Bronx dad who shielded kids in dealership shootout loses his jobs

The hero Bronx dad who was wounded as he shielded his three small children from gunfire at a Bronx car dealership this week lost his jobs because of the injury — according to a fundraising page that surpassed $100,000 on Friday.
Anthony Jefferson, 39, visited the used-car business on Boston Road in Eastchester around 7:30 p.m. Monday to look for a car to surprise the mother of his kids, Danica Jefferson, on her upcoming birthday.
Instead of leaving with a car, Jefferson found himself in the midst of a shootout — and was shot himself as he covered his children with his body to protect them from the bullets.
“Due to his injury, Anthony lost his job and has to have surgery to remove the bullet,” Serena Wingate, a close friend of Jefferson, posted on a GoFundMe page that hit $122,084 on Friday afternoon. The page’s goal was $24,100.
“This Go Fund me is to help this heroic dad with his medical bills and his kids with therapy. They are beyond traumatized.”
Anthony lost both of his jobs — one as a head painter at a maintenance company and another as a construction worker, Danica Jefferson told TMZ, declining to name the companies.
Sad if true. I find it hard to believe that a man would get summarily fired for protecting his kids and literally taking a bullet for them. If his injury is prohibiting his ability to work, he would have been covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act (if he’d worked there at least a year).
I feel like there’s a lot more to this story. We’ve seen too many crowdfunding scams to immediately believe everything we read on the Internets.

Welp, we don’t know for sure about the 2 jobs he lost, but we DO KNOW that he manned up as a Dad to protect those children. For that, he’s worthy of a Big BZ. Hero? Nah, just being a real Dad.
If he were fired from the 2 jobs, be nice to know who they are so they could be publicly shamed. Maybe they got rid of him so they wouldn’t have to pay for his medical? I agree, there’s more to this that we don’t know…yet.

Either way, shielding his kids was a true Father acting as a Father should act.
We all hope that we will become the same type of Father should that occasion arise.
Sadly, I have seen more than a few businesses who operate like that. “I don’t care what happened to you, I pay you to work and if you don’t, someone else will!”
He should have been able to return fire, but, y’know, New York….
Protecting your kids kids in any way is bad in NYC– that’s the state’s responsibility there, comrade!

Funny, I was trained in a building at Ft. Sam Houston named for a medic who did the same thing (granted it was casualties, concept is the same) at the cost of his own life. I think he might have earned the MOH, I think there might be a term for those actions…, oh yeah heroic comes to mind. When it comes to kids being in danger you protect them.
Oh yeah, absolutely. I am not questioning his actions in protecting his children, just his elevation to hero status.
It is normal male behavior to DIE for his own kids. It has been this way throughout history, and I don’t understand why hero-up what is normal standard male behavior, completely within expectations.
Traditionally, a hero is someone who risks his life to save others. The key word being “others”. Risking your life to save yourself or your kids is normal, expected, male behavior. It is only heroic when a person gets out of his way and risks his life for others.
Anyone would kick the windshield of a car after an accident to get out of a car on fire. Not everybody would run to a car on fire, break the windshield and extract a complete stranger from the car not knowing when the car is going to blow up and risking getting run over by other cars.
Very different things.
Perhaps my analogy is not that good, but what I am trying to convey is that covering your own kids with your body is something every male and every father would do.
Now, if those kids were just some random kids the guy didn’t know and he got out of cover and went to them to cover them with his body, that would absolutely count as heroic behavior.

You don’t get sick days with most construction trades. Maybe it isn’t fair, but the crews are usually as thin as they can be and still get the job done. He would have had to be replaced simply because he couldn’t do the job. My hope is that he was laid off, with his job possibly waiting for him when he’s back in form. At any rate, his Go Fund Me thingy is pretty impressive. Not sure how that works though. I can’t speak for the other job. My father was a commercial bricklayer, so I grew up working as a laborer when so commanded in that type of construction. Hard work!
