Nations stole his father’s valor
We first discussed Grady Wayne Nations back in June, and today the Navy Times updates the story in a link sent to us by Kevin. Unfortunately, it’s behind a pay wall.
The younger Nations, now 43 and a first class aviation ordnanceman in the Navy Reserve, was convicted Aug. 28 by a court-martial of seven officers for unlawfully wearing his father’s medal. He also was found guilty of making false official statements — he somehow managed to work his father’s medal citation into his personnel record.
So I guess that’s how the citation had signatures on it from officers who served in the 60s.
Nations will receive no jail time for his fakery, which included donning the medal during funerals and wearing the ribbon daily. He will be reduced in rank to E-1 and dishonorably discharged, at which point he will forfeit all pay and allowances.
“We have a responsibility to ensure our sailors uphold the highest standards, and to hold them accountable when they fail to do so,” said Cmdr. Alvin “Flex” Plexico, spokesman for Navy Recruiting Command.
Yeah, and they also uncovered some other criminals at that particular recruiting unit;
The fallout from his conviction has left the future of Cmdr. Sheryl Tannahill, commanding officer of Navy Operational Support Center Nashville, Tenn., in doubt.
Her testimony under oath revealed her relationship with Nations may have been unduly familiar and violated the Navy’s fraternization standards. Nations was working under Tannahill’s command while serving as a recruiter assigned to Navy Recruiting District Nashville.
Tannahill is under investigation for her relationship with Nations, confirmed Cmdr. Tom Cotton, spokesman for Navy Reserve Forces Command. Capt. George Whitbred, head of Navy Region Midwest Reserve Component Command, initiated the investigation after the Nations trial.
An O-6 has been assigned to lead the investigation, Cotton said.
And, apparently, even people who know better fall for the “it’s classified” lie;
It was in 2011 that [Lt. Cmdr. Johnny Kelly] first noticed Nations wearing a DFC ribbon.
“He said he got it on active duty while serving with the Air Force, but that it was classified, and he couldn’t talk about it,” Kelly told Navy Times. “Seems the classified excuse is used a lot by people faking awards. But at the time I let it go — but it never sat well with me.”
Nations also discussed the award with Cmdr. Matthew Grahl, the former NOSC Nashville CO, according to the investigation.
“I asked [Nations] how he earned the award,” Grahl reportedly said. “He replied with a cryptic answer of something he did during [Operation] Desert Storm as part of VRC-40 with some SEALs. Seemed odd to me, as I was in VRC-40 from 1996 to 1999, and any work we did with the SEALs was purely training para-drops and we weren’t trained in any of the operational aspects of a SEAL insertion.”
Despite his reservations, Grahl testified at the trial that he had no reason to doubt Nations because of his stellar performance record.
So those of you who tried to defend Nations in the first discussion, I don’t think this is the outcome you were telling us to wait for.

@50 – I think you’re right. Reductions in rank, forfeitures, etc. are usually automatic unless there is a pre-trial agreement to stave off punitive monetary reductions in pay (so the member can take care of family, if married, that is). The D/D usually comes later, once it goes through the final appeal process. Chances are, this person was assigned to appellate leave awaiting final decision on his D/D. Then he’s done altogether.
Done.
While I’m not a JAG, I can’t think of a single case where a court-martial sentence has been altered a whole lot, especially dropping a D/D.
There might be some time involved getting the paperwork processed, but for all intents and purposes, this clown was done the day he was found guilty.
If my mind serves me correctly, D/D’s are almost always upheld. I’ve never heard of a case where it wasn’t. Just pointing out that from my experience, there was usually a length of time after the post-trial process for final decision, but maybe things have changed since I was around.

@46. Jep. Sorry that I did not see your scrawl earlier. What entitlement you have to address someone is not always a matter of legalisms or rights, though neither applies here, by the way. There are other qualifications, such as whether in addressing someone, the writer is worthy of doing so. This is something that is usually learned through a proper upbringing and is most glaringly illustrated by the Westboro gang. They may be legally entitled to protest a military funeral but most of us believe fervently that should not. Similarly, you may be entitled, technically, to address a Gold Star Mother but you are unworthy to do so and, if you had any sense of decency at all, you would not. Is that clear or should I restate it for you in other words?

Let me try to explain this in terms you’ll understand, since you just don’t seem to “get it”. For your benefit, I’ll try to keep it simple and use short words when possible.
1. Nations may have been good C-A-C-O. That not matter.
2. Nations liar. He thief.
3. Nations steal from own family. He steal own dad’s D-F-C.
4. Nations lie. He claim D-F-C his. It not his.
5. Nations get caught.
6. Navy (and rest of military) think this one of worst things Nations could do.
7. Navy try him.
8. Navy find him guilty.
9. Navy throw his ass out with D-D. Him lucky not to get time.
In short: it doesn’t matter how good a sailor Nations’ allegedly was. He did something that is considered a cardinal sin in the military. And he stole from his own family to do that.
He got caught, tried, and convicted. He got thrown out on his ass.
He fully deserved it.

I happen to know a bit about Nations and this GF is she is who I believe she is. It’s crystal clear to me that she and Nations like to spend their private time on the davenport. She is a scrawny, mouthy, buck toothed wench who runs her mouth and has no respect for marriage yet she wonders why she can’t keep a man. She just destroys relationships and if she happens to have a kid so be it. BTW, she was on the “Honor” guard which I find rather ironic.
In my previous post I meant to say I know a bit about Grady Nations and if the GF is who I think she is she was called the “duty booty.” I have first hand knowledge of this. My husband joined the Navy Reserves in Nashville and that was the beginning of the mysterious phone calls, special ring tones, phone on vibrate and secret text messages. This went on for well over a year. I happened to listen to his voice mail thinking it was a work message only to discover it was a female crying on the other end about losing their baby and she was at the ER. I recognized the voice. This woman would call me and act as if she had the wrong number. I finally got her name. Of course my now ex said he didn’t recognize the voice and then he did. Said she was crazy. I called her and she said she got tje wrong number…yeah right! Games, games, games…I have seen this person. I was stunned! Unbelievable what low standards some men have when they have a good thing at home. She did me a favor. My marraige ended with violence over this whole deal and for several years she would text me, call me, harass me. She took pleasure in telling me all the BS he said about me. None of it true. My ex is Grady Nation’s mini me. I can’t say for sure who is making the threats but I have gotten the and I have recorded them and downloaded the text messages. This female is part of Team Grady and she is evil. There is more to all of this but we all know these people will get what they deserve. BTW, i did reveal her identity in my previous post if you read between the lines…
Hey, does anyone know what happened to Nation’s partner in crime, LCDR Tannahill? I know she was fired, but never learned if they put her out of the Navy or whitewashed the scandal and let her put on 0-6. If they did, that would be criminal.

I am a friend of them both and seen the pictures of the Wedding and there was nothing fake going on in those pictures. Nothing but love and happiness on their faces. I must ask, honestly, why does it matter to you or anyone else, unless you were the fool chasing him or a friend of the fool who chased after him for years. @86 TAH hunts posers. It’s our experience, and the blog backs it up, that the dishonor found in posers bleeds over into every facet of their lives. We have dozens if not hundreds of “I knew him when I was married to him/dating him/living with him” stories. Only very rarely are they pleasant stories. Most of them relate a history of lies and in many cases, criminal activities. Now if you say these two are happy, and it’s real, that’s great. But we are cynical because we see far more of the other kind.

Nations is a good man and an awesome father to his kids and I have always seen him treat his wife with respect and love. As for cautioning his wife, there is no reason to do that. She is a strong woman, she has loved this man for a long time and has always been by his side, as he has her. No matter what stones were thrown at her or them. After all they have been through and too still look at each other the way they do, stay together and get married is a testimony in itself.
You will disagree and so will others but that is okay because you are entitle to your opinion. The bottom line is, you, me and others were not put on this earth to judge. The only judging that matters is from God.

Nobody had responded to them, and the thread had been quiet since – until you commented here today. Prior to your first comment today, they were also the only comments since mid-June. I believe I noted that fact above also.

Regardless I’d like to thank you again for helping give Nations’ dishonest and dishonorable behavior, his court-martial, and his Dishonorable Discharge from the Navy some additional visibility. Perhaps some who missed it the first time around will now see this, and learn what a dishonorable, lying ass Nations truly is. It’s not everyday you see someone try to steal valor from his own family.
And you should sleep well – secure in knowing you helped make those facts known to a wider audience.
