Smelly Hippies in Mad City
Jim sent me a link to this picture that was at Gateway Pundit. We thought it might be a Vets For Peace member because of the sign next to the well-fed corpse;
The article identified the filthy hippie as Hallis Mailen, from Madison, WI who isn’t at all a veteran, so he must’ve been all tuckered out from dragging around those dirty-ass feet, not to mention those unneeded pounds, and just sacked out next to the VFP sign.
But, anyway, in my research on Hallis, I discovered he’s not even a union thug, so I guess he’s protesting just for the sake of protesting. He’s an unemployed holistic healer – who would have thought that someone with Hallis’ hygiene habits would have trouble finding work in which he’d have to put those hands on other people?
Unemployed though he might be, it doesn’t appear that Hallis is missing any meals, but we can’t say the same about showers.

It dawned on me yesterday while watching the clip about the veteran’s memorial being used as a billboard that the woman who “designed memorials” sure as hell wasn’t a member of the teacher’s union, and I don’t recall ever hearing of a union for memorial designers. My guess is that the teacher’s sick days have all run out, and the remaining rabble are the usual professional protestors and students from UW who have nothing better to do with daddy’s tuition cash.
I want to know why these crazy people take off their shoes. Seriously. WHY??

It is my understanding that the WI protests have nothing to do with War, Peace, or Veterans … so what in the hell is VFP doing protesting there? Could there be some socialist agenda on the side that they are supporting? Naaaaaah, couldn’t be, that would be anti-American

Unions are hiring unemployed folks to do the actual protesting.
It’s too expensive to maintain union protesters: union members not working drain union funds, which are better used for exclusive union leadership HQs and resort-style golf courses, and of course political campaign contributions.

Hallis is an amazing, courageous, inspiring man. He is at 30 days of starving himself so veterans like himself aren’t left injured, homeless, and without rights. Anyone who disrespects that is in serious need of a morality check.
With that much stored energy, I doubt Hallis is starving.
Starting a small business and hiring veterans would be more moral than laying on the ground.
I disrespect that, and him, because he is an imbecile.
If he dies, few will care, memory of him will quickly fade, and he’ll be seen as another queer loser who wanted attention for himself first, which is exactly what he is seeking: attention for himself.
There are positive and successful ways to being attention and support to any cause. This is not one of them.
I disrespect that as well. If he were trying to bring attention to the plight of Veterans, or actually DO something about it he could found an organization like Soldiers Angels or Valor-IT, or Wounded Warrior Foundation.
Poor hygiene only reminds me of my Worst days in Iraq (when circumstances forced baby wipe showers or bird baths), and fat asses remind me of all those Iraqis that wouldn’t lift a finger to save their own god damn country. Both of which make me want to take that sign and beat him with it till he gets the F**k out of the WI state capitol.

I have only the greatest sympathy for those who condemn Hallis with such hateful posts clearly revealing more about the degradation of their character and souls than his. Hallis, an honorable activist of Wisconsin Veterans for Peace, is now past 40 days in his hunger strike for YOUR rights, as well as those of American veterans and himself. His struggle shows far more courage and conviction than those who so freely spew venom and enmity without bothering to know him. I wonder if those posting so safely, anonymously would also so freely disrespect other veterans as well. Only shame will come to this nation and the ignorant who dismiss Hallis’ military and now political-service on their behalf.

This post went up on March 1st, and 5 months later his is “past 40 days of a hunger strike”. Is he using the Cindy “muffintop” Sheehan plan, striking one day in every dozen or so? Eating absolutely NOTHING, or only doing Pints of Blue Bell Ice Cream and Starbucks whatevers? Where was it posted that he was on a hunger strike, and , if he was “doing it for us”, wouldn’t we have been made aware of the parameters?
Don’t come around me talking hunger strike unless it is bone, stone, cold “Eat NOTHING”, hunger strike. And, if he is in fact, on a hunger strike; he is a “hunger striking fat, smelly hippie”. I am underwhelmed!
WC–I’m pretty sure he never served. They don’t do heavy drops like him anymore. Come to think of it, they never did. When I was in the Navy they were the “23 for freedom” club, the 23 referring to the percent bodyfat.
I’d say your boy is at least double that, and then some. Last time he broke a sweat was hauling that third plate from the buffet table.

I’ll believed he served when you can tell me branch of service, units, and rank. It’s all on his DD-214, and if he served he will have a copy (and likely copies of copies). If he’s “lost” it, it is very easy to get a replacement. Sometimes even quick to get a replacement. Show me his DD-214, and then and only then will I believe he served.

Yes Hallis Mailen did serve in the US Army…I know, I was stationed with him in Korea 1981-82. He speaks the truth about what he witnessed in Korea when commrades where murdered at the firing range. One was my friend & room mate. I am not saying what he is doing and how he is doing it, is the right but the issues he speaks of are real at least to him. You may not agree with him but I ask you all to try and be understanding to the fact that he served his country and has problems. Pray for him but please do not mock him.

No offense taken. I am providing my name and promoted rank while serving to show you I have nothing to hide. I do not have access to his DD-214 as you are aware of and frankly I have no true issue in this other than feeling like we should not be so quick to slam people in society. I happened to come across this blog when researching the camp we were at and saw comments from him that eventually led me to his fasting & protests and then here.I can tell you he was an E-4 while in Korea with me. ( I do have a 2nd Engineer Battalion Book that has his picture and name in it & I would be willing to scan and send a copy to any where you desire to show you). The fallen comrades he speaks about were Sgt James Elliott, SP4 Ralph Clark, SP4 Richard Martney & PFC David Mathis. They were killed on the firing range on June 5th 1981. Some internet researching will veify this. There was a case study completed around 1991 about how the Army handled the shooting range situation. As for fire fights and such, I am not aware of anything like that occuring but in his mind maybe thats what he recalls. I do want to say, it is sad to think that as a society, we have come to the point that veterans are mocked and ask to prove themselves. It is similar to those that came home from Vietnam. I understand how many people do question with so many frauds being committed in this world. It is however human deciency to just care for & treat your fellow man with respect, whether we believe what they say or not. This probably will still not change your mind and that is your choice. Last issue on the DD-214, you know where Hallis is, if that is what it will take to prove it to you..maybe you could just go ask him.

Do you have photos or anything else that can be used as proof of service. Too many times we have had people come here and pretend to be in the military and turned out to be lies.
Like I mentioned above, I have an annual of the entire 2nd Engineer Battalion for 1981 that has photo of him and his rank and JOB(MOS) Title while there in Korea. As for myself I am in there also and if you want a photo to prove who I am just let me know where to send it( email) and I will if you truly need i. As for a DD-214, I have mine but you know it is not wise to be sending like that to anyone you dont know with all the frauds thereare in the world( sorry, just felt like a little humor there.
Hallis may indeed be who you say he is, however, what he witnessed has nothing to do with union thuggery in Wisconsin, nor does it have anything to do with “past 40 days in his hunger strike for YOUR rights, as well as those of American veterans and himself.”
What “rights” of mine is he starving himself for? There are more organizations that get it done for Veterans rights that don’t resort to hunger strikes or protesting by camping out inside a State Capitol during a union protest.

Old Trooper, I respect your opinion & I can agree with what you have stated. I have not been saying I agree with how he is handling this & that his actions are right or are truly there to voice for others. I am not saying I agree with his stance. I also know we can not appoint ourselves to be the voice of mankind and think its our way or else. I myself, feel there are better ways to get points across but then we are all different and right or wrong, we do what we feel is right in trying to be heard. I am just saying to those that have openly mocked him & questioned his service, that he is who he says he is and I can verify that. It is apparent there are issues he continues to struggle & deal with,as he has stated. We are all in life shaped by what we live through and some handle things better than others. It makes us who we are and I felt that it was important to point out that we should be a society that can address issues without mocking or ridiculing anyone like I have seen in many posts about him, just because we disagree with the approach he uses. Is doing that any better than what he is doing? What is the solution to disagreements, first we need to listen to each other and then work together on making decisions that we can all agree upon. Even then we oftern times find no solution. I however, like to think that everything is workable.I wish everyone the best.
Hallis was a student of mine a couple of years ago. Yes, he was overweight, and he could be a pain in the ass, but he did serve his country and he did experience the traumatic events detailed above. This is Hallis. I got curious and googled my name and found this blog. Yes I am a DISABLED ARMY VETERAN LIVING ON A PENSION FROM ptsd FROM THINGS I WITNESSED WHILE IN SOUTH KOREA. All of you that have never served and are rediculing me or other veterans for standing up for worker’s rights, the rights of the disabled, elderly, underpaid school terachers, etc., should be ashamed of yourself. I have seen this photo taken of me posterd on many right wing republican fascist nazi websites, calling me a union stooge. Do your history and imagine what this country was like with its sweat shops and corporate towns and kids working in mines, before unions pushed for standardized rights. Imagine a life without a min imum wage in this country. I was not a union worker at the time this photo was taken and as for my weight I suffer from thyroidism, so thank you for your further ignorance. You folks, wanna keep cowtowing to the very rich that propagandize you with rumours and lies, then you’ll be at the front of the line when they finally finish diminsihing the working class and the middle class.
