Someone sends us their work on this fellow, James Marvin Moten, who claims that he was Marine Corps veteran.
Actually, the Marine Corps doesn’t remember him, but the Air Forces does;
He was discharged after eight years of honorable service in the Air Force as a staff sergeant, but he did not serve in in the Marine Corps.
He says that he was forced to leave the Air Force because he didn’t pay his bills. He sued Sears for contacting his commander about the debt with them and won a $2 lawsuit against them;

When I went through Air Police School in 1958/59, there was emphasis on weapons and base defense because the NOKO hung our guys from the rafters in their barracks from foot lockers when they overran South Korea. We had reaction teams and I was a BAR man. Security forces was the new name because we did more security than police stuff. During the second Berlin airlift, we were flown into Bitburg AFB to help defend the perimeter.
I suspect the name change was also to distinguish the Air Force folks from being confused with the Military Police because back in the day, at least a sixth grade education was necessary to become an AP.

What Moten was saying was true. Black Service Members were not allowed to serve in Iceland until 1969. According to several newspaper articles I read, ther e were only about 70 stationed there in the 1970-1971 timeframe and that the folks in Iceland may not have cared to have them in their country. Please also read my posts below about Rear Admiral John K. Beling.
What Moten wrote could all possibly be true. Only he can go into detail on this TAH about his time with the Marines or write Jonn explaining his story.
As far as him wearing the USMC T-Shirt or hat or having the USMC blanket draping his chair? Found something very interesting about Moten’s deceased Brother, Bobbie:
SSG/Tech Sgt Bobbie R. Moten was an Air Force Medic and was part of the Medical Team who flew on a C-141, Tail#60177 on 4 March 1973 from Vietnam to Clark AFB with passengers of Vietnam POWs.
Sadly, he died of a heart attack on 13 March, 1973 while either in the PI or his home base station of Travis AFB.
Source? Found his obit in a newspaper (James is listed in the obit) as well as his grave marker and the list of all medic crew members, the dates of evacuation of our POWs, the tail number of the planes carrying them, etc.
His story about being a part-time Marine in Iceland? Very interesting. Perhaps he can show proof with orders attaching him to the Marine Corps at that time.
Were there Marines stationed at Iceland in the 1960s or early 70s…or did he state he went to Okinawa or anywhere else outside of Iceland…or did Iceland have a Self-Defense Force in the 1960s, early 1970s that had troops equivalent to our Marines?

Looks like there was a Marine Corps Security Force on the station (it’s Wikipedia) – I remember the one at Yokosuka had about 500 Marines assigned to it when I was there in the early 90’s:

HMCS(FMF) ret: After reading the references you posted, perhaps Moten, as an Airman, was attached or assigned to that Marine Corps Security Force OR worked and trained with them and the Iceland Self Defense Force during the Vietnam Era in 1971 (all part of NATO).
Black Servicemen were not allowed to be stationed at Iceland until 1969…and in 1971, Rear Admiral John K. Beling was the CO there when American operations were being run by the US Navy.
So, it may be possile that Moten did train and work with the Marine Corps while stationed in Iceland from 1969/1970/1971 during the Vietnam Era. Perhaps a bit of embellishment on his part?

When I was at USNH Subic Bay in the mid-80’s I was assigned to the Provisional Naval Rifle Company (along with about 150 other Sailors assigned to tenant commands on the base) – the leadership was comprised of Marines from the Marine Barracks on the base. I’m sure that there was, and still is, plans at overseas bases for “provisional” teams to be stood up during crisis period.
Maybe it’s me – I don’t go around online or in person calling myself a Marine or “Half Marine” based on my time with the Marine Corps. There are men and women that EARNED that by going through basic and earning their EGA – I’m proud that I served with them and was called Doc…

I know I may sound as if I am defending Maton, but rest assure, I am not, especially if one is claiming service or wearing apperals that is not in compliance with any Military regulation dealing with uniforms, decorations, etc.
Learning alot about Iceland and the Sister Services who served there. Don’t know what MEGA is. Does that group include those who served in Iceland during 1969-1972, possibly the same time period as Moten? I saw that your picture was dated 1978.
If no one in MEGA heard of him, then Moten has alot of explaining to do as to why he may be embellishing or not telling the truth. The FOIA does not lists his Duty stations.
Again, only Moten knows the truth and can clear things up by sending Jonn his official documents verifying his claims. Who knows…he might have shared his records with the Police, i.e. if they really came to his home.

Iceland may or may not have had a surveillance presence that tracked all Soviet sub surface, surface, and air traffic coming in and out of Soviet bases into the Atlantic.
There may or may not have been P3’s, SR 71’s, and some steely eyed missile men roaming about.
There could have been a gaggle of electronic warfare types from all branches of the service and could have been some NATO folks from undisclosed countries there as well.
Navy, Air Force and some Army types along with spooky looking civilians may have visited the Island.
All speculation of course, I was just a Jarhead who was told to walk around with guns.

I don’t hate James as he wrote, yes we have our problems that’s why we have never been close and barely in contact since 1996. I do hate the fact that he claims to be a Marine and never went to boot camp. Correct me if I am wrong but our title can’t be passed down, passed along, bought, traded, granted, court ordered, sued for and even the Pope himself can’t bless you with the title of a Marine. There is only one way to be called a Marine………..YOU EARN IT! Blood, sweat and pain through boot camp. We claim to be the few, the proud, the Marines for a reason. TRUE Marines know what it takes to earn that title and uphold the honor of the title. That is why we hold it so near and dear to our heart. The history of those would paid the price, who fought bravely to make the title of MARINE mean something. As a young Devil Dog I cherished the stories of Vietnam and WWII Marines and Veterans.
