Banks County deputy wounded in shootout OK; kidnap suspect, his victim remain hospitalized

A Banks County sheriff’s deputy wounded Tuesday in an exchange of gunfire with a kidnapping suspect is doing well and currently working on administrative duty, Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed said Wednesday.

The shootout occurred about 2 a.m. in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel at Banks Crossing in Commerce, where the deputy found a man and woman asleep in a car, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The deputy checked the license plate number and discovered the car’s owner, Robert M. Brodie Jr., 32, was wanted in Henderson, N.C., after a woman was kidnapped.

Vance County (N.C.) Sheriff Curtis Brame told WRAL TV 5 that Brodie broke into a Henderson home on Monday night and kidnapped the woman.

The GBI said that as deputies tried to awaken the two in the car, Brodie pulled out a gun and shot the woman, then he and two deputies exchanged fire.

Cheboygan deputies attacked by man wielding hatchet, assailant shot dead in incident

Deputies with the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department were attacked by a man wielding a hatchet on Thursday, and the incident resulted in the assailant’s death.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, deputies were dispatched at 11:52 a.m. on Thursday at the request of a family member to a residence in Ellis Township for a welfare check on a female individual. The family member had received a text message from her that she was in trouble with a person known to her and needed immediate help.

Immediately upon entry into the residence, deputies were attacked by a male assailant with a hatchet, striking one of the deputies. According to the press release, the deputies responded in accordance with departmental policy and training and shot the assailant. The assailant was later declared deceased.

Man fatally shot after allegedly pulling weapon on police while evading arrest identified

A man who was fatally shot late Tuesday night after allegedly pulling a weapon on a Corpus Christi police officer while trying to evade arrest has been identified.

Steve Neff, 50, was determined to have died from a gunshot wound, the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office told the Caller-Times Thursday.

The officer who shot Neff, not yet identified by the Corpus Christi Police Department, will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with the department’s practice and policy, a news release stated.

According to the news release, the shooting occurred after an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was traveling near Gollihar Road and Randall Drive.
