Weekend Open Thread

| December 27, 2024 | 65 Comments

Imagination doesn’t overrule nature. This is one reality that many don’t see when they insist on being something or someone they’re not. We’ve seen this with those who fake or embellish military experience. Many among the transgenders want to believe that they are the “real deal”, producing legal or other documents to back their claims. They follow up this insistence with the expectation that they be treated as the gender they think they are. Unfortunately for these individuals, we won’t overrule common sense to play their fantasy. Enjoy your weekend!

Now, if you will excuse he Hack, he is heading out the door to make one more donation of blood for 2024.

Hack Stone

No place to n your cabinet for Secretary of Keeping It Real?

ChipNASA

Granted, Hack is Director General of Keepin’ It Real!” (Yo…)

KoB

Upon the refresh from my “Post Comment” click, Chimpy, it showed your’s as “14 seconds ago”, CW’s as “14 seconds ago”, The Stoned Hacker’s read “13 seconds ago”, and The Gun Bunny’s read “12 seconds ago”. Your’s and CW’s electrons were kissing one another as they hit the server, literally, nano seconds apart. Was good to see some competition today for the Vaunted TAH, Friday Weekend Open Thread (EARNED…NEVER AWARDED) FIRST Commentor. Maybe I should stop giving my ten (10) count before clicking the “Post Comment” icon thingy. Now…do you have any of those delicacies left over from the Christmas Dinner?

ChipNASA

No leftovers
Fresh Costco pumpkin pie ham, turkey prime, rib, adult beverages, children’s beverages, Dr Pepper, tonic water, and lime, and lemon, and a variety of frozen delicacies, all natural ice cream items. NO “FROZEN DESSERT” CRAP!!

FIRST!

Commissioner Wretched

I tried, I really tried to get in FIRST but Chip beat me to the punch. Darn, and all that sort of rot.
So anyway, one last trivia column for 2024, and who knows what may happen in the future? (Certainly not I … if I did, would I live like this???)

DID YOU KNOW…?
When did the last German military unit surrender during World War II?

I hate ending the old year with an error, but I have to correct myself on the headline item two weeks ago. I had said that Honey West was the first network television series with a female star and her character’s name as the show’s title. It turns out I was wrong by a huge margin.

Honey West aired in 1965. But there was a little situation comedy on CBS called Hazel which began in 1961, and starred the wonderful Shirley Booth. I stand corrected; Honey West may have been second, but Hazel was there first. Thanks to David for catching me on that.

I really loved Hazel, too. How could I have forgotten her?

Happy New Year, my friends! Read on for the week’s nonsense, and I’ll see you in 2025.

Did you know …

… a European nation has a law that requires its citizens to have bunker access? The law in Switzerland says that every citizen must have access to a bunker 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (The Swiss are neutral. They’re not stupid.)

Commissioner Wretched

… when you walk down a steep hill or a flight of steep stairs, the pressure on your knees is equal to three times your body weight? (Considering what I weigh, that explains why my knees hate stairs.)

… a Major League Baseball player once pitched a no-hitter while high on LSD? Dock Ellis (1945-2008) was a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1970 when he took the mound on June 12 against the San Diego Padres. Ellis threw a complete game at the Padres, walking eight and hitting one batter – but no Padre got a hit off of him. The amazing thing is, Ellis had taken a dose of LSD at noon that day while in Los Angeles, thinking it was an off day, and he had to pitch that evening in San Diego. By his own recollection, Ellis only remembered bits and pieces of the masterpiece game. At one point, he said, he believed the ball was telling him what pitch to throw. Ellis never again pitched under the influence, and only confessed the entire thing years after his retirement from baseball. (At least it didn’t inspire other pitchers to try that.)

… that wasabi you get at your favorite Japanese restaurant probably isn’t wasabi? The actual stuff is pretty expensive, so many companies use horseradish instead, putting it into a paste form and coloring it green. Real wasabi is milder than what you normally get with your sushi. (Hot stuff indeed.)

… your love of cat videos goes back a long way? The invention of the kinetograph in 1892 by Thomas Edison (1847-1931) allowed the inventor to capture and record moving images for the first time, and later see them played back. While Edison filmed numerous short clips in his Black Maria studio in New Jersey, one of the most famous – and funniest – was The Boxing Cats. Yes, two cats in a miniature ring, each wearing tiny boxing gloves, mix it up for a few minutes. Edison filmed the cats in 1894 and the modern cat-video phenomenon was born. (I always wondered who started the cat video phenomenon.)

… the last German military unit to surrender in World War II did so four months after the Germany itself gave up? On September 4, 1945, the Svalbard garrison of the Wehrmacht turned itself in. Commanded by Leutnant Wilhelm Dege (1910-1979), the Svalbard garrison was part of Operation Broadsword, a mission to establish meteorological stations on the Svalbard archipelago north of Norway. The 11-man unit set up their weather station in 1944 and remained there, almost completely isolated, until they received radio word of Germany’s surrender on May 7, 1945. The team tried to communicate with Germany for four months afterward, to find out what they should do, but received no response. In August, they switched to another radio band for help, and finally a Norwegian station answered their by-now-frantic SOS messages. A ship was dispatched to rescue the team, which surrendered on September 4. (It does get cold in northern Norway, doesn’t it?)

Hack Stone

Hack Stone saw a few videos on YouTube as to the German “stay behinds”. Would these be the original Weatherman Underground? Not so much a military unit, but following the end of the war, German POWs held in America were being repatriated back to Germany, some under Western occupation, others back to what was then under USSR occupation. Needless to say, not too many were keen on returning to a devastated country under the control of Stalin. Some rioted to try to prevent repatriation, others tried (and some succeeded) at suicide, but one German POW decided to try his luck escaping and living in America. He managed to remain free for quite some time. Here is a Wikipedia page on him:

IIRC the last WWII Japanese Soldier to surrender did so in 1974, it was Hiroo Onoda who was in the Philippines.

Hack Stone

There were a few Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima who were captured/surrendered around 1948 or so. They would come out at night and raid the American garbage dumps for food. Around that time, Chinese ships were on island recovering scrap metal. A patrol of Marines came across the Japanese troops, assumed they were Japanese and gave them a ride to where the Chinese workers were. The Chinese informed the Marine that these guys were not Chinese. Don’t know what happened to the Japanese trooos, but that Marine faced charges assuming that all Asians are Chinese. Last Hack heard, he is still in Leavenworth.

SFC D

In his defense, the military was not yet conducting mandatory training in EO or DEI at the time. He simply didn’t know any better.

Hack Stone

No excuse. Turns out the last troops to surrender held out until January 1949. That’s almost four years of dodging pulling DNCO and contributing to the Imperial Japanese Army Relief Fund.

And don’t forget the dude in the Philippines who held out until 1974 and– being an earnest butter bar– refused to believe the war was over and surrender until someone he knew from his chain of command told him for sure:

Marines assumed the Japanese were Chinese….

Hack Stone Publishing regrets the error, but in his defense he was typing with his left thumb as his right arm was preoccupied with squeezing out a pinto of 100% Deplorable Garbage Blood. Got a free t-shirt out of the deal, and a few granola bars.

30 years ago when Hack Stone was at Electronics Maintenance Company (ELMACO) 1st Maintenance Battalion, we had one certain Marine who was way too short for the weight that he was carrying. Hack a laundry list of insults that would make Don Rickles proud.

The only reason he donated was for the free snacks.

He practiced safe snacks, he always used a condiment.

He’s so fat he qualifies as his own duty station.

He never met a meal he didn’t like.

rgr769

He mis-racialized them. That is serious hate crime according to the Progs.

Army-Air Force Guy

I think I read somewhere that they tracked down his former CO in Japan and brought him to the Philippines, where he read the Emperor’s formal surrender declaration through loudspeakers so Onoda would hear it.

… cosmetics and clothing may have saved the human race? Consider: research has been done into the question of why, if nature prefers well-proportioned bodies and symmetrical faces, all people are not thus beautiful. Or, to put it more clearly, wouldn’t so-called “ugly” people all have been bred out of the population? The answer is no, because humans invented clothing and cosmetics to improve personal appearance. (I never said it was a great study.)

… a man who spent 47 years in government service never accepted any pay for doing so? Herbert C. Hoover (1874-1964), who in addition to being head of the Food Administration and Secretary of Commerce was also the 31st President of the United States, spent a total of 47 years in one service or another to the government, and he donated every single one of his paychecks to charity. Hoover had become independently wealthy before he entered politics, and did not need the money. (Now that’s a nice thing to know, isn’t it?)

Fyrfighter

Kinda sounds like a current President Elect… not the duration, but the donations..

Commissioner Wretched

… German shepherd dogs exist because of an Army officer? An officer in the German army during the 19th Century, Captain Max von Stephanitz (1864-1936), didn’t want to be in the Army – he wanted to be a veterinarian and farmer. But during his service he noticed and admired sheepherding dogs used in the German countryside. One day von Stephanitz decided to breed a specific kind of herding dog and he purchased an estate in Grafath to raise them. In 1899 he attended a dog show and spotted one which caught his fancy, a wolf-like dog named Hektor Linksrhein. He purchased the dog, renamed it Horand von Grafath, and with several investors began breeding a line of herding dogs with Horand’s unique attributes. These descendants, the von Stephanitz line, are the German shepherds of today. (Woof!)

Now … you know!

Mason

Wild to think that a breed as well known as the German Shepherd is only little more than a century old. When Hitler had them as his favorite pet, they were less than 50 years as an established breed.

Hack Stone

Maryanne or Ginger? Hazel or Honey West. The debate continues, decades later.

David

There may be a question between Ginger and MaryAnn (you know I like the brunettes) but if you ever saw Shirley Booth, there was NO contest with Honey West. Or should I say Honey Hush?

FIRST FIFTEENTH

ChipNASA

Jeff LPH 3 63-66, I assign you Director of Naval Fleet Operations, LPH for sure….

jeff LPH 3 63-66

The US post office has to go privately owned
Dec 18th, I mail my maintenance coupons from the East Delray Beach contract post office going up to the bank in Orlando along with my Long Beach Long Island NY FD Exempt Assn. 2025 dues. I tracked both mailings through Priority confirmation and on Dec 23, I get an email that the Exempts got my 2025 check on the 23 of Dec. 5 days to get to new York and the Orlando check/coupons are still floating around Florida, gets up to Orlando distribution then heads over to Ft Myers then back to Orlando and then back to West Palm Beach distribution where it originaly took off from and then back to the Orlando distribution center awaiting to move through the network and get to my final mailing destination. today is the 27th of December. WTF.

Dennis - not chevy

I had to track a mailing for one of my bosses and he was quite upset it had taken a similar route. He was quite adamant I do something about it. After reminding him I am not a USPS employee, I said I would file a complaint once enough time had passed for a complaint to be acceptable to the USPS (funny how the post office made the rule about when a disgruntled customer can make a complaint).

I have long said the minute it becomes legal to send 1st class mail by one of the commercial package services; is the minute the USPS goes out of business.

Hack Stone

And don’t you dare put correspondence without a canceled stamp into someone’s mailbox. You violate all kinds of postal regulations doing that, as they consider your mailbox USPS property. Except when the mailbox is damaged or destroyed, then you get to replace it.

Speaking of mailboxes, where Psul of The Ballsack receiving his past due notices. Hack Stone will need to cruise by Lonesome Pine to see if the rental company got his deadbeat ass out of the residence yet.

ChipNASA

Dennis-
I therefore appoint you as postmaster general since I’ve already assigned Jeff a spot.

A Proud Infidel®™

My finest greetings and Salutations to all as i once again declare myself present and unaccountable while I award myself yet another Honorary First.

((((OVER))))

Epstein’s list is getting closer to being revealed.

ChipNASA

API,
API, you are now The Director of National Security Agency, because I’m sure they help Santa and making his lists and they probably have a list of all the lists so you can list the listing lists of the lists that won’t be missed

A Proud Infidel®™

WELL THEN, let’s start with the complete and total release of ALL of the names on Epstein’s list and we’ll all enjoy some choice schadenfreude as we watch the shit fly from that, and next will be the release of Diddy’s list with more to follow, let’s expose the DC/Hollwierd sewer contents to the absolute maximum!!!

GB,
GB I am appointing you the head of Medicaid and Medicare and Social Security so as to make sure that the rest of the previous administrations don’t fuck it up and maybe you have ideas how to run it right and keep it in perpetuity.
In your maturity and your wisdom, I’m sure you have smarts beyond the rest of us

Graybeard

Having much experience in those fields, I hereby humbly accept your appointment, and vow to do my best to thoroughly DOGE those institutions.

My first act, should I be confirmed in my appointment, shall be to stop Congress critters from utilizing the Social Security fund for their pork barrels.

Safe travels, Fyr.

Odie

I-55 and I-80 are a couple of the more boring routes across this great country of ours. KC to St. Louis needs a 3rd lane desperately as well.
