Horseback Pistols

Dupo, Ill. couple called 911 four times as shirtless man ransacked their garage. Officers never arrived.

Lauren Trager
Imagine calling 911 and no one ever shows up. It happened to a local couple when a weapon-wielding stranger ransacked their garage and wandered around their yard for hours. They called 911 four times, but no officer ever arrived.

Rose and Joe Everett’s peaceful place is their Dupo, Illinois home where they’ve lived for 40 years. But one night this summer, their peace was shattered, with all the evidence caught on camera.

“You could see the agitation in his face, the look on his face, it was scary. It was scary,” said Cathy Augustine, the couple’s daughter.

In their surveillance video you can see a shirtless stranger, first, ransacking their garage.

Joe Everett grabbed his gun.

“He said ‘you’re not going to shoot me, are you?’ and I said, ‘well, I sure am thinking about it,’” Joe Everett said.

But the man refused to leave all together and instead of shooting, the couple just hid inside. Naturally, they called 911 and according to dispatch tapes, a Dupo officer indicated he’d take the call.

But he never showed up.

Resident shoots suspect after he breaks into his Hermitage apartment

Joseph Wenzel
A man is in the hospital after police said he tried to break into an apartment in Hermitage, but once inside the tenant took his gun and shot him.

Officers were called to a reporting shooting in the 100 block of Bonnabrook Drive after shots were fired and a man was spotted running down the street.

Police said an unidentified man walked into Summit Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and hip.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the man, who was armed with a gun, forced entry to an apartment. The man inside the apartment told police that he was able to take the suspect’s firearm away.”

The unidentified resident told police that he “shot several times at the suspect causing the suspect to flee.”

Police said the apartment door “was forced open consistent with the statement of the resident.”

The man at Summit Medical Center “matched the description of the suspect in the home invasion.”

Ahhhh…Dupo, IL! Never has a town been more aptly named.

And it is in infamous St Clair county–the cook county on the river. Home of East St Louis, that mostly peaceful center of economic depression and misery.

What a crappy area to live in.

SgtMaj sounds like the musing of a person well acquainted with that area? On my last road trip out west I laid over between there, Bellville and O’Fallon. Dual purpose, to meet with a Compatriot and sightseeing, Cahokia and the POW Camp at Alton. Had a very nice eating meeting with my Compatriot, shorely enjoyed Cahokia Mounds, had to pay my respects to Alton at a distance due to the trash preventing decent folks visiting. My Compatriot had warned me of the nefarious types between where we were and the other side of the River. He also gave me the heads up that my Georgia CC Permit was no good in Illy noise and that basically just by being armed in Illy noise I was in violation of their laws. All of those memories popped up when I was reading this article. I must be lucky or Blessed cause I drove all thru that area with my car tag displaying the ANV Battle Flag SCV Logo.

Saw the same kind of trash on that trip going thru Nashville. This was in 2015. My last previous trip into Nashville was in ’96. No problems. Wouldn’t go thru either area now in less than Rifle Company strength, with air cover, and Arty Support with danger close Fire Mission capabilities.

Hey Boss, cool as hell linky on the Horse/Dueling Pistols of Washington/Lafayette. There are a number of counties in my AOR that he visited and the county histories have an entire chapter dedicated to telling that story. Right down the hill from my FOB Hawkins Hill is a marker dedicated to the Marquis and his visit. Tanks Mate!

Oh, btw…the citizens in both FGS shoulda, coulda, woulda, had oughta killed the bastards.

Gotta leave it with y’all for a bit bit. Duty calls to COP CRC TimberRanch

When dating in high school, the only father who truly scared me was a dad who had been a white sheriff’s deputy in ESL for 15 years. NO BODY tried anything with her.

I am all for the 2nd Amendment, but I’m also for a proportional response. I’m preaching to the choir here, but don’t just buy a gun for defense. We all need lower levels of defense to fit the situation.

To me, a good shot of pepper spray would have probably done the trick here, but if that didn’t work, i have a nice “tire knocker” that i bought at a truck stop which should have convinced these assholes to depart.

A good whack with an impact weapon to the knee always gets someone’s attention.

And as they leave, remind them that if they come back, the consequences get more severe.

If you just have a gun, it’s like going from zero to a thousand in one second. Not good… Usually. And these schmucks calculate that most will hesitate to use a gun.

Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH B Woodman

Mr Everett,
Since you are either unable or unwilling to use your gun in defense of self and family, please put it back in its original box (if possible), and return it for a refund to the nearest gun shop. with said refund money, I’m sure you can purchase a more appropriate home defense weapon, such as pepper spray, a tazer, and/or a wiffle bat. We here, at Shoot’em, Kill’em & Gut’em Law Firm, wish you the best of luck in all future confrontations.

Note that purchase and possession of a gun does not obligate you to use it to kill anyone as a first tier line of defense. There are always lesser defenses, such as: shooting close to the target (but mind what is behind the person), just to get their attention and let them know that you are willing and able to escalate the show of force to the next level – often called a “warning shot”; wounding the target, to DEFINITELY get their attention; and last, when all else fails, and the perp continues to be a threatening asshole, the kill shot.

Reminds me of the good old joke: Man called Police to report a burglary in progress. Police say no one is available. Man calls back two minutes later, saying he just shot the burglar. Police arrive en-mass, lights and sirens galore. Police find burglary still in progress, but no bullet holes. Police said ‘Hey; you said you shot him!’ Man says “Hey, you said no one was available’.
