Our partners at Guardians of the Green Beret share their work with us on this fellow Travis Schwarzer who claimed to have been a Special Forces Sergeant Major when he was ordering coffee, for some reason. He claimed that he was still involved working with Ranger School’s Mountain Phase and at Robin Sage;
But when he was busted he admitted his wrongdoing;
It turns out that he was a Marine with about two years on active duty, exiting the USMC as a Lance Corporal (E-3) not a Sergeant Major (E-9);

I made Command Specialist Major in 3 years, got busted down to Sub Private then finished off as a SPC in the E4 Mafia.
In the cavalry, CSM – not to be confused with Command Sergeant Major – is a lateral/temporary assignment. Most duties revolve around approving sham requests (DD FORM 5HAM).

I wonder how he ended up with that other 11 years of service thats not active duty… is there some reserve time not in there? I know that the Total commitment during that time was 6 years… A combination of active/ reserve and inactive starting from the day you entered.
No idea if it was the same/similar in the Marine Reserve, but in the ANG, it was often fairly easy to early separate after your initial enlistment/commitment/obligation was fulfilled.
Back in the Colonial times when I served, enlistment was 8 years.
1.) Basic + MOS skool
2.) Period of Active Duty or Reserves
3.) Remaining time – if no re-up – in “Individual Ready Reserve” AKA back on the block at Ft. Couch.
