The Greenwich Time did a biography of this fellow, Joseph Fredrick Dominguez, a trainer at the New York Sports Club and they speak glowingly of his time spent in the Marine Corps;
Just the nick name “Gunny” makes you think of someone who spent decades in the Marine Corps molding young Marines into heroes.
But Dominguez, who earned his nickname as a gunnery sergeant in the Corps, doesn’t talk much about his days in Marine Force Recon (Special Forces). He also doesn’t say much about serving as a Marine drill instructor at Paris Island, S.C., or about his service during Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Iraq or in Operation Restoring Hope in Somalia (1992-93) — and post-9/11, in the Enduring Freedom campaign in Iraq and Afghanistan. And he doesn’t talk about the scars — bullet wounds — that document his service.
Now, I didn’t purchase a subscription to that fine periodical, so I don’t know what the rest of the article says, but I’m pretty sure that it doesn’t tell you “Ha-ha, just kidding!” because that’s the only thing that helps them recover from that bio.
See, Joe, here only spent less than two years in the Marine Corps. He left as a Lance Corporal (E-3) as opposed to Gunnery Sergeant (E-7), and oh, by the way, he joined on March 28, 1991, a month after Desert Storm ended and he was UA (unauthorized absence)/AWOL twice for brief periods, and after the second incident, they tossed him to the curb a few weeks later. No Marine Force Recon training, no Desert Storm, no Somalia, no OEF deployments, and no bullet wounds.
Don’t ask me how he got the Good Conduct Medal, I have no idea.

I saw a UFO, once. It was a flying object which I could not identify; hence it was an “unidentified flying object”. I was pretty certain, though, that it was not an alien spacecraft.
I checked this assclown’s record that is posted above: he was assigned to the Marine Corps Security Force unit that guards strategic assets down at the Navy Submarine Base in King’s Bay, GA, so his very brief Marine Corps career consisted of standing a guard post at a Navy submarine base. It looks like he was sent TAD in August 1992 to the School of Infantry at Camp Lejeune for some advanced infantry training, and then decided to go UA/AWOL for the first time. He apparently came back, and then ran again in November 1992. My guess is that the Marine Corps punted him with an administrative discharge based on a pattern of misconduct. Shitbird here wasn’t much use as a Marine security guard at a strategic facility after he lost his security clearance because of misconduct.
No ‘Gunny’ (why does it always have to be Gunny?); no Force Recon (why does it always have to be Force Recon?); no USMC Drill Instructor (why does it always have to be USMC Drill Instructor?); no Somalia; no OEF; no combat; no combat wounds.

As for the Good Conduct Medal being awarded after only two years of service, I remember a sergeant in the United States Army explaining to me, back during the war in old Republic of Viet Nam, that draftees, who only served two years, were generally awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal as a courtesy, even though regulations state the Army Good Conduct Medal is awarded for three years of good and faithful service.
Maybe the United States Marine Corps decided to award their Good Conduct Medal as a courtesy, since they were discharging him earlier than normal?
I was astounded when, in the old Republic of Viet Nam, I was unexpectedly awarded my Army Good Conduct Medal, and proudly wore it on my jungle fatigues for twenty-four hours, as the regulation permitted.
The most famous recipient of the Army Good Conduct Medal would be (I think) the father of Dobie Gillis, who proudly states that, during the “Big One” (i.e., WWII) he was a First Sergeant WITH the Good Conduct Medal.

JRM: Army regs at the time and today provide for first award of the Army GCM for service of more than one year but less than 3 years if the service otherwise meets criteria for GCM award and completes their full term of active duty service. An early release by the government generally counts as “full completion” unless it was for cause (misconduct).
That’s for the 1st award only. Subsequent awards require the full 3 years.
There are other provisions allowing first award of the GCM for medical discharges due to disability for periods of less than 3 years service as well.
Also to add to what Hondo said, Army Reservists or National Guardsmen who are mobilized under Title 10 for a period of active duty during wartime service will also qualify for a GCM after 1 year of service. As with the other exception noted, this only applies to the FIRST GCM, not subsequent ones.
I know about this one personally because when my Guard unit was mobilized for OIF in January of 2004 we were on AD for just under one year (Early January to mid-December.) Of the 65 or so people in my unit (a Headquarters Battery of an FA Brigade) 4 of us did not take a mid tour leave and thus the leave we accrued put us just over the 1 year mark.
Of the four of us, one was an officer (1LT) so of course, not eligible for a GCM. Two others were junior NCO’s who had never served on AD so they were awarded their first GCM.
But the PAC clerk or Unit Administrator failed to read the reg because I was also awarded a GCM (which would have been my 4th since I did a little over 10 years of active duty in the 80’s and 90’s and got 3 GCMs during that time.)
Since I knew the reg well (and since this was my 3rd Reserve Component mobilization) I had to point the error out to them myself at outprocessing and so they had to issue an amended set of orders revoking my GCM.
Yep, when our battalion deployed in 05, we had a spot on 42A (i.e., someone who knows the reg on every single award in the Army so they can get awarded one) and ensured everyone got one.
I didn’t get another one because I was already AGR, but it was good to see everyone else get them if they were eligible.
Martinjmpr: yes, that’s currently the most common case today of what I noted above. The reg reads as follows (AR 600-8-22, para 4-5.c.): “For first award only, upon termination of service on or after 27 June 1950, of less than 3 years but more than 1 year.”
Many enlisted RC soldiers mobilized for a 400-day GWOT tour (365 in-theater plus train-up time) qualified for a 1st GCM under that provision if they didn’t have a previous enlistment in the Regular Army. It was previously generally applicable to AC troops drafted prior to the all-volunteer force or who enlisted for a 2-year enlistment post-Vietnam (believe those enlistments went away in the early 1980s).
Section 11-c of my DD-214 has this: “Para 5-3 AR 635-200 SPN 21L, Phasedown Release Program – Expanded”. I am thinking I might file a DD-215 to get a GCM added?
Might have to apply to the Army BCMR. But if your record was clean, you served >1 year, and you were released early, it might be worth a try.

Couple things. First off, it’s always “Gunny” not “Gunney, so the newspaper screwed that up.
Second the Statement of service form is generated by the NRC, its not anything copied directly from the SRB or DD214, but an interpretation by the clerk who filled out the form. That would explain the Good Conduct Medal. As a rule DD214s in the Awards section will list GCM date commences 880122 for example. That date is the date on which the Marine’s Service STARTS qualifying him for the award. It’s usually the date of their initial enlistment, the date of their last award of the medal or the date of their last disciplinary action (NJP/Art15 or CM). Three years from that date they are eligible to receive their first, or subsequent award of the medal.
DUMBMINGAZZ also was discharged as a L/Cpl with just over 2 years service.
His entries for UA/AWOL were both for less than 24 hours, but Security Forces don’t play around. They tend to launch shitbirds. The only piece of the puzzle I can’t figure out is that if he was a complete fuck up and was getting slammed for the UAs at Art 15, he would have left a Private
