“Rambo” gets 20 years
We wrote about Joseph Hunter three years ago when he was arrested. We’ve been trying to get his FOIA ever since to verify his claims with no luck thus far. Anyway, he was sentenced to twenty years the other day for planning the assassination of a federal agent and an informant according to Reuters;
During a sting operation, Hunter, at Le Roux’s request, assembled a team of former soldiers to provide security to DEA informants posing as Colombian drug traffickers, according to court papers.
Hunter’s mercenary squad used Thailand as its base and performed several tasks in 2013, including assisting a purported 300-kilogram cocaine transaction in the Bahamas, prosecutors said.
For $800,000, Hunter and two ex-soldiers, Dennis Gogel of Germany and former U.S. Army Sergeant Timothy Vamvakias, also agreed to assassinate a DEA agent and an agency source in Liberia, prosecutors said.
I guess they have more evidence that he has organized other contract killings around the world. He talks like he found the Lord during his wait for sentencing;
Hunter…apologized in court, saying he would still be with his family “if I only asked myself what God would have wanted me to do.”
Funny how they always see the Light after they get to prison.

Splash. Ouch.
Here it comes….the old WWJDIHGCIAAA?

Money makes Morality malleable.
MMMM
Oh! I found God over there on the street corner, selling newspapers!
Can I go home now?!?
Any idea what’s taking so long on the FOIA?
My guess is that he wasn’t active duty. News reports state he was stationed in Puerto Rico so I’m willing to bet he was NG. If that’s the case, St. Louis wouldn’t have files and you’d have to go thru the PRNG to get them.
Other reports say he served on active duty for at least a while, beginning in 1983. Records relating to that service would be at NPRC, as it would have been Federal active duty.
I’m guessing that his records were requested/pulled by the prosecution for possible use during the trial, and that that has delayed FOIAs submitted some time ago. May no longer be the case now (or soon).
I’ve read news reports stating he was a drill sergeant at Fort Knox, NY. If that was the case, he may have been assigned to 5/15 CAV or 1/81 Armor.
You know what else gets to see the light after they get to Prison?

For those who aren’t familiar with older computer jokes, that comment is read aloud as
“C colon enter colon pound pound pound.”
Sucks to be him.
The “boys” in the joint are going to call him “Rambutt” instead of “Rambo”…
Does All Points Logistics have a program to hire transitioning Justice Involved individuals?
“Funny how they always see the Light after they get to prison.”
It’s either the light or “the boys” (Bubba, Thor, Julio and Mr. “Tiny”) and they realize that they are just a bytch for the rest of the prison pop.
Hope he likes cockmeat sammiches and tubesteak – with the usual sides of nutbutter and manmayo. 20 years is a long, long time…
He should have asked what god wanted him to do? Really??? Because murdering people seemed okay until he asked god about it…fucking idiot liar. Murder for money is a really bad thing, unless you’re killing them from the comfort of a drone piloting center and the president and your superiors tell you it’s okay to blow up a house full of women and kids to get their father, or uncle or cousin…then murdering for money is just your duty and it’s for the good of the nation so fuck those kids…and those women. Morality is a funny thing, it changes depending on perspective. We burned women and children to death in firestorm after firestorm in Japan 73 years ago, justifying it for a variety of reasons. Bombs routinely kill villagers not involved in fighting a war directly, but we don’t call it murder it’s collateral damage. The innocent are no less dead but we believe we’ve managed to stay righteous…whatever the fuck that means. We so worry about what’s moral, what’s the “right” thing to do…but then we do a lot of immoral things on a daily basis from murder down to a whole lot less devastating but still morally suspect activities. We don’t do laws based on simple morality, we do laws based on keeping society bearable for most of us. So we don’t have random killings on our streets. But we’ve no issue with unleashing amazing levels of violence worldwide for some fairly interesting moral relativism. Killing those who would kill you doesn’t make it right, it just makes sense because survival is what this game of life is all about. Kill before you get killed, eat before you get eaten. This guy took that to another level and will pay the price, but moralizing over it because of some god is fairly humorous. Godly men and ungodly men are all quite capable of killing each other, often with little provocation. Humans attempting to justify it all under some moral code issued by a god who drowned the entire fucking world except one family just makes it even… Read more »
Alas.
The very same thoughts occurred to me as POTUS Mr. OBAMA was comforting survivors in Hiroshima the other day. We even call the missiles fired with POTUS authority “Hellfire,” like some Old Testament justification for killing innocent and guilty with the same round.
Alas.
800k? Thailand? I’d say that this guy was in the big time but wasn’t ready for it.
The guy’s indictment (apparently originally sealed) can be found here:

If I’m reading that correctly, it looks like he may well have been involved in earlier murder-for-hire schemes.
Got most everything I need for a follow-up/2nd-source FOIA request. If anyone can find the tool’s DOB, that would help. Published sources give his POB as Owensboro, KY and indicate he enlisted in the Army in 1983.
Could this be him? Only one Joseph Manuel Hunter found.
From Ancestry:
Name: Joseph Manuel Hunter
Gender: Male
Date of Birth: 9 May 1965
Birth Place: Muhlenberg, Kentucky, USA
Thanks, clams. That DOB is consistent with joining the military in 1983, and Muhlenberg County, KY is only about 40 mi south of Owensboro. I’m guessing that’s very likely him.
oops. was trying to scroll and hit report by accident. sorry
De nada.
FOIA away.
Well, looks like I’ll need the SSN. FOIA came back “not enough info to identify . . . . ” – even though it had all the required info NARA lists as required when SSN is not present (full name, DOB, POB, branch of service, and approx dates of service).
If anyone can find the tool’s SSN, pass it to Jonn and I’ll refile.
Addendum: if someone can unearth a PII-redacted DD214 or other similar document from his records, that also might work – even without the SSN.
He might need to work with “Ranger” Stephen Cio Burrell, The Least Dangerous Man in the World, to brush up on his prison survival tactics.
Which, in “Ranger” Burrell’s case, is just bend over and take it.
Taking it from Rita?
Maybe she owns “Steely Dan IV from Yokohama”. (smile)
(For those who didn’t catch the reference: Google “Steely Dan III from Yokohama.” Be forewarned that many if not most search results will likely be very much NSFW.)
