Vietnam Vet killed in Iraq
Sad, sad news;
Maj. Steven Hutchison, of Scottsdale, Ariz., decided to re-enlist after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the death of his wife, his brother said.
Richard Hutchison told The Associated Press on Thursday that his older brother wanted to re-enlist immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks, but that his wife was against it.
He signed up again in July 2007 after she died, according to his brother and the Army.
“He was very devoted to the service and to his country,” Richard Hutchison said. “I didn’t want him to do it, but he had a mind of his own and that’s what he wanted to do.”
The Pentagon said Steven Hutchison was killed in Iraq on Sunday.
From the Army Times;
Steven Hutchison served in Afghanistan for a year after he re-enlisted and went to Iraq in October as a team leader of about a dozen soldiers who would train Iraqi soldiers how to fight. But, he said his brother’s mission changed and that he was working to secure Iraq’s southern border instead.
Now you know why I named that whole generation of servicemen as my heroes – they keep giving until there’s nothing more to give.
Richard Hutchison said his brother will be buried next to [his wife] Candy in Scottsdale, and that a funeral is tentatively planned for Tuesday.
Hutchison was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, at Fort Riley, Kan.
He’ll be glad to be with the woman he loved again.

I’m going to set my phone alarm for Tuesday morning, at which time I’m going to stop what I’m doing and have a moment of prayer – not silence, PRAYER – for Major Steven Hutchison. True heroes like Major Hutchinson have given their lives so that the rest of us can stay safe and peaceful here at home.
Rest in Peace, Major Hutchinson. I’m so thankful that this country keeps producing people such as the Major, and all the others who serve. If only we’d stop producing people like Pelosi, et al.
“…And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell, One more Soldier reporting Sir, I’ve served my time in Hell!” Godspeed and Bravo Zulu Major!
He’ll be glad to be with the woman he loved again.
Yes, he’ll rest well with her in his arms. God bless you, brave one.
Rest in peace, brother.
How sad to lose one so devoted to his country. God Bless him. His duty can never be understood by the spoiled ignoramuses that make up too much of our nation.
Just got the notice from the DOD in my email.
Maj. Steven Hutchison, 60, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died May 10, in Basrah of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Al Farr, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.
This is very sad news. His family is in my prayers.
Prayers to his family, friends, and his troops. A special man, who served his country with honor and dignity, has left us. Peace be with you, brother.
WOW, just wow. I sure am glad there are still so many people I can look up to…..God bless to the Major’s family.
A childhood friend of mine is being buried today…and while making a video tribute to him and his service to our Country, Taps plays in my brain but so does this song…Can you lay your life down, so a stranger can live?
Can you take what you need, but take less than you give?
Could you close every day, without the glory and fame?
Could you hold your head high, when no-one knows your name?
That’s how legends are made, at least that’s what they say.
We say goodbye, but never let go.
We live, we die, ‘coz you can’t save every soul.
Gotta take every chance to, show that you’re the kinda man who;
Will never look back, never look down,
and never let go.
Can you lose everything, you ever had planned?
Can you sit down again, and play another hand?
Could you risk everything, for the chance of being alone?
Under pressure find the grace, or would you come undone?
That’s how legends are made, at least that’s what they say?
We say goodbye, but never let go.
We live, we die, ‘coz you can’t save every soul.
Gotta take every chance to, show that you’re the kinda man who;
Will never look back, never look down,
and never let go.
Fair Winds and Following Seas Brother.
(oops, wasn’t done. It’s raining in my world, today.)
May the road rise up to meet you…
Godspeed, Sir.
Very appropo, Defend, thanks for posting that.
RIP
May Lord give His love and strength to his family in these difficult times
Another member of the Herd who left this earth way too early. His family is in my prayers.
“He was born July 17, 1946, and left Wil-mington in 1963 at the age of 17 to join the United States Army. He went through Basic Training, Advanced Infantry Training and Airborne School . In June 1964, he was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade on the island of Okinawa . On May 5, 1965, Sampley was deployed to Vietnam with the 173rd, where he served as a combat infantryman until April 1966. He participated in combat operations in the Iron Triangle, War Zone D, Ben Cat, the Ho Bo Woods and other areas of South Vietnam.”
My apologies. My comment in #16 should have been published to the Ted Sampley post here.
I served with MAJ Hutchinson in Afghanistan and this hits me hard. May God be with his family. I will cherish the fond memories I shared with him while in Afghanistan. Rest in peace brother!
