Video of LA jetpack man emerges

| December 26, 2020

Some shaky-cam video worthy of Sasquatch or Nessie has emerged of the oft-reported and as yet unknown jetpack wearing fella flying around the LA area.

We first reported on this phenomena back in September when airline pilots coming into LAX were reporting a “‘a guy in a jetpack’ flying about 300 yards off their wing while on final approach to the bustling airport. What makes the reports even stranger is that, like a scene out of The Rocketeer, the airliners were descending through 3,000 feet when jetpack guy showed up next to them.”

We missed reporting on an update a few weeks later in which another airliner reported the same thing in October.

“A China Airlines crew reported seeing what appeared to be someone in a jet pack at an approximate altitude of 6,000 feet, about seven miles northwest of Los Angeles International Airport,” the FAA said in a statement to CNBC.

The most advanced jetpacks developed so far limit flight to a matter of minutes. While capable of getting the rider up to a couple thousand feet, with only 10 minutes of gas on board, you’d have to be pretty crazy to reach that limit.

This most recent sighting was out at sea, at about 3,000 feet, and reported/recorded by pilots off the coast of LA in a flight training area.

The article links to a YouTube video (below) that posits one possible explanation, a hoax using a quad copter drone.

While this certainly fits the look and feel of the new video of the LA jet pack guy, this still doesn’t fully explain it. Where he was most recently observed isn’t near enough anywhere that someone could control the thing from.

Even stranger, nobody in the Los Angeles metroplex of more than 13 million people have reported seeing this thing take off or land.

Funny how there is no radar data….Or is there?

What is the RADAR cross section of a person and a jet pack? Got to be bigger than a drone.

With regards to the control – for many years now there have been 60km/35mi + long range RC set ups readily available to build or purchase. You are expected to follow the established hobbiest/FAA rules and required licenses, and depending on the violation can have severe reprecussions (fines and jail). The few that I’m aware of that run these set ups have expensive rigs and they switched over for multiple reasons incluiding: frequency incompatabilioty with video transmissions from the rig, reception of control input to the rig (lag/blackouts/brownouts), and operating range. As noted before, they require the proper FCC license for those frequencies and transmission power levels, and if used commercially (or based on rig weight) also require FAA certification(s).

Probably not the classic jetpack (à la the military-developed one James Bond used in Thunderball) but a wingsuit with a jet. See these dudes:

Old tanker

Being that airliners are descending to landing and carrying about 200 knots I seriously doubt the traditional back pack could maintain formation. It would have to be a wing suit as mentioned. Same for the neat drone as in the video. In addition the drone would be flying way far out for radio control (hobbyist type) to maintain control and line of sight. Descent to landing is a multimile operation for airliners.

The rocket wingsuits are 50% faster than the jet packs. They also end flight at altitude by opening a chute. This makes it quite feasible. Why would anybody report jt? It’s LA, there is no way it could be the strangest thing they saw all day.

Probably why nobody’s said anything from NYC, too.
