USS Gerald R Ford (CVN-78) undergoing the first of three shock trials
The Navy has blasted the USS Ford with 40,000 pounds of explosive to see how she holds up. This is the first of three such tests, with successive tests occurring closer to the ship. Supposedly the boom seen here registered a 3.6 on the Richter Scale by the USGS, but I can’t find much to back that claim up.
From Defense News;
The U.S. Navy conducted the first of three in-water blasts near first-in-class aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, kicking off the full-ship shock trials process on a nuclear-powered flattop for the first time in 34 years.
The Navy’s shock trial event, the first of its kind on any class of ship since 2016, aims to prove the new carrier can withstand a hit in combat. The ship will go through two more scheduled blasts in June and July, Lt. Cmdr. Desiree Frame. a Ford spokeswoman, told Defense News.
“In a shock trial, a ship undergoes three 40,000-pound explosive charge detonations which occur successively closer to the ship,” she said. Exact dates for each event are dependent on sea state, weather, marine mammal activity and other factors.
If there wasn’t someone on that ship that said, “It must have been that bean I ate for dinner,” after the blast, that’s a missed opportunity of epic proportions.

With all due respect, you missed the most important questions here. Did the (Go Army, Beat…) Navy ask the boat’s pronouns and for consent before performing the test?
I foresee a baaaad Command Climate Survey inbound.

They want $1.29 by midnight or all my TAH files
will be destroyed. I’m thinking about it…
Outtakes of the firing crew in action.
That looks like the training film the Iranians used before their “epic” live fire drill, although Moe, Larry and Curley were only pretending to be incompetents…
RetiredDevilDoc8404,
The final scene after these shots is classic.
Their SGT points the gun at The Three Stooges,
they think they are having their photo taken,
you hear the boom,
and all you see is 3 sets of smoking boots.
Yes, The Three Stooges DIE at the end,
and they die funny.
Stoogevision is still some of the funniest shit ever made!
Agree.
I grew up on it. Laurel and Hardy also.
“to see how she holds up”
I’m afraid we will know soon enough….
Any money on the plane elevators working? Nah, didn’t think so.
Good thing they did this test on USS Ford and NOT USS Chevy…or USS Dodge. THOSE tubs woulda been resting at the bottom of the sea…in pieces! 😛
THAT IS if the USS Chevy could even make it out of port on her own power!
Buahahahaha! Now THAT’S funny!
Check this out, on this day 1865 Brigadier-General Stand Watie was the last CSA General-in-the-field to surrender in the War of Shame and Northern Aggression
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stand_Watie#American_Civil_War
God Bless ya Chief.
That was to KoB’s comment
Chief Stand Watie mighta had to surrender, but Lone Watie didn’t surrender. They did make Lone’s horse surrender, tho. He’s still pulling a wagon up in Kansas.
One of the books I poured over during the Centennial of the Late Unpleasantness was called “Rifles for Watie”. Coupla Federals infiltrated his ranks trying to catch another Federal that was selling them weapons from pilfered US Stock. It didn’t end real well for them, overall. Longtime Compatriot of mine, his wife is a direct descendant of one of Gnrl Watie’s Choctaw Rifles Troopers. Her Aunt had the original Choctaw Nations Battle Flag they carried.
“When I get to likin’ someone, they ain’t around too long.”
“I noticed when you get to DISlikin’ someone, they ain’t around too long, either!”
And my personal favorite:
“Dyin’ ain’t much of a livin’, boy.”
“…aims to prove the new carrier can withstand a hit in combat.”
So, what happens if the answer is “No, it can’t”.
Do we se a headline: “Navy scraps newest carrier”?
Does it sink? Does some unlucky Pentagon staffie get to visit SecDef and say “Ummm.. Sir? About those tests on the Ford… We’ve had sort of an oopsie.”
That Simpsons clip reminds me of when my father brewed his own beer. We did indeed have bottles blowing up in the middle of the night.
Yeah, but has the navy figured out the Ford elevators?
How about that electromagnetic catapult?
