Prepping For Guadalcanal

| June 2, 2021

Thanks to the diligence of the US Navy’s Photographers Mates, the photos you see in this video about the preparations for invading Guadalcanal give you a fairly good idea of that part of the planning for invading Guadalcanal.

This is the first part of the battle setting for Guadalcanal – the prepping, if you will. All the preparations were done to provide support for troops coming up, prior to the actual battle for control of Guadalcanal. Drachinifel’s narration is direct and to the point.

The Japanese had attempted to provide supplies to their own troops by putting supplies into oil drums and sending them floating to the shore of the island. It was not very successful. US Navy ships came fully loaded to supply our troops. During the Navy’s approach, Japanese aircraft attacked the flotilla, including torpedoes and kamikaze divebombing directly into the ships where possible.

The whole series on Guadalcanal is good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jET2M8yP4Jo&list=PLMK9a-vDE5zGRthqKrcdizbIrKc-9MQFk.

For example, it puts things in perspective when in the first video Drach talks about how tired the ships crews were after hour and hours at battle stations and then the Japanese show up.

Poetrooper

Thanks for that, Ex. Retired navy captain, P.T. Deutermann, has written several novels about the naval war in the Pacific and this battle is the setting for one of them although I can’t remember which.

While his books are historical fiction, he really makes the battles come alive.

KoB

You know Poe, if some of these type books, or videos, or maybe even the teaching of history was required in the public school system, maybe we wouldn’t have so many punk azz mofos vandalizing War Memorials.

Tanks Ex.

Poetrooper

You are so right, KoB. If we made them study nothing other than the founding of the nation and the founding documents plus the wars fought to preserve them, it would change a whole lot of these ignorant kids’ attitudes about their country and its people.

Hatchet

Watched a 2020 documentary a few months ago called ‘Apocalypse ’45’ and some it’s recently discovered ‘unseen footage’ was positively incredible as almost all of the footage was in colour and most of it was filmed by John Ford. The lead-up scenes showing the landing preparations for Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal was fascinating. Definitely a worthy watch…
