Million Vets March

| October 13, 2013

The March on DC today, to take back our memorials kicked off on a drizzly morning when some veterans took down the barricades around the World War II memorial as well as some of the others. Our buddy, The Sniper, was there;

Sniper at the Memorials

From Fox News;

“Veterans have proven they are not timid and we will not be timid and calling out any that use military as pawns,” [former Governor Sarah] Palin told the crowd assembled at the Million Vet March on Memorials. “We can only be America, home of the free, if we are America, home of the brave.”

Protesters shouting “U.S.A.” and “Tear down these walls” are putting the blame squarely on President Obama and Democratic congressional leaders.

From Twitchy, some folks carried the barricades to pile up in front of the White House;

From DC local News;

Bruce Wing and his wife traveled from Atlanta to support the veterans.

“The shutting down of these memorials, if one looks at right and wrong, that’s clearly wrong,” he says.

I wish I could have been there.

It reminds me of our “GATHERING OF EAGLES”, when a bunch of us (and I was there) went to protect the Viet Nam Memorial from threatened vandalism.

John Robert Mallernee

I wonder what those armed park rangers are going to do now?

Will they attack the veterans?

If so, will the veterans resist?

RunPatRun

The park police were busy trying keeping people from relieving themselves in the bushes since all the restrooms are locked. They didn’t do anything when the barricades were transported from points on the Mall to the South Lawn.

The Vietnam Memorial was open and staffed with cordial Rangers. The WWII Memorial is open, but looks sad with the fountains off and the pool turning green.

“Some folks carried the barricades to pile up in front of the White House”

Classic!!! Be great if they blocked off congress!!

John Robert Mallernee

Maybe all the adverse publicity on national television is causing a shakeup in the National Park Service administration?

AW1 Tim

Apparently Chauncey Gardiner has had enough. Mounted & foot riot police are being called up and have started to block streets.

Smitty

the Fox article states that they are protesting the government shut down, which isnt what they are doing at all. they are protesting the “make it hurt” campaign the administration is running. the shut down effects such a minuscule percentage of the population, and the majority of the population doesnt care about it, so the administration has to make people feel the pinch. that is the sole reason behind closing open air monuments and parks. Vets are protesting being used as political pawns and against the “make it hurt” campaign, not the shut down itself

Is Joe Biteme loading his shotgun?

James Dunn

Godspeed to all of you. We have the most disgraceful government in Americas history

Just an Old Dog

EBT/SNAP cards arent working in Walmarts either in someplaces. DC is pissing off everyone.

TN

It gives me a warm fuzzy to see Our Veterans standing up and acting against these outrages, and even moreso that it did get at least some MSM coverage.

Stacking the barricades up at the WH? Oh that’s just icing on the cake. I do hope someone put the titanium bicycle locks on them, as was suggested in TAH comments previously!

OldSargeUSAR

What Smitty @7 said. Exactly!

Club Manager

God bless them all.

Were there any Congressmen standing with them? Like with the immigration rally. I’ll wager there were none and I am disappointed that all four of our Arkansas veteran Congressmen were not there. Lead, follow or get out of our way and I guess they opted for the later.

Obama is closer to being on the North end of “taint” than Commander in Chief.

John Robert Mallernee

@13 CLUB MANAGER:

Two (02) congressmen were there, and spoke.

One of them was from Utah.

Sarah Palin was there, too.

A Proud Infidel

DAMN, I wish I could have been there KUDOS to all that went!!

2/17 Air Cav

Sarah Palin was there AND mingling, taking pics with folks, after she spoke. Cruz and Lee (Benghazi) spoke. The Pledge was recited, The Star Spangled Banner was sung, as was God Bless America—and the gates were down and piled up willy nilly. It was a sight to see them later carted off blocks away to the White House in a gesture of ‘return to sender.’ I was impressed by the age range. Clearly there were Vets there from WW II right to Iraq/A-tan, and all wars and conflicts in between. My personal highlight (aside from chatting with OWB, that is) was when an Honor Flight of WW II Veterans from Puget Sound arrived. As luck would have it, I was positioned exactly where two slabs of sidewalk in front of the Memorial caused the Veteran’s wheelchairs to slam stop. After two chairs were turned around and backed up the bump, causing a traffic problem, the third and subsequent ones one I pulled over it by reaching down and grabbing their chair’s lower frame. My God, what a gift that was, to be able to do one miniscule thing for these men as they wheeled to their Memorial. One Veteran sported a “Pearl Harbor Survivor” cap. Most extended their hands. Too cool for me!

When I meant to leave, I had to walk by 1600. I got there in time to see about a dozen police in riot gear ready themselves to wade into the crowd of several hundred that had gathered smack dab in fron of the White House. There was a scuffle–amazingly involving a fellow carrying Old Glory and the SS police (the uniforms) were massed up top near the WH in case. All in all, though, police were clearly not looking for trouble. And I must say that was very wise. There’s more but that’s enough for now. It was good.

@16 2/17 AIR CAV:

Thank you, Sir!

Excellent SITREP!

Wish I could have been there.

I had the pleasure of getting to the Lincoln Memorial just ahead of the group. There were two cops moving people back at first. When they saw the size of the protesters, the radioed in and got out of the way. The barricades quickly followed. Got some good shots from the top of the stairs.

OWB

It was a good day. A very good day.

Melony

@13 Senators Mike Lee and Ted Cruz were there today. Representatives Michelle Bachmann, Louis Gohmert and Steve King have been at the memorials for 2 weeks solid letting veterans and others into the memorials. From a speech I saw from Bachmann at the Value Voters Summit she said that Representative Steve King now carries wire cutters with him at all times…

streetsweeper

One fuck nuts was there wearing a backpack and police asked him about it, he claimed it was loaded with guns waiting to talk to US Rep.David Reichert(R)WA. Let the crazy veteran meme’s begin, so far, he was the only one cuffed and stuffed.

TN

After seeing that this did make it into the MSM, I decided to see what those not Fox were saying…

I caught the tail end of a CNN report saying the protest was “against the shutdown.” Not at all!

And now I see a talk show (on CNN) hosting a Republican and someone else, LZ Granderson, “a CNN Commentator” with the host asking the Republican if he is embarrassed that the protest was organized by “members of his party” and “the tea party.” BS! This was organized by Veterans!

Both employees of CNN are clearly Obama supporters, but the “guest/commentator” appears to have more objectivity than the host.

They are also showing two individuals in the protest wearing ACU patterns (a boonie cap on one and a jacket on the other). This is disheartening, but I should point out that the majority in all the videos I’ve seen (so far) have not stepped over that line.

Sniper and Uncle Jimbo, I saw you both there but figured that you didn’t want to be bothered… Both with families and all

By the way, they couldn’t control the dismantling of the barrycades but they made certain the water was so that there were no pools as there should be, nor pretty water shoots and sprays. But in the heart of the surround is a wall adorned with hundreds of stars, each representing 100 Americans who Fell in WW II. Those stars affected me like my first visit to the Vietnam War Memorial. Obama and Co. can keep the water from flowing but they cannot turn off what is in our hearts.

Lucky

The group formed a human shield to prevent barricades being erected at the Lincoln Memorial, and several DCMPD Officers actually DIRECTED us to the WH, and told us to deposit the Barry-Cades there…

Lucky

If anyone wants to see pictures, shoot me an email, and I will send you some, I took about 100…

B Woodman

Nice protest at DC (District of Criminals). I wish I’d been there. I wonder what similar protests (if any) were made around the rest of the country, at other national parks and open air places? I know UTAH opened its STATE parks, when DC shut down the NATIONAL parks. Maybe we should have just seized them.

CAs6

B Woodman,I agree. Utah needs to take permanent possession of all the federal land in the state. Clinton sure pulled a fast one with the Grand Staircase deal in 1996, Utah should use this to fight back.

THIS is the best photo of the day:

He took that Barrycade all the way to the White House.

How sad it is that those who’ve given the most for us feel compelled to give even more because of what’s going on in this country.

Thank you ALL for your service!

NHSparky

Lucky–maybe if you can make contact with Jonn or TSO and send the pics to there could be a post of it?

OWB

CS, this may be the same gent I saw with his family. Just beautiful.

Unfortunately the only thing being reported by most networks is some jackass with a confederate flag shouting for Obama to put down his koran. All it takes is one.

Ex-PH2

@37, I didn’t see anything like that reported anywhere, and I get all the major networks.

Anonymous

A walk in the sun!

OWB

@ #38: Oh, yeah, he was there, and, of course, all cameras managed to focus on him. Surprise, surprise. Not sure if he ended up being arrested, but several of OUR folks tried to get him settled down and gone.

Were I guessing, I’d go with he was a lefty plant. Maybe not, but there are always a few of them trying to make all us normal folks look strange. Simple logic would seem to dictate that the comparison to everyone else NOT acting like that would say more than finding the one fool and reporting it as if representative of the whole only makes sense when you have an agenda to push instead of reporting reality.

NR Pax

@40: You’re talking the skinny dude with the Confederate flag? Guess I missed him acting up.

Ex-PH2

Evening news: Senate confabs got 10 seconds, agreement seems to be within reach. Vets’ protest(?): 5 seconds, no view of guy with Confederate flag.

The Chicago Marathon got 2+ minutes, and the return of Derrick Rose to the Bulls in November was also featured.

And then, there is that sushi bar on Clark Street.

OWB

@ 41: Not entirely certain – don’t remember seeing him myself. But, several other folks told me about altercations they had with him. And the cameras on him pretty consistently.

Probably the same dude, but since this is all second hand info, must hedge a bit. You know how that goes – when you hear a similar story for the third time in an hour, you start thinking there might be something to it. You were likely already at the Lincoln Memorial when I started hearing the stories and who knows where he was by then. Maybe off with the relocated “barrycades?”

Just A Vet

@16 2/17 Air Cav… My son who works for TSA was the one who screened the “Pearl Harbor Survivor” on his way out of Seatac!!! He had thanked my son for his service and my son couldn’t believe that a WWII Veteran would Be Thanking him (they are working without pay during the shutdown)for working. He said he had been waiting for this day for a long time and when he found out my son was also a combat Veteran he again thanked him for that service. I told my son he now should understand the meaning of what a “Band Of Brothers” stands for. He said he felt humbled and was hoping he’d be on duty when they returned and would try to talk to them some more! Small World. 😉

UpNorth

@#22, Streetsweeper, maybe the fuck nutz is related to the Green River Killer, that’s why he wanted to talk to Reichert?
@#29, Woodman, there is this from Gettysburg, http://photos.yorkdispatch.com/2013/10/13/video-photos-marchers-make-way-to-battlefield/#15

As a veteran, (OEF X-XI) I am fully in support of our brother vets tearing down these walls and I am sickened that the mainstream media gave more attention to the communist scum of Occupy Wall Street than our veterans upholding our rights to visit our memorials. But could we please get someone better than Sarah Palin to be “representing” us and speaking. She hasnt served, not a vet. She is just as much a grandstander as our president and IMHO she has no right to stand with our veterans, or with us. She would capitalize on us for her own political gain too.
