Prime rib roast goes in the smoker in the morning.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TAH!

Rats of the Cong to you, Friend!

We need a friendly FIRST for Christmas (not that 5th/77th is not friendly, but…)

Thanks Graybeard…

First?

Whaddayaknow… take that, KoB.

In fairness, I believe he did say a couple of days ago that he’d be offline for a few days.

AW1Ed

I was able to sneak a Glock in on the other day’s FGS. Yeah, he’s off-line for the holidays.

Mason

Didn’t even make any comments about that fancy new long range artillery piece. We can be assured he’s running silent.

AW1Ed

Heh. We’d STILL be hearing about that.

11B-Mailclerk

Silence might be because read your cannon article and went all syncope.

Blood rushed out of his head to somewhere else…

KoB

All of the above! Was offered access to the inherwebz, but turned it down. Could have lurked here Thursday on a device that had had it’s IP address already approved by admin from a previous comment made from it.

For the record Congrats to longtime Commenter “Friend” on the FIRSTNESS. Maybe the haters and jealous pots will chill for awhile now. And at the risk of violating Friend’s opsec, that one is also an adorable deplorable, that has giggled over bernasty’s minus 6 ft of on going social distancing, AND can cook. (Neil Diamond wrote/sang a song about “Sweet…” and “good times never felt…”) Some of y’all’s needs to pay more attention ’round heah!

I hope EVERYONE had a Merry Christmas…I know I did!

Apparently the regulars are asleep. I expect court challenges to the early posting of the WOT, invalidation of our posts for questionable character, and other assorted shenanigans. 😉

Make Hack Stone First Commenter On Weekend Open Thread Again!

Hack Stone would have commented sooner, but he was busy going door to door in Bethesda Maryland to see if anyone wants to purchase some Red Hat Software to put under the Christmas tree for the rugrats. Surprisingly, not many people are aware that Red Hat Software is what all the cool kids want this year.

Friend

Hack,
Caroline here…I finally did it..

New Commenter, welcome aboard. Nice start, too.

In fairness to Friend, LC and Hondo,
I’m announcing that I’m giving up my aspirations for WoT and I’m now abusing my F5 key for:

https://ammoseek.com/ammo/22lr

If you guys have any other suggestions, I’m all ears. This seems to be working out pretty nicely and I’m averaging down pretty quickly.

I just got a notification that there’s a package at the door.

YAY. MOAR AMMOZZZ!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you.

Chip,
I only got it because I checked while my dough was rising…

Who the fuck doesn’t these days.
As I’ve said, I’m waiting for confirmation of my S&W M&P 15-22 to be processed to get shipped to the local range/FFL place. I need to get the range folks to help me with a little “re” familiarization as I used to be qualified on the M-16 kinda regularly and now with this platform, I should pick it back up pretty quick.
I have hit orders from 18 cents on down to about 11.2 a round. I’m averaging down and have about 6,000 on hand with more than double that on the way. with the price at the range of 30 cents a round for purchase, pppbbhhhttttttt.

I had to hit the savings pretty hard but for a once (so far) in a lifetime of having a nice firearm in the house and kids starting training and myself getting to be able to have solid range time and training, it’s SO worth it. PLUS with this “climate”, I don’t think I need say more.

Just glad to be able to join the gang who knows which end the tube a round comes out and how to make that happen safely and soon, regularly and with accuracy. Also, I’ll have a decent amount of assistance with maintenance too as they have a solid smithy on site and some many hours of free maintenance with my membership.

Merry Christmas to all here at TAH!

Pulled out the 8″ telescope and viewed the conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn last nigh (rain and clouds would not allow me to see it on Monday). Was able to get a couple of photos via cellphone last night – not the best quality. Definitely a once in a lifetime event.

Merry Christmas to all!

Mrs. GB is prepping for the annual family Christmas Eve celebrations: snack foods, a reading of the Christmas Story from Matthew and Luke, and opening presents.

Favorite 2nd D-i-L informs us that we are weird re the present opening. Presents are passed out a round at a time, so everyone has one, then we take turns opening so that everyone has a chance to see and comment on what everyone else gets.

We enjoy it, and Lord willing we’ll go caroling around the GB AO afterwards – especially to our neighbor who lost his wife and his brother this year.

God bless you all.

OWB

Merry, Happy whatever to one and all!

“For Lease Navidad.” Yeah, that will work. Might even throw out a coupla Cuplianos Felizes for those in need of such.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas to everyone and their families out there in TAH land. 38th on the list.

Hack Stone

Time for a This Ain’t Hell original Christmas Story to post in the Christmas Eve Open Thread. For the record, the following story is 100% true. Way back in the day, when Hack Stone was younger, faster and skinnier, Momma and Poppa Stone would send their Marine sons Hack and Rollin a box of Christmas goodies, among which was the highly coveted and frequently gifted Hickory Farms Gift Box, loaded with all of those beloved poogie bait that every GI appreciates. So, 1984 comes along, and Hack is seven months into his first Okinawa tour. Mid December a large box arrives on Camp Schwab from Stately Stone Manor, and Hack being the good Marine that he is, leaves the packages unopened, not to be disturbed until Christmas Day. Among those gifts was a large heavy box gift wrapped. Another Hickory Farms Gift Box, just what the Jarhead ordered. Christmas Eve, and Hack Stone and his best bud who for some reason Hack Stone nicknamed Noodles, head out into Henoko to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. Hack and Noodles spend the evening drinking, well into Christmas morning at a few after hours establishments, and came through the gate about 05:30 Christmas morning. Hack and Noodles go to their respective racks and sleep through breakfast. And dinner. Waking up at just about 17:00, the chow hall is closed. The Enlisted Club is closed. The USO is closed. Even the geedunk is closed. By this time Hack and Noodles are two hungry hungry Marines. Don’t worry, Hack Stone to the rescue! “No sweat, I have that Hickory Farms box in my Christmas package. We’ll be eating sausage, gourmet mustard, cheese and crackers faster than you can say Daniel Bernath is not an Honorary Chief Petty Officer.” Hack and Noodles go over to Hack’s cubicle (days of the open squadbay), pull out that gift wrapped Hickory Farms box, rip off the wrapping and dig into….. a box of Trivial Pursuit. D’oh!!! And that is when Noodles saved the day, and we split a can of Spam for our Christmas Dinner. So… Read more »

I don’t know. Maybe if the writers included a scene where our young Marine, fresh from PI, is seated at an obviously formal family dinner.
With absolute respect and sincerity, he asks his 90 year old Great Aunt seated across to pass the fookin’ butter.
Without batting an eye, she does.
Fade to black…
So, what do you think?
*grin*

rgr1480

MAN!!! Just out of basic and home for Thanksgiving …. I really had to prepare myself NOT to ask for the “fookin'” butter or whatnot.

Thanks for reminding me of that day-long fear.

David

Trivial Pursuit… first discovered in the day room of the ‘chute riggers at Ft. Benning (best looking women in the Army, I think.) Still love that game 36 years later. Best ‘casual’ ever.

NHSparky

Merry Christmas to all, and to those on the East Coast, particularly in the Casa de Sparky AO, hunker down.

Just got the robocall from local utility company–70 mph gusts possible along with 2-3 inches of rain. Everyone from NJ to Maine is now on storm duty over Christmas. We’ve got the generator gassed up with an extra 10 gallons available, the shed and roof have been raked as much as possible, paths dug out, all the usual precautions.

Gonna be fun.

We’ve already had a few R&Rs (relay and reclose) events within the past hour, presumably branches, etc., falling on lines.

Hopefully we don’t lose it like we did over Thanksgiving a few years ago.

Commissioner Wretched

Somehow, I knew the WOT would be early this week! So I am ready with the week’s trivia drop … a Christmas gift to all of you, my dear friends. Merry Christmas from the old Commish! DID YOU KNOW…? Has the oldest restaurant in the world really been open for almost 900 years? By Commissioner Wretched As I was toying with the introduction to this week’s column, I considered serious ideas, mildly amusing ideas, but eventually settled on the very special holiday this Friday. Let me just wish all of you a very Merry Christmas – yes, even those who don’t celebrate the holiday – and allow me to reiterate my desire to see peace on Earth, goodwill to all, including an end to all the fractiousness in today’s society. We need to come together now more than ever. May the joy of the holiday season be yours! May the trivia of the day be yours as well. Enjoy! Did you know … … pajamas became popular nightwear during World War I? Residents of England developed pajamas (spelled “pyjamas” there) as an alternative to traditional nightgowns. The idea was to be able to quickly get outside during air raids in England in the first World War. (Who wants to run to a bomb shelter in their nightgown?) … the first marketed breakfast cereal had to be soaked in milk overnight to be made edible? Granula, the first breakfast cereal to be marketed as such, was invented in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson (1811-1895). It was created from heavy bran and graham nuggets that were so tough they had to be tenderized by soaking in milk overnight. The cereal was made by baking the graham flour and bran, crumbling up the brittle cakes, then baking them again. Needless to say, Granula didn’t catch on very well. (Not until you scooped a lot of sugar on them, anyway.) … a Chinese poem sounds like you’re repeating the same word? “Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den” is a classical poem which, in Mandarin Chinese, sounds very much like the same word repeated over… Read more »

Hack Stone

Since Commissioner Wretched brought up the topic of breakfast cereals, please indulge Hack Stone as he shares this pearl of wisdom:

Q: What do Zombies eat for breakfast?

A: Raisin Brain Cereal.

Thank you, thank you very much. If you enjoyed that, show your pleasure by going on line and purchasing some Red Hat Software for the Grandkids this Holiday Season from a proud but humble woman owned business that hasn’t had a sale to the federal government for over four years.

Hondo

This might be worth a mention in a future article, CW:

https://www.travelandleisure.com/hotels-resorts/japanese-hotel-oldest-in-the-world

Minor quibble, though. Pretty sure the national debt was approx $398 billion in 1971 vice $75 million.

https://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/histdebt/histdebt_histo4.htm

Commissioner Wretched

Thanks for the tip, Hondo … had the item about the hotel in the column two weeks ago. As for the debt, I must not have investigated as thoroughly as I normally do. Thanks for the correction, amigo!

Hondo

May have missed that comment (was traveling that week). Or maybe your column is where I saw the first reference to that hotel and simply didn’t remember where I’d seen it.

Either way: mea culpa.

Commissioner Wretched

My face is red … the national debt was $75 million in 1791, not 1971. Oh, brother.

And since CW started this weeks column with a restaurant, put your thinking caps on and name the only state capital that doesn’t have a McDonalds.

Buckeye Jim

Montpelier, Vermont is my guess.

Claw

Correctamundo./s

Hondo

Of course there’s no McDonald’s in Montpelier, VT. That simply wouldn’t do – it’s too much a symbol of capitalist exploitation to get the “head nod” from VT’s senior US Senator (AKA “Bernie the Commie”).

For all of you who may have missed it,
2019’s favorite internet Stolen Valor military phony,
Lester Kent Brown (Les Brown, “Sgt. Grumpy”,
Commander of the Elko POW*MIA Awareness ass.)
passed away on December 20.

Here is the link for the (pending) obituary.
Unknown if the fam will be honest with this,
or if they will pump him up in death,
just as they tolerated, and even enabled,
Les Brown pumping himself up in life.

Of course, Les Brown had ample opportunity to come clean,
and never did.
Let’s hope his obituary matches his documented actual military service.
In other more simple words, the truth.

Merry Christmas, everyone. We just enjoyed the traditional family Christmas Eve meal of chili. My late dad would have really liked the way my wife makes it. Tomorrow we’ll be here. Did Christmas with our youngest son and his family last Saturday. That included the 2 year old great grandson, as he continues winning his battle with leukemia.
The grand daughter will bless us with another great grandson in about 3 weeks.
The oldest son, his wife and daughter and her S.O. are in Oklahoma, so we’ll settle for a phone call.
Again, Merry Christmas to all of you.

So, the latest ‘secret witness’ of Sydney Powell, who claims to be a foreign intelligence expert is now identified. Terpsichore Maras-Lindeman confirmed she is the person in question, and is not only a trained “cryptolinguist”, but also a medical doctor, and has a PhD and an MBA. She also served in the Navy.

Except, uh, she’s not a medical doctor, doesn’t have a PhD and MBA, and served for less than a year in the Navy over two decades ago. She also was in trouble in North Dakota in 2018 for spending charity money meant for homeless shelters and wreaths for the graves of veterans on herself.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/sidney-powells-secret-intelligence-contractor-witness-is-a-pro-trump-podcaster/2020/12/24/d5a1ab9e-4403-11eb-a277-49a6d1f9dff1_story.html

All this follows on from the previous expert, a cybersecurity / military intelligence guy named ‘Spyder’ who… never worked in military intelligence.

The very best people here, folks.

Fake but accurate? If you are going to lie about your experience and education, you may as well go all in. This lady needs to relocate to Rockville Maryland and join forces with Jared Stern at Prudential Associates. She can hold the Gator Ade bottle while he pees when they are on stakeouts.
