CSM John Collier; Facebook commando
Craig sent us another Facebook commando by the name of John Collier. I’m sure he has some time in the Army, but not enough to know what he’s doing when he puts together his phony finery;
His profile says that he graduated from Purdue University in 1986, but he has hashmarks on his sleeve that add up to 30 years of service – that means he’d finish his service in 2016. Maybe the picture is from the future.
Collier also has a Special Forces tab and a Ranger tab on his left shoulder, but no jump wings. And it looks like he has foreign jump wings over his right breast pocket, but no US jump wings.
I have no idea what the white cord on his left shoulder is, maybe you know, but I don’t.
If the picture was more clear, I’m sure I’d find something else in there. Maybe this will piss off Detn8tr because of the EOD badge, and he can wait until I’m in the office tomorrow to complain. At least there’s no infantry cord or CIB, for a change.
Category: Phony soldiers
I don’t think he used a photo of someone else and is using that as his profile picture. In his photo album there is a picture of the same guy in what appears to be civilian clothes sitting on a couch.
Okay, one of you computer wiz kids ‘splain somethin’ to me. There is a secret thread here. Oh, it’s the same as this one except there are only three comments on it. One is mine, one is USMCRet’s, and the other belongs to 10th MTN NCO. All three of us, I’m guessing, clicked on the picture once or twice to enlarge it. We then entered a comment. Those comments can be seen ONLY when I click on the picture again! They do not appear in this thread that you’re reading now. What gives?
https://tombguard.org/tomb-guards/?q=collier
Only one Collier ever served as a Tomb guard, May 91-Feb 95. His name was Anthony Collier, not James.
Sorry, Streetsweeper. You’re faster than me.
@51, It is the new “inbox stuff” topic trying to pull you back in.
@51 – Same thing would happen if you clicked on Ty Ziegel’s photo. It opens a new discussion thread. Don’t know why.
Just once, I’d like to see these fakers all be invited to a conference where they can tell each other war stories.
Wonder what the heck that regimental crest on his right pocket is.
@54. Nooooooooooooooooo.
NP Virtual. Going back to look at the photo again I see I missed the stereo system sitting on top of the entertainment center and surround sound speakers mounted up on the wall, LOL!
@56. A Stolen Valor convention! This is brilliant. Need more details.

@49: 2nd row center is the ASR (Army Service Ribbon) AKA “Welcome to the Army” ribbon, AKA “gay pride ribbon” (based on rainbow coloring.) Awarded to all Army personnel who completed initial entry training starting around 1980-81.
The one immediately to the left of that (yellow in the center and red on the ends) appears to be the NDSM, awarded to all military personnel who serve during wartime. Current NDSM period goes from the start of Desert Shield up to the present with no break so, like the ASR, it is essentially an “it-came-with-the-uniform” award.
Call me jaded but whenever I see a picture of someone with more than 8-10 ribbons, more than two badges one or more cords and more than one tab I think “Poser”. I’m sure there are a few out there, but then again they aren’t pasting their pictures all over facebook.
On his right pocket, it appears he’s wearing a drill daddy badge, as well. Well, it seems he has all his bases covered, i.e. Tomb Guard, drill daddy, foreign awards, SF, Ranger, EOD, etc.
Yep, I’d say he’s legit.
#64 OT…is it on some sort of red background, then?
martinjmpr: thanks for catching the NDSM – not sure how I missed that one. Will edit comment 35 above to reflect that ID.
Minor correction: Desert Shield NDSM period was from 2 Aug 1990 through 30 Nov 1995. Current NDSM period (GWOT) started on 11 Sep 2001.
He’s listed as a poser on the Home of Heroes site:
http://www.homeofheroes.com/rollofvalor/media_accuracy.html
VI: Yeah, the backing of the drill daddy badge is green, so I don’t know if it is that, or something else. It sure looks like one, but maybe the lighting is messing with it??
Here’s a pic of the real deal on a real CSM:
http://www.acc.army.mil/command-and-staff/leadership/images/murray_fullres.jpg
Yeah, Papa Insanity wore one…pretty familiar with it.
I went looking for regimental affiliation badges that looked like it (gold on a red background), but couldn’t find anything close.
And here’s the result of an FOIA request: http://www.homeofheroes.com/rollofvalor/phonies/records_collier.jpg
Damn, it looks like this jackass was claiming a DSC, DSM, and 2x SS, 2x BSM, and 4 PHs back in 2007. The claims were BS then; they’re BS today, too. See the link Mustang posted above.
Per Doug Sterner’s site, Collier apparently was a mechanic from 1982-1988. Most of his service was in the RC; no decorations other than an ASR. He was apparently discharged as an E1 after at least 6 years total service (active and RC).

Yeah, this individual looks to be a real “piece of work”. Probable for the “Smelly-16” of the next SV tourney IMO.
Mustang gets the gold star!
Mustang: apparently great minds think alike. (smile)
Oh look, he’s posting a link over at https://www.facebook.com/VeteranOwnedBusiness.
I won’t post it here but he posted his phone number 😉
Gotta give the the tool credit for having balls if not brains – apparently his business is in the Fort Bragg area.
Anyone know a good POC with the Fayetteville Observer who might be interested in doing a story giving this guy a bit of “publicity”?
I just can’t believe this guy has been at it so long. Then again, looks like he only got on FB last year.
Discharged as an E-1? Quality human all around no doubt…
We might want some screencaps of his Facebook page. I don’t do Facebook, so I can’t login to access his Facebook page.
Found an address and will be sending a news tip to the Fayetteville Observer about this guy soon.
You can’t say the Army didn’t give him a chance. Three separate tours, with the longest being 13 months. WTF?
And he was only eight promotions shy of E-9.
Make sure to get a screenshot of his profile at http://www.vetfriends.com/veterandirectory/?member=1158135 also.
An article about his ‘second’ Silver Star;
http://www.homeofheroes.com/rollofvalor/phonies/collier_john.pdf
@81. Holy Hannah.
My “Holy Hannah” reaction was to kp’s found article regarding Audie Murphy Collier.
“No regard to his personal safety”
A child wrote his Silver Star citation!
He’s a member of this VFW: https://www.facebook.com/ErnestSimmonsVfwPost6722LillingtonNc
I’m going to refer them to here.
@66: Hondo are you sure about the NDSM period ending in 95? I know the Desert Shield/storm ribbons ended about then but I had thought that the NDSM period that began in 1990 never actually ended. For some reason I thought the guys from my USAR unit who were mobilized for Bosnia/Croatia/Hungary in 1997-98 received the NDSM, while I didn’t because I already had one from the same qualifying period. In fact, I had thought that I did not qualify for a BSD (Bronze Star Device – subsequent award) for the NDSM even though I served in both the Afghanistan and Iraqi theaters (actually in Kuwait) for OEF and OIF post-9/11 because the qualifying period was the same.
Or maybe I’m confusing the NDSM with the CIB. IIRC there have only been 4 qualifying periods for the CIB which were (1) WWII, (2) Korean War, (3) Vietnam through 9/10/01 and (4) 9/11/01 to the present.
Whoops, just googled it, you’re right. NDSM qualifying period ended in 1995. Seems odd to me given that there were so many deployments between 95 and 01 but I guess they didn’t get the NDSM.
Hunter posted the .pdf file of a newspaper article earlier on the “other” page so it looks like Mustang came in second place.
http://www.homeofheroes.com/rollofvalor/phonies/collier_john.pdf
To get there, click on the picture and another page of 4 comments comes up. That badge on his right pocket indeed looks like he went to Drill Sergeant school.
Aw, damn 😉
Sorry for doubling up on ya, kp32.
“His actions reflect great pride in himself, his country his unit and the United States Army.”
I can’t recall ever reading a Silver Star citation that says the recipient’s actions “reflect great pride in himself.” Usually, it’s a reflection of credit but I guess when you write your own citation you can make it read however you want, eh?
#81 Mustang: That picture of “him” with his “buddies” looks like a VN setting? The uniform and boots seem so. I didn’t see where he claimed VN service but this is confusing.
@93 Looking at some of the other profiles on VetFriends, that appears to be the default profile photo.
@92: Yeah, I caught that too. Great “pride” in himself, his country, his unit and the U.S. Army? Yeah, I guess he takes “pride” in his PX-ranger uniform and fake medal citations, though I can’t imagine why. Maybe he prides himself on his writing skills and/or on his ballsy way of putting every decoration he could find on his uniform?
@93. Collier just claims they’re his buddies. It’s just part of the ‘build.’ No names, just two pics. Viewer gets to assume he is in one or both pics. Viewer should not do so.
Actually, streetsweeper, a link which brings up that article is in the article for which Mustang posted the link in comment 68 at 3:56PM.
The first meeting of this clown’s VFW post this year appears to be on 8 Jan 2013. It would seem that this might be a good topic for discussion at that meeting.
Perhaps someone knows how to find contact info for the Post Commander? I’ve come up dry so far.
I just got a response to my inquiry at the VFW post that he claims as his, and forwarded same to Jonn. They are on this, and will let us know what they find at their end.
Additional to my #98; Jonn n I have their quartermaster’s contact info. Would love to by a fly on the wall at that meeting.
Re @64 Just an Old Dog Says: Call me jaded but whenever I see a picture of someone with more than 8-10 ribbons, more than two badges one or more cords and more than one tab I think “Poser”.
My best bud (RIP) only wore 1 ribbon on his uni. But then, it was a DSC.
Maybe Collier would like to comment on last week’s thread re abolishing the CSM positions?
