Houston Tumlin

Skippy sends us the sad news of the passing of SGT Houston Tumlin. While known for his childhood movie role, he chose to serve his country in the Army’s 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell. Apparently his inner demons got the best of him, and he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Talladega Nights actor Houston Tumlin struggled with mental health prior to his death by suicide and following his service in the United States Army.

According to the late actor’s mother, Michelle Tumlin, her son battled depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, which she blames for his suicide on March 23 at age 28, TMZ reports.

Despite his internal struggles, Tumlin received multiple commendations during his service, including the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

However, it was earning his Air Assault wings that made Tumlin proudest, his mother says.

Tumlin will reportedly be honored for his life and his service with a full military funeral.

His family have already been doing their part to honor his memory and spread his story by walking in a suicide prevention march just days after his death in Helena, Alabama.

The event was held to raise awareness of veteran suicide and how to get support for PTSD.

“Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, as all problems in life are temporary, no matter how bad you think your problem is.”

Just getting ready for the suicide stand down.

Do not believe this dude was in the Box.

No being accusatory, but did not see it. Could be wrong, though.

Saw a statistic a few years back that pointed out that most of the suicides in the military over the past several years were from folks who had never deployed.

Taking nothing way, here. Just curious.

Anyone got anything on that?

I’ve been looking and the closest thing I can find was a comment from someone who apparently worked with him…”Was truly an honor to work with you doing missions as your soldier along with other great NCOs in South Korea Camp Humphreys.”

Doesn’t sound like “In Theater” and only 6 years in, assume one of those was Basic and AIT and then first assignment. He did earn his Air Assault Wings though so who knows.
I’m willing to believe (My opinion) that he had inner conflict before he was in the military and that at the very least, didn’t help.
28 is too damn young to be bailing on life.
I’m not saying anything and we may never know but there’s got to be more to this story, like (already said “depression”) underlying and not really identified mental health issues.
I’m just not buying 6 years in and OMGPTSDBBQ!!!.
Something just doesn’t add up but what the hell do I know??!?!
Sad, for certain, a young man feeling like he’s completely lost enough to die over.
smdh…

Green Thumb

Agreed.

Sad.

May God’s Comfort bring His Peace to the Family and Loved Ones of this Veteran. I did not know this young man, but if he did Line Construction for “Telegraph Lines” he was a Brother. We could have crossed paths on storm damage work.

Never saw this Motion Picture, never thought too much of Will Ferrell. To me, his idiocy ranks right up there with Jim Carrey.

Ditto. I’m a Comm-tech and in spite of geographical location, could’ve found myself rubbing elbows with this gentleman. RIP SGT Houston Tumlin. May you find eternal peace in the next world that you did not find here.

Smitty

KoB-agree with you about Ferrell and Carrey. I also put Chevy Chase in the same category- a man who made his reputation mocking Gerald Ford- a man my Secret Service friends described as the nicest president they served.

KoB

Spot on Smitty, I’m wid ya. I voted for Jimmuh in the primaries just to vote against the lying of the senate. Prolly one of the handful in GA that voted for Ford. People looked at me weird when I made mention of that. I figured going in Jimmuh would not get any support from even his own party because he was not the chosen one.

Lotta respect for Gerald Ford, and what he did/tried to do for the Country. Chevy Chase? None.at.all. Never seen any of his motion pictures either.

Ex Coelis

Completely agree with you both – pretty much from the git-go – when Chevy Chase started out on Saturday Night Live, I didn’t care for him one iota. And when Chase began his tiny minded SNL diatribes with ‘I’m Chevy Chase and you’re not’ and then sought fit to further underscore his deficit of humour by making Gerald Ford a laughing stock of the show, at that point – I lost any and all respect for him. Didn’t help matters much when I found out that SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels thought Chase was funnier and less trouble to work with than John Belushi but I always felt that SNL’s resident Samurai Sushi Chef was a much more versatile and thusly, a much more superior comedian. *shrug* Doom on Lorne Michaels. And as far as the so-called ‘talents’ of Carrey and Ferrell are concerned, I’ve always thought they made great book-ends to Chase’s less-than mediocre brand of humour… While I never knew anyone that worked with or actually knew President Ford, I always held Gerald Ford in almost the same esteem as JFK. My two cents worth. Cheers to all here..
