Rick Nolan; phony Reservist in Congress

| November 5, 2016

Rick-Nolan-540x540

Someone sent us their work on this seated Congressman, Rick Nolan in Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District who made the claim in July to a group of veterans that he was a Reservist during the Vietnam War.

Nolan Reservist

The claim was made twice in two different publications and appeared on Nolan’s website without correction even though he’s never made the claim before.

The National Personnel Records Center and the FBI disagree with his claim;

Rick Nolan FIA

Alpha News contacted Nolan’s office about the claim;

Nolan’s press secretary responded to our inquiry stating, “Rep. Rick Nolan was in the United States Army Reserve Officers Training program from the Fall of 1962 until the spring of 1964 while he was a student at St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN.”

The United States Army Reserve Officers Training program is better known by its abbreviation, the ROTC program.

Speaking with an ROTC enrollment officer at St. John’s University, where Nolan attended, the officer explained he did not have records dating that far back. However, the ROTC program is an elective which has courses open to any student who is a freshman or sophomore in college. Anyone willing to make the commitment to serve their country could serve in an official capacity known as simultaneous membership program (SMP) in their junior and senior year.

They wouldn’t have transcripts of his credit courses? College students nationwide should be scared of that revelation.

Being in ROTC isn’t like being in the Reserves. If he had gone to even basic training, the NPRC would have a hit on his active duty service.

Alpha News requested clarification from Nolan’s D.C. office about these findings. The request for clarification was not returned.

Added 11/09/2016; It looks like Nolan won his reelection by just 70 votes.

Anything that comes out of a politicians mouth should rightfully be taken with suspect
Not even surprised anymore

Wireman611

Anything that comes out of a politicians mouth should be treated as something to be picked up with a manure shovel.

You hit it on the head

Anything that comes out of a politicians mouth should be crammed back in there…. with a shovel!

Using my Google-fu I am unsurprised to learn that Rick N0lan is a (D)emoniac.

Thanks, I just read the links and nowhere could I find his party affliction.

Thomas Royston

Affiliation, right? As a fully vested honorably discharged Veteran, (Highly conservative), I couldn’t care less about affiliation. Using affiliation is a cheap way to speak for yourself. You need to be 100% idiot to rely on this type of lack of substance. Stand down and let us grown ups try to fix this mess you’ve gotten us into.

Doug

Go figure.

What a useful and low cost group us Veterans have become. Everyone is itching to saddle up to us, and talk about shared experiences… but no one wants to put in the leg work. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of decent folks I respect immensely who have never served a day in their life… but guys like this… we are a tool. Nothing more. About what I would expect from the crazy liberal loons.

Hondo

To be precise, Wikipedia says Nolan is a member of the “Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party”, which is apparently unique to Minnesota. Wikipedia says that it’s “a social liberal political party in the U.S. state of Minnesota” which “is affiliated with the United States Democratic Party.”

Anyone surprised?

Brent

He is a dem out of Minnesota, and an ass hat. Time for him to be ran out of town

2/17 Ar Cav

It was a misprint. He was with the Preserves during VN. He chose to preserve his ass, to keep away from risk and from danger. Rick Nolan, Preservist. Thanks for your nonservice, Ricky.

2/17 Air Cav

Wonderful. That’s just perfect.

Bobo

I love how all the hippy asshats were anti-war jackoffs when it was cool to be an anti-war jackoff, and are now scrambling for any marginal claim to military service now that veterans are getting some respect. Screw him and his 2 years of ROTC.

rgr769

I doubt he even has two years of ROTC. I can’t believe a small liberal arts college with only 2000 students and not a land grant college had ROTC, unless he was taking ROTC at another school. Also, the fact that the NPRC has no records on him indicates he was never enrolled in the army reserve, which was a requirement at the start of the Junior year of ROTC. I would have to see a transcript before I would ever believe he ever took any ROTC courses. Remember, he has a “(D)” after his name, which indicates he is a consummate liar, in addition to being a professional politician. Also, he regularly hangs out with that corrupt leftard/progtard, Stewart Smalley, who initially won his senate seat with the illegal felon vote.

David

Was not uncommon for many ROTC students to suddenly remember pressing obligations elsewhere about the time they had to actually commit, at least in the early ’70s

M. Thompson

Saint John’s currently runs the ROTC program with it’s sister school (St. Ben’s), and St. Cloud State University. It was originally set up at student request in the 1950’s, IIRC. When he was there, it may have been mandatory.

I’m an alum of St Cloud State.

MustangCryppie

Okay, I admit it. I don’t know shit about the reserves, but how can a reservist NOT be a military veteran as it says in the first story?

rgr769

Taking a couple of semesters of ROTC classes does not make one a military veteran. An ROTC cadet does not perform any active duty military training until he goes to ROTC summer camp in the summer between his junior and senior year. Anyway that is how ROTC worked in the period he is claiming. I completed all four years of ROTC during 1964-1968. I also did a year of Junior ROTC in high school. Until after I went on active duty, I never considered myself as a military veteran. Also, I don’t believe he was ever enrolled in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Unless the SMP program has changed since the 80’s, the definition is incorrect. SMP was/is a program where one could be a drilling Reservist/National Guard and ROTC cadet at the same time. I suspect the article took the quote out of context

Eden

It appears to me that the article was trying to make clear that Nolan did NOT participate in the SMP program because he was taking ROTC courses only as a freshman and sophomore. SMP is for juniors and seniors and DOES constitute service in the Reserves or Guard.

OEF_Veteran

Mustang a Reservist IS a Veteran provided they have served. The issue here is that he is taking the elective ROTC course from SJU and equating it to being a Reservist. It’s not even close to being what he wants us to think it is. It’s apparent that he never served and the documents from NPRC prove this despite his claims.

thebesig

Yes, Reservists could also be considered veterans if they served enough time on a qualifying active duty period. Unfortunately, reserve service alone, without a qualifying active duty period, doesn’t make a prior reservist a veteran.

There’s a movement in Congress; however, to allow Reservists with 20 good years for retirement, who otherwise didn’t qualify for veteran status, to be considered as veterans for benefit purposes.

Hondo

Correct.

And if Nolan never formally signed up and incurred a commitment as a member of Senior ROTC, then technically he was never even a Reservist. He was merely a college student taking elective courses offered by his college.

Bill M

Absolutely correct. In other words, he’s a poser. And a POS.

Evan

Sorry, you’re wrong, if a reservist simply does their one weekend a month for 20 years straight they can retire with benefits, we just don’t collect until we’re 60

A Proud Infidel®™

What-da-fuck yet again, but I’m not surprised. If it was anything like when I took College ROTC in the late eighties, one was NOT committed to service until their third year, thus I think he took the first two years and calls that his “Reserve Service” FA’KHEEM!!!

Hondo

FWIW: the “St John’s” this guy attended is NOT the well-known St John’s University in NYC. This St John’s is a small (<2000 undergrads) private liberal arts college located in Collegeville, MN.

He also didn't graduate from St John's. His BA appears to be from the University of Minnesota.

Wikipedia says he started at St John's, then transferred to UMN and got his BA there - in 1966, when Vietnam was really getting hot. I'm guessing he was NOT a member of ROTC while he was completing his BA at UMN.

I'd also guess he doesn't have a degree from either Maryland or St Cloud State. Wikipedia says he "pursued postgraduate work" at both schools, but doesn't say a damn thing about him having any degree from either university. I'm guessing it would mention his having a degree from either - so he likely just took a few courses at both institutions on a part-time basis.

E-6 type, 1 ea

“so he likely just took a few courses at both institutions on a part-time basis.”

Probably just enough to get him a draft deferment. I’m guessing that’s probably why he was in ROTC his freshman and sophomore years, too. If you were in ROTC, they wouldn’t draft you. If you were in ROTC in your Jr. and Sr. year, you were going to Vietnam.

This cheese-dick joined ROTC the first two years of school to get out of being drafted. Fuck him for trying to use it to political advantage now.

TOM BIELE

I was a student at st johns in 1962. ROTC was a student requirement in place of phy ed. I can,t find Rick Nolan in my year books of 1964 and 1965.. interesting. Excellent Blog John. USAF LT COL, retired, Duluth Mn Noland’s district #8

Silentium Est Aureum

That depends. IN the mid-80’s, unless you were coming from AD, they had just changed over from the, “Two and screw,” to the, “One and run.”

It’s true you didn’t incur an AD obligation until your junior year, but after your freshman year you could be obligated to pay back the cost of scholarship if you dropped out.

Again, if you came in from AD, none of that applied, as your original enlisted contract would come back into play, regardless of how long you were on ROTC scholarship.

So is this guy one of the Congressmen(Congresspersons?) that The Walking Veteran (Thomas Wayne Hudson) is currently schmoozing for handouts?

You know Hudson is currently strolling the Senate hallways in DC looking for handouts so he can have three hots and a cot to live on.

But all I see of Hudson on his Facebook page are pictures of him with young female aides, so I can’t tell if he’s been hitting on men or not.

Claw

Just for clarification, the Facebook page I referenced is “The Walking Veteran”, not Hudson’s personal by name FB page.

For those of you who don’t do Facebook, that “The Walking Veteran” group page is a real hoot. It has a total of 5,003 members and the latest plea on it is for each member to donate one dollar so Hudson can get a room, shower, and a meal tonight.

Pretty damn expensive digs/chow at five grand a night.

And any posts that show him in a less than glowing light are immediately scrubbed.

Imagine that.

To the Voters of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District:

We need to retire Rick Nolan on election day!

He boasts about all he has done to help Veterans since he’s been a Member of Congress, then turns around and lies right to their faces!

The way I see it, only a self-serving hypocrite, could brag about all the respect he has for our Nation’s finest men and women, then lie to them about his own military service.

Our Veterans deserve to be treated with RESPECT and HONESTY! Not used by a lying, scheming politician, in such a manner.

It’s obvious that Nolan’s intention behind his lies, was simply a selfish attempt to further his career in Congress.

Nolan deserves to be run out of Washington DC on a rail, November 8th, for this shameful way he disrespected our Veterans!

Our REAL Veterans were willing to sacrifice their lives for our country! Rick Nolan, you never sacrificed anything, you just cooked up a false story and fed it to our Veterans!

What a harsh slap across the face to all who really did serve their country.

If you have even an ounce of honor in you, Mr. Nolan, you will resign from Congress before Tuesday’s election.

Resign and prove to all of us, in the 8th district, that I am wrong; that you really do have some respect for Minnesota’s Veterans.

Resignation is the ONLY way you for you to prove it!

ex-OS2

Well said.

Unfortunately Rick Nolan will never relinquish the power and free cheese.

rgr769

I would expect him to resign at the same time I will expect his buddy, Stewart Smalley, to resign. Which is never in this universe or the parallel universe in which they mentally reside.

COL Ungus

I did ROTC at the U of MN Twin Cities. We did a joint FTX with the ROTC at St Cloud State. They had St Johns students as cadets as well. We had simultaneous member cadets from other small liberal arts schools such as Macalester and Augsburg. It is quite possible this grease stain was in ROTC through St Johns but if he didn’t complete his MS3 year and go to selection camp, he should not be claiming this. However since he is a liberal and from MN he could strangle a baby and still be elected. What a woeful place that state has become.

OC

COL, there are some of us here in MN that keep fighting the good fight. However we are fighting Hennepin and Ramsey counties along with Duluth. These three cesspools are where the majority of those on the dole reside.

A Proud Infidel®™

Well, MN DID allow a washed up has-been mediocre SNL Comedian to steal one of their Senate seats.

“he said although he is not a military veteran he is proud of being and Army reservist”..how the hell does that work?

It’s clear he was trying to give the impression he served somehow. Typical Dem douchbag.

thebesig

He represents the district that includes my hometown. This is where I placed my first vote, voting in the Presidential/Congressional Election of 1988. I posted this on my Facebook wall as I have many friends and family that live in that district. 😀
