“High ranking” officer sentenced for child solicitation

| August 29, 2013

MCPO Ret. In TN sends us to a link to a story in which 31-year-old Ryan Gericke was arrested for soliciting an undercover agent who he thought was a 15-year-old girl. Here’s the headline;

Ryan Gericke

After he was sentenced, his lawyer appealed to the court for bail reduction based on the fact that Gericke is a “high ranking” officer. He got his lowered bail, but a quick check of Army records says that his high rank is 1st Lieutenant in the Alabama National Guard. It’s probably a high rank to all of the cadets and 2d Lieutenants out there, but not to anyone else in the Army. I don’t even think that even a major would be considered a high rank in the way that the lawyer meant it.

Gosh. I guess he’s the last person on earth to figure out that every 15 year old girl wanting to hook up over the internet is actually a 50+ year old male cop. But then again, he IS a lieutenant . . . serves him right . . .

USMCE8Ret

Wonder what made him decide to get sexual misconduct out of the way so early in his career? Usually, these perv’s wait ’till their at least a senior field grade officer or flag officer.

brian

Every LT I’ve ever met thinks he’s high ranking… for about 35 seconds

Roger in Republic

I would have reduced his bail to Zero, and locked his perverted ass up. h If nothing else he is a danger to the 14 year old female community. Let him sit in jail while he awaits sentencing.

Twist

Have a seat right here and lets talk about why you are soliciting sex from a 15 year old.

Hondo

Guess this guy never heard Jimmy Buffett’s “Livingston Saturday Night” or heard the term “jailbait”.

Then again – if he’s still a 1LT at age 31 and isn’t prior enlisted, it’s possible he may not exactly be the sharpest knife in the drawer.

BCousins

@4 Roger, I agree absolutely. As a retired senior field grade product of OCS I wonder where we are getting officers these days with such low morals. We even have academy cadets and midshipmen up for rape and other felonies. Who the hell is selecting these dirt bags and calling them officer material?

LZ

I have not even the slightest idea of what his rank has to do with his bail.

“You’re a child molester.”
“Yes, but I’m an officer.”
“…”

@8 LZ–I think it’s that whole “Officer and a Gentleman” thing. He may be a perverted child molester but his handshake is his bond. We can trust him!

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Yeah I wouldn’t count on that high ranking officer sh1t lasting much longer…f#ck bail, he was found guilty, hold his 4ss until sentencing and then hopefully he is jailed for most of the rest of his adult life if not all of it.

Smitty

people somewhere actually have positive opinions of officers? at least this one will get locked up before he actually hurt a young girl or got a good soldier killed in combat. i thought captain became automatic a few years back after 3 years in service (maybe that was just for active duty), this guy is a 31 year old 1lt? hes just trying to set the standard, isnt he? claiming high ranking as a O-2, he might be high ranking enough that his platoon Sgt doesnt tell him to shut the fuck up in front of privates.

@9 LostOnThemInterwebs

Two thumbs up on that meme!

Hondo

Smitty: promotions are sometimes slower in the ARNG. But even considering that, if he was commissioned after completing college at 22 or 23, that’s still 8 or 9 years with one bar. Seems kinda long to me, even considering he’s ARNG, unless he’s got some prior enlisted time.

The timing works if he enlisted for 3 or 4 years, got out, went to college, and then got his commission.

In either case, he’s still a sh!tbird. Can’t see any good reason why a 30 or 31 year old guy would intentionally seek out an underaged kid for “horizontal mambo”.

2/17 Air Cav

That’s a nice deal–post conviction bail. He is to be sentenced in a month–if they can find him.

@6 – That’s the second Jimmy Buffett reference here in a week. Time for a concert.

A Proud Infidel

Smitty, Hondo, anymore, a Commissioned Officer HAS to have at least earned his/her Bachelor’s before they’re allowed to get promoted to O3 and up. That, and in the NG, there has to be a slot open for that rank before you’re promoted. Either way, that soon-to-be-ex-LT is gonna be one more cellblock bitchboy for Bubba & Thor!!

Common Sense

@14 – You just can’t tell with the ANG. My soon-to-be son-in-law leaves for basic training in Oct, just a couple of months shy of 27. He’s the second oldest in his student group, the oldest is 32. He’ll be finishing his degree (his second) when he gets back next summer.

John Robert Mallernee

Knowing how the United States Army works, he’s probably already been summarily forced to resign his commission for “Conduct Unbecoming”, or at least, that’s how I’ve seen it done in past cases – – – , RAPIDLY – – – – , within forty-eight hours!

Gosh, gee whillikers, if’n we’re REAL lucky, maybe we’ll get to see the video on a future episode of, “TO CATCH A PREDATOR”.

By the way, I ain’t seen that show in a looooong time.

Is it still on the air?

It was one of my favorites.

Ex--PH2

I think a ‘PEDO’ tattoo on his person some place that only fades when his sentence is up is appropriate. Or better yet, put the tatt on him when he leaves the lockup.

Red Leg JO

@12. CPT is 4 years now just like it was before 9/11 (it dropped because we were extremely low on CPTs) and it was never “automatic”, it was always a board, it just had insanely high selection rates. this year was about a 90% select rate which is about the historical rate before 9/11.

Virtual Insanity

Ozark is right outside the gate of Ft. Rucker. Heavily populated with former/retired military folks; in fact, the mayor for a long time was retired Army.

I’m guessing his “senior officer” claim probably didn’t hold much water there.

None of the ALARNG guys i’ve contacted seem to know this guy.

John Robert Mallernee

I just now found the web site for, “TO CATCH A PREDATOR”.

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/10912603/

I don’t know if it’s still on television, but it looks like you can still see everything at the web site.

Thus, I’m going to add the link to the list of “RECOMMENDED WEB SITES” on my own personal web site, “OUR ETERNAL STRUGGLE”.

@7 BCousins
As far as the service academies go a lot of them are political appointees. So long as they have no record of moral turpitude they are boarded by grades, references and community service. Lots of Big Men on Campus get in. We know how tough OCS selection can be, and ROTC selection is a lot like the academies. Good grades, athletics and references. Again, no criminal record as a juvenile and you are home free. My nephew was commissioned out of ROTC a couple of years ago and just got back from the Stan. You would be hard pressed to find a better young man. He takes honor very seriously. He was commissioned in his dead grandfather’s Dress Blue Uniform. As a matter of fact, both of his Grandfathers were Army Officers during WWII. I asked him why he choose the Infantry branch. As the Honor grad of his class he could have gone into another branch. He said that at the age of seven he knew he wanted to be a soldier, and the infantry was where all the REAL soldiers were.He went directly to Ranger School before reporting to the 101 st. I am slightly biased but he truly is one of Americas finest.

I wish I could find a really good looking AMBER ALERT widget to put on my web site.

For some strange reason, the official government operated AMBER ALERT web site doesn’t offer a web site widget to the general public.

Other web sites do advertise AMBER ALERT widgets, but they don’t work on my web site, and besides, they’re not the OFFICIAL government version I want (which presently doesn’t exist).

The best I’ve been able to do so far is just embed a “NATIONAL CENTER FOR MISSING AND EXPLOITED CHILDREN” widget, which is specifically limited to Mississippi.

Any suggestions, Folks?

Mike

Well it IS Alabama! Lol

thebesig

I remember one of your articles way back… about that knucklehead that chained himself to a fence. There was a picture of him being dragged down the sidewalk, with his ACUs on. The clown was a 1LT. A board convened on him, and voted for his removal from the guard.

This might be the same fate waiting for the above ding dong. He’s still in AKO, as a 1LT as previously stated. His phone area code is an Alabama area code.

Green Thumb

Just turn him lose in Alabama.

The good citizens of that state will solve this problem.

Wrench Monkey

What’s the difference between a PFC and a 1LT?
The PFC has been promoted twice…….

Green Thumb

@31.

Rude.

I would posit that the PFC is shitfaced drunk while the 1LT is doing your girlfriend.

ROGER IN REPUBLIC:

Unless you’re as old as I am (I was in the old Republic of Viet Nam), you probably won’t remember this incident, although your son’s choice of branch is what reminded me.

I don’t remember the year, but – – – ,

It was back when troop morale was at its lowest throughout the United States Army, during the closing years of the VERY unpopular and controversial war in the old Republic of Viet Nam.

During the graduation ceremony at the United States Military Academy, the cadet who was the head of the graduating class, who because of his grades and accomplishments could select ANY branch he wanted, walked up onto the stage and LOUDLY announced, “INFANTRY!”, to the amazed shock of everyone there, who then immediately erupted into wild, enthusiastic cheering.

The story immediately went global, via the “ARMY TIMES” and the “STARS AND STRIPES” newspapers, “SOLDIERS” magazine, and of course, the Armed Forces Radio and Television Network.

Do any of you guys remember that?

I’ll bet HONDO can probably find the original news report.

Thank you.

One day, a 2LT and a First Sergeant wrecked into each other at an intersection on Ft. Bragg. The 2LT was nervous and shaking, so he 1SG pulled out a flask and said, “Here, Sir, maybe this will help.” The Lieutenant took a belt, winced, and said “Thanks, First Sergeant!” As “Top” capped the flask and put it away. The Lieutenant asked “First Sergeant, aren’t you gonna take a drink?” and he said “Sure thing, Sir, right after the MP’s leave!”.

@36

A SGM gets diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer. His CDR visits him on his death bed and asks him:
“Do you have a last wish we might grant you?”
“Yes…” Gasps the SGM “please promote me to 2LT before I die”
Surprised by his wish the CDR asks “Why that?”
The SGM grins and replies: “Well, Sir, better one of you dies, than one of ours”

The guy may have only been attached to the ALARNG for training. A LinkedIn profile for a guy by the same name indicates he might be from Iowa.

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/ryan-gericke14/a26/546

This guy’s profile shows him to be a flight student at Rucker since 2010, and a 2LT. May have been recently promoted to 1LT.

@37, a Sergeant Major and a Second Lieutenant were hiking in the mountains when an angry Grizzly Bear suddenly reared up in front of them and roared. The 2LT, frozen in fear, stuttered “S-Sergeant Major, wha-what now?” The SGM, cool as a cucumber, calmly lowered his rucksack from his shoulders, removed a pair of running shoes, and changed into them. The 2LT said “y-you can’t outrun that bear, S-Sergeant Major!” The SGM calmly replied “I know that, Sir, I just have to outrun you!”

CBSenior

High ranking? After I made Senior the only time I would talk to an 02 was to either correct them or have a nice day. What the fuck could they do for me. At that stage in my career I need to converse with Officers that actually had some decision making power. As to the Navy Standard JO’s are 01-04 You do not become a Senior Officer Until Commnander. That is how their ranking goes.

NHSparky

Senior Chief–and lemme guess–the, “Have a nice day” was the PC way of saying, “Fuck off, sir.”

One of the benefits of being a nuke–an officer tells you to do something stupid/wrong you can just pull open the RPM (Reactor Plant Manual) point to chapter and verse and say something along the lines of, “I’m guessing you’re not familiar with this, sir? Might I suggest you take a moment to reconsider your order?”

MAJMike

Regarding shit bird’s age, I was commissioned after OCS at the age of 28. Made CPT after the usual 7 years at age 35. I got a late start.

Retired as an O4 at age 50 with 24 years in. It was a less-than-stellar career, but it was light years ahead of this pervert.

A Proud Infidel

@41, CBSenior, or like my Old School Platoon Sergeant I had when I was a “Joe” in Korea would first say to a Lieutenant each work day, “Here’s your salute for the day, Sir, enjoy!”. He’d also look the same 2LT in the eye whenever he got too full of bright ideas right after taking another swig of coffee and yell, “GODDAMIT, SIR, YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO YOUR DESK, AND I’LL HAVE A PRIVATE BRING YOU THE PAPERWORK WHEN IT’S READY, NOW LEAVE ME ALONE, AND I’LL RUN MY PLATOON THE RIGHT WAY LIKE IT NEEDS TO BE DONE!!”. We loved every minute of having him running the show, he gave a damn!!

Green Thumb

@43.

I hear you.

I commissioned at 29.

Became a 0-1E.

CBSenior

Sparky know the Nuke world fairly decent, it seems like the O’s were either Home Runs of Foul Ball outs. Not many in between. The benefit of being a Senior Chief is I did not have to break out a manual. The JO’s in the ward room originally called me Darth Senior, but that was out of confusion. I was hard on them not to be a jerk, I saw a lot of potential in that group and the XO specifically told me to groom them to be high speed low drag Zero’s. We got lucky and hit a great vein of really good JO’s all at once. Something that we could turn into a machine for the future.
They finally had the light come on one day when Darth Senior showed up, and did not turn them into dust but rather when I Zero’d out a certain LCDR (alone, he was the one that told the Ward room, all they did was laugh at him) who was always a dick to them in the Ward room and informed him that he was fucking in the wrong field and the farmer was seriously fucking pissed off. Oh and Sir, HAVE A NICE DAY.

GT: if it’s the same guy as the link in comment 39, this guy was indeed prior service. According to that link (might have to look at the cached version; the normal linked-in page may be down now) he had significant prior enlisted time (3 yrs 10 mo, IA ARNG).

Given that prior service, the timing works for him to be a 1LT today with a normal TIG. He apparently was commissioned in Aug 2010.

Had he been commissioned out of college at age 22 or 23 (no prior service), at 31 he’d be way older than expected to still be a 1LT, even in the ARNG.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

Piece of crap prevert this guy is!

Plus let me make something clear – off topic.

This high ranking officer would not have received a bit of my valuable time. In the Navy, Chiefs are responsible for the training and proper navigation of junior offices (Ensign through LCDR). I always took this charge seriously, did a fine job at it, while always respecting the commissioned officers. Even after uncomfortable behind closed door counselling sessions, where I needed to remind an officer that the Sailor was right and he was wrong and “BTW SIR, the Sailor has a Masters Degree and he did not want to embarrass you” I would prop the poor little sole up again so the officer had a chance at success.

Then there was the type, no matter how hard you tried they just did not get it.

“I am not your mother, stop your whinning, you are done with me now SIR and you can leave, pull you titty sucker out of your overboard discharge pipe and you are a walking and breathing safety hazardous … You are relieved,” are some of the things I have said to misguided JO’s over the years.

I am pleased to report, most turned out well.

Now the Army 2nd did not fare as well when he thought he could BOSS around a Navy Chief. But that is another off topic story for another day.

CBSenior

@48 Ha, being in the Bees we did a ton of Joint Forces Stuff.
Army 2nd LT’s do not get the Navy Chief thing at all. Had one blowing #1 relief valve because he ordered my Bees to do some BS thing and I inadverdently laugh in his face. He complained up the Chain fairly high “that Navy Chief laughed in my face”. So didn’t the Colonel.
Master Chief in the Navy who are the only people allowed to wear stars on their uniform?

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

Seniors, Masters and Admirals … HA!
