Gavin Macleod in character as Captain Stubing

KoB sends in the sad news that actor Gavin Macleod, best known for his role as Captain Stubing on TV’s The Love Boat, has passed away at age 90. He also had roles in the military films The Thousand Plane Raid and Kelly’s Heroes. He also had successful roles on the classic TV shows McHale’s Navy and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Like many men of his generation, Macleod served his country. He was in the US Air Force from 1952 to 1954.

According to his stepdaughter, Macleod died from his age and a period of recent ill health. She said, “He had one of the most amazing, fun blasts of a life of anybody I know. He enjoyed every minute of it. I don’t even think in his wildest dreams he dreamt of the life that he ended up having and creating.”

She called him the “best, sweetest, purest guy.”

Fair winds and following seas Airman Macleod.

Godspeed and Farewell, Good Sir! Loved your work…and your Faith.

Cross that Beautiful Bridge, it’ll be there…and there are no negative waves on the other side.

The Stranger

The bridge is there, alright. Courtesy of your friendly, neighborhood Engineer. Rest in piece, Airman, rest in piece.

Green Thumb

Rest well, Sir.

I will gladly book passage on your boat on the way to the Fiddler’s Green.

Prior Service

Good man. RIP.

217 screen credits, to include appearances on The Munsters, Gomer Pyle USMC, Hawaii Five-O, Hogan’s Heroes, and one of last guest appearances was as Uncle Stu on King Of Queens. He had some great lines on those two episodes.

Not to be confused with Captain Stabbin’ some post-9/11 vets may be more familiar with.
