Former NASCAR driver shot dead had hatchet during dispute with estranged wife, other man, police say
No charges immediately filed in shooting of John Wes Townley

By Stephen Sorace
Former NASCAR driver John Wes Townley was wielding a hatchet during a dispute at a Georgia home occupied by his estranged wife and another man when he was fatally shot over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

The altercation began shortly after the 31-year-old Townley arrived at the residence in Athens, Ga., around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said.

Townley brandished the hatchet at some point during the fight before 32-year-old Zachary Anderson, of Dunwoody, Ga., fired several shots from his firearm. The bullets struck both Townley and Townley’s estranged wife, 30-year-old Laura Townley.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 32-year-old man is dead and another 36-year-old man injured after a shooting in German Village late Wednesday night.

Columbus police responded to the 600 block of Lazelle Street shortly after 11:30 p.m., where they found two men who had been shot. Both men were taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. According to police, the 32-year-old man, Marcus George, was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.

“Former NASCAR driver John Wes Townley”

His last dying words were “let’s go Brandon”

Is gas getting so expensive so now it’s a random walk by shooting?

Willing to bet that it was an illegal transaction (drug deal?) gone bad.

Wasn’t there – didn’t do it. Although Mr. Zachary seems to have saved the day, also seems as though his iron-sight accuracy may need a bit of work. *shrug* A decent outcome, BZ nevertheless. And as one is above ground and the other is soon to be buried, obviously Mr. Thirty-six year old concealed-carry, used his range-time…wisely.

AW1Ed,

The Winston Churchill quote is a really good one, and one that I had not heard before. After digging a little, it has been used a great deal throughout history.

In 1952, an op-ed in a newspaper added something that is perfect as well and made me laugh (or shake my head. Maybe both.)

“A fanatic,” says Winston Churchill, “is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject.” We thought that was a politician.—Rock Hill (S.C.) Herald.

I also found this quote the other day made by Ohio Representative and Senator John Sherman which may be germane today:

“The Constitution provides for every contingency in the Executive, except a vacancy in the mind of the President.”

– John Sherman

No matter what, great quote from Churchill. Well done and appreciated.

According to Wikipedia, John Wes Townley’s father Tony was the co-founder of of the Zaxby’s chain of chicken restaurants.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wes_Townley

In 2019, he had been convicted of disorderly conduct after being charged with three misdemeanor counts, including family violence battery, after he reportedly threw his wife to the floor, causing her to have reasonable fear for her life.

Townley and the woman divorced after that and that was the woman he went after when he was fatally shot.

To add two of my fav’s –

– “Nancy Astor: “Winston, you are a drunk!”
Winston Churchill: “And you, madam, are ugly. But I shall be sober in the morning.”
(Reported exchange will Winston Churchill.”
― Nancy Astor the Viscountess Astor

– “Nancy Astor: “Sir, if you were my husband, I’d poison your tea.”
Winston Churchill: “Madame,i f you were my wife, I’d drink it!”
(Exchange with Winston Churchill)”
― Nancy Astor the Viscountess Astor

Winston also said that “Robert E. Lee was the noblest American who ever lived and one of the greatest commanders known to the annals of war.” Smart man, that saved England and then was thrown on the heap after the war.
