Navy kiss seals the year of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal

We have a late-breaking nomination for image of the year. This photograph would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. With the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta was able to win a raffle that gave her the first off-the-ship kiss, a Navy tradition, with her girlfriend of two years, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell.

Associated Press (Brian J. Clark) When the couple began dating, they had to hide their status under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The 17-year-old policy was repealed in September. On Wednesday, in front of Gaeta’s entire ship and a cheering crowd, the two women made history as the first same-sex couple to share the coveted kiss.

#46: @44 – “Yes, intrusive. As in lobbying for government intrusion into your life by legal means. Intrusion where government doesn’t belong.”

I missed something, CI. Is someone seriously lobbying Congress (or any state legislature) to make homosexuality illegal?

Brian

#38 – Your, um. “personal entertainment value”, huh? LOL

I’m sure that your bizarre comments make perfect sense to you. But they won’t make sense to any rational person.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

I have only one question regarding this issue. Any more photos?

On another note: Anyone notice that the pier is an absolute crap heap? I guess they don’t dress the pier or cordone off a receiving area near the brow. And what’s with the petty officers in the background lugging lines/shorepower with service dress uniforms?

Guess the Oak Hill is living down to it’s name: Cell Block 51.

#53 – CI is thinking, “Helloooo sailor!!!” LOL

CI

@55 – Given that the women in the photo seem to be attractive…I suppose that’s not far off the mark.

CI

@51 – Look around and take your pick. Texas GOP platform of 2010 is an example. But the groups in question, the ‘family/traditional values’ groups who collude with a certain party’s candidates for office….all support bans on sodomy; usually with the requisite ‘God will punish the nation if we don’t” sort of corollary.

Surprised that your not on top of these political machinations, what with the liberal media and all.

I feel so open minded now.

Going home for a whiskey and a cigar.

Not really sure what the problem is here. Some of us simply don’t want to watch other folks groping each other in public places. For that viewing choice, we seem to be accused of all sorts of strange affiliations. (Not that anyone here makes unsubstantiated assumptions. Oh, no!)

Is this yet another example of those who preach tolerance not being able to practice it?

Whatever.

CI

@59 – Who’s accusing you of being affiliated with anything?

But more to the point, you’ve identified a problem, as you see it.

What’s the solution?

OWB

What problem did I ID? I said, “Not really sure what the problem is here.” That alone is an admission that I do not have the solution to a problem I cannot name.

But simple reading comprehension now appears to be a significant part of the problem, maybe???

CI

“But simple reading comprehension now appears to be a significant part of the problem, maybe???”

Apparently so. See below.

“Some of us simply don’t want to watch other folks groping each other in public places.”

“What about the minions out here who simply do not want to participate, even if it is just through observation, ANY public displays of affection?”

You seem to pose this as a problem. You don’t want to see others ‘groping each other’ in public. Are you just venting, for it’s own sake, or is having to see that act a problem for you?

If it’s not a problem as you regard it, fine. If it is, then surely there must be some recourse.

Doc Bailey

I could make many comments, but I don’t want to be sounding like a Lecherous old dude.

CI

@63 – Hell, don’t be bashful…..you’ll have company….

OWB

Ah, I see – even though you directed us to #59, that is really not what you wanted to discuss? (Reading minds is not one of my talents, just so you know.)

#57: Thank you for making my point. Not a single example. You perceive opposition to promoting gay lifestyles with outlawing homosexuality altogether.

Sorry, standing up for traditional values is not hatred. Hating people who are traditional is.

Now, who’s the ‘phobe?

CI

@65 – What in the world are you talking about?

@66 – Sure….I’m the hater, because I’m the one who wants to use the force of law to restrict peoples actions…..right. So a plank in the political platform of a major party is merely ‘opposition’? Said party would never, ever intend to act upon criminalizing consensual acts [history aside]?

Clearly, you haven’t waltzed through the rhetoric of the ‘traditional values’ groups. Standing up for your values is living them. Coercing everybody to abide by them is another discussion altogether.

#28 Fair enough. Submarines don’t crash into Japanese fishing trawlers on their own or anything, now thats an accomplishment. Or groom officers so well that their lack of ability is not noticed until their well mid way in said career and are skippering their own boat. yeah GO NAVY!
