensors. I suspect he was trying to steal an ATV that I had parked there for a few days but had moved to a storage building yesterday. You could see the ATV clearly from a well traveled road behind my house.
I grabbed my PDW (A large pistol with a brace) and opened a window. My neighbor, also noting someone in the back yard, had released his dog. The Newfie running him down was enough to make him tear ass across the lawn and never look back.
Seemed like more a defensive use of a dog to protect property. Something we humans have been doing for a lot longer than we have had guns. But still the gun was there.
Usually a defensive gun use is any time a gun is used to stop a crime in progress, or to stop a crime from happening. As it is stated in that study, and has been determined in a number of studies dating back to the 1990s, in most cases the simple appearance of the gun is enough to stop the crime. This counts as a “defensive gun use”.
Look up Gary Kleck and John Lott online.
The survey is proof that the news feeds supress FGS. By their #s we should be able to have 4.5K a day. It’s a struggle to get 2 or 3. A Fur Missile is my FIRST (ht 2 CW) Line of Defence.
Bad to be unhorsed into an oncoming stampede. Dumbass!
Not to be corny, but the store owner was lucky he was able to pop a round off before the perp. Wonder if he had to butter up the DA to avoid charges. Put this one in the bag.
Speaking of proof; Tube Artillery gun pr0n one day and hand held Artillery from HMS, JMB (HBHN) the next. Feel the Love that AW1Ed has for us. It may last until the next posting of the DA Form 6.
Yeah, 16 year-old, Ms. Gimmemyfreeshit learned the hard way that merely having a gun and waving it around isn’t going to work when faced with determined opposition. Kind of reminds me of:
Was the 16 year old at room temperature after the 12 rounds were fired from the store owner or does he need more range time.
Says she was hit once in the leg, I believe. Admire the store owner’s speed, deplore his choices, and really think he needs more range time.
Basic equation: unless an EV, there is generally an inverse relationship between gas mileage and horsepower.
The safest place to stand during a gang shooting is right in front of the shooter.
There was a gang shooting in my hometown where the guy let off the entire mag in a semi-auto 9mm, and didn’t hit a single person. He wounded the van that belonged to a friend of mine, and it wound up in police custody for a couple of days for evidence processing. But he was using the standard “hold the gun sideways so you look badass” style of firearm grip, combined with the “hold it above yo haid while sittin’ in yo ride”.
At lease the Mustang owners get the car back with negligible damage other than possible spatters on the paint. 😜
