San Francisco schools to rename schools named after American historical figures

A San Francisco High School

KoB sends in the latest from the left coast. San Francisco School Board officials have voted to rename dozens of schools in the district named for historical American figures. They did not vote on whether to reopen schools which have been closed for months due to COVID. This despite the CDC’s guidance, which for months has been that distance learning is detrimental to student physical and mental health as well as retarding their learning.

Let’s stick to the important stuff though, there are schools named after such controversial figures as Roosevelt (doesn’t matter which one), Lincoln, and champion of the California leftists and longtime employer of a Chinese spy, currently sitting US Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).

From Fox News;

Not even revered former presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson are safe from “cancel culture,” it appears.

The American icons were among a list of historical figures whose names will be removed from San Francisco’s public schools following a 6-1 vote by the school board Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

Washington and Jefferson were both slave owners and Lincoln, who ended slavery, became controversial because critics claim he oppressed indigenous people.

The presidents were among a long list of men and women whose namesake schools will soon be renamed. Others on the list include Francis Scott Key, who wrote the words to the national anthem, former presidents William McKinley, James Garfield, James Monroe, and Herbert Hoover, Revolutionary War hero Paul Revere and author Robert Louis Stevenson, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Even an elementary school named for current U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., will be changed over allegations that she replaced a damaged Confederate flag outside of City Hall when she was the city’s mayor in 1986, according to Courthouse News. She didn’t replace the flag after it was pulled down a second time.

Historical figures have come under a sharp focus since anti-racism protests swept the country last summer, with some protesters ripping down Confederate statues but alos those of figures like Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and others they deemed offensive.

Mayor London Breed rebuked the plan in October as “offensive,” saying the school board should be focused on reopening schools closed during the pandemic rather than renaming them.

“It’s offensive to parents who are juggling their children’s daily at-home learning schedules with doing their own jobs and maintaining their sanity,” she said at the time, according to Courthouse News. “It’s offensive to me as someone who went to our public schools, who loves our public schools, and who knows how those years in the classroom are what lifted me out of poverty and into college. It’s offensive to our kids who are staring at screens day after day instead of learning and growing with their classmates and friends.”

Replacing signage at the 44 schools will cost more than $400,000, according to the Courthouse News. The price tag could also go up to around $1 million for schools to get new activity uniforms, repaint gymnasium floors, etc., according to the Chronicle. The district is facing a budget deficit.

While the board focused on renaming the schools in the Tuesday meeting, it did not discuss reopening schools from coronavirus shutdowns.

Other critics complained the panel that reviewed the appropriateness of school names used little input from historians and didn’t put the figures into a historical context or weigh their contributions with their failings.

Others argued the research process was thin, relying on selective sources and using websites like Wikipedia to back up claims.

In the case of Roosevelt Middle School, it wasn’t clear if the board knew which former President Roosevelt it was named for, but decided to have it removed anyway.

Board member Mark Sanchez, however, called the decision a “moral message.”

“It’s a message to our families, our students and our community. It’s not just symbolic,” he said, according to the Chronicle.

Board member Kevine Boggess, who supported the resolution, suggested schools shouldn’t be named after anyone.

We “should not make heroes out of mortal folks,” he said, according to the Chronicle. “I think we need to examine our naming policies across the district and really consider how the way we go about naming schools reflects our true values.”

School staff and families have until April to suggest new names for the schools.

More erasing and rewriting history.

Let’s waste money on stupidity, but avoid voting on letting anybody in these buildings. More idiocy brought to you by the bad idea folks in Bella Piglosi’s district… Just make the new signs with velcro letters so they can be changed every time a person falls out of favor with the regime.

Schools in NYC didn’t have names. They were PS #Whatever, numbered by the school district. Don’t know if that’s changed.

My grade school and high school were named for the towns we lived in, which tells you how small those districts were, but they were good schools.

Maybe these self-righteous quacks should focus on getting REAL WORLD LEARNING for their students instead of renaming things because you’re a personal embarrassment yourself to the human race.

When you make a “thing” out of nothing, you’re as dimwitted and disconnected from reality as is possible.

    • Ex;

nyc public schools were numbered like PS 156,JHS 59 (junior hs), Andrew Jackson HS and you had trade High Schools like Aviation HS, Westinghouse, brooklyn Tech in brooklyn etc. I went to PS 156, JHS 59 and AJHS class of 63. The Junior Highs took the place of Public schools grades 7-9 then straight to HS.I heard that there are what are called intermediate schools but don’t know about them.

NYC schools have been given names over time alongside their numbers since they started the practice in 1916

“In 1916, when the city decided to give all its schools names alongside their numbers, The New York Times was not pleased.”

      https://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/08/education/08numbers.html#:~:text=In%201916%2C%20when%20the%20city,York%20Times%20was%20not%20pleased.

It’s actually a rarity now to find a NYC public school without a name. (55 schools listed below have no name, less than that have no PS number in favor of a name only)

But it’s a good thing that San Fran has solved that whole streets and sidewalks being used as toilets thing along with the inconvenience of illegal aliens murdering its innocent citizens, and can focus on the real issues plaguing our times.

My high school was Bishop Lynch and my son currently goes to was our cross town rival, Nolan Catholic (another bishop).

Worst of all, my grade school was named after St. Bernard (he could be said to have initiated the Crusades!! Gasp!!)

      Take THAT libs!!

Glad to see they are tackling the real issues plaguing our nations public schools. I’m sure this is just what we need to fix low graduation rates and poor test scores.

  5. 26Limabeans says:

    How about Jefferson Airplane High..?
Paul Revere and the Raiders Middle School..

    • KoB says:

Good point ‘beans. Or using the number theory, Name ’em Savoy Brown 1 thru whatever, since it seems as if the school system is nothing but a Hell Bound Train. But, again, I digress.

Y’all may recall I made mention awhile back that this whole destruction of History was NOT going to be about “All Things Confederate”? Welp, here we are. What’s next, changing the lyrics to songs that have offensive language?

Since the Fox linky didn’t name them all (that I could find) I dug thru the ALGlorebull amazing inherwebz and found the complete list. Grab you a spare WTF (((OVER))) before you read it.

Even the FCC admitted they had no idea
        what they were saying.

        • rgr1480 says:

Ha! I must have listened to my 45 about 100 times in order to write down what I thought the lyrics were. I was sure they were dirty …. but couldn’t figure out what “curl a rose down in her hair” meant!

Actually, the lyrics are quite nice:

          Louie Louie, oh no
          Me gotta go
          Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
          Louie Louie, oh baby
          Me gotta go
Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home
          Louie Louie, oh no
          Me gotta go
          Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
          Louie Louie, oh baby
          Me gotta go
Three nights and days I sail the sea
          Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she’s there
I smell the rose in her hair.
          Louie Louie, oh no
          Me gotta go
          Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
          Louie Louie, oh baby
          Me gotta go
Okay, let’s give it to ’em, right now!

I’m sure F!ck was in there somewhere. (^__^)

    Too soon?

    • rgr769 says:

The school’s sex ed course could be entitled “How to bang bang Fang Fang with your wang wang.” Oh wait, that would be too cis-gendered and non-inclusive. But if they add “Fisting for Freshman” to the curriculum, that could counter-balance that binary sexism. But you are prolly asking what about the two-spirit students and the post-surgical trannies? I will leave that to the wisdom of the San Fran Board of Ed.

      • rgr769 says:

Corn Pop once cut him long and deep with that “rusty straight razor” in a gang fight over drug turf in Delaware. Franklin tried to defend himself with one of those floaty plastic chains from the pool’ s deep end, but to no avail.

I doubt those successful historical people would want their names associated with the shitshow of these “public schools” that fail any objective measure of education.

These warehouses of industrial-grade ignorance are intended to produce conformist serfs, not Free people.

  19. Commie-Tsar says:

It’s a moral imperative that these schools and others throughout this nations have their names changed from those worshiping those old, desiccated white devils to people that have been at the forefront of the Great Struggle to against you capitalist heathen!

    • Green Thumb says:

And folks wonder why charter schools get those vouchers?

Curious if an “for the people yet extremely well off” SF types out in Northern California send their kids to charter schools?

We support the minority folks but yet we do not want out kids to go to school with them.

  20. MSG Eric says:

San Francisco is trying to overcompensate for being racist and white supremacists.

Using the Democratic Party’s logic, they voted for the rich old white person by 75% over the person of color. So, Nancy Pelosi gets to maintain her throne as Queen of Congress for at least two more years because they hate non-whites. They’re doing the school name changes as a smokescreen.
