“Somebody’s Got Some ‘Splainin’ to Do”
Remember that recent shooting in California? You know, the one where a US citizen went abroad; married a foreign national from a nation known for having a high level of terrorist activity; brought their spouse back to the US – and less than 18 months later the two murdered 14 and wounded 20+ in a terrorist attack? The terrorist attack that recently occurred in San Bernardino?
Well, guess what? It turns out that the foreign national involved apparently had a history of making social media posts supporting violent jihad – and saying they wanted to be a part of same. But it also turns out that the foreign national passed three separate background checks during the process of being granted entry into the US.
Yep, you read that right. Apparently no one involved in the visa approval investigation process checked social media to see what the individual in question may have said there in the past. Those social media posts were only recently found by US LE agencies.
Plus, the screening also missed the fact that the foreign national had used a false address on their visa application. Yeah, all of that all really gives me the proverbial “warm and fuzzy” regarding our ability to screen thousands of “Syrian refugees” (and others from countries with known terrorist issues) who might attempt to enter the US in the future. I mean, we did such a “bang-up job” of screening out someone with terrorist inclinations in this case.
But rest assured, we’re “thoroughly vetting” all those thousands of Syrian refugees. None of them will pose a threat – even if they’re using a Syrian passport forged by Da’esh using captured official Syrian passport making equipment and blanks. Or a bogus Syrian passport from another source.
Yeah, right. And I’m the Crown Prince of Siam.
Predictably, the US DHS Secretary, Jeh Johnson, says that the K-1 visa problem is being reviewed. However, regarding the screening process having missed something in this case that should have raised a concern, Johnson said, “. . . I am not prepared to say that and I’m not prepared to make that declaration”.
You see, it turns out DHS doesn’t review social media when making visa decisions in cases similar to this. In fact, there appears to be an ongoing debate within DHS regarding whether it is “appropriate” to do that.
Well, Mr. Secretary – you might not be prepared to say that the process screwed up here, and needs to be changed dramatically – but I certainly am. Your agency screwed up royally here. This all should have been found prior to the individual being granted or denied entry into the US. It should have been considered while making that decision.
In my book, to paraphrase the late Desi Arnaz (in his Rickey Ricardo persona): “Somebody’s got some ‘splainin’ to do”. And that “somebody” would be you, Mr. Secretary. Along with your boss.
You can both explain it to the surviving family of those 14 killed in San Bernardino. And to those recovering after being wounded.

This is bad.
And the world continues to crumble under Obummer and his boys.
Sounds like PV8 Moerk needs to be transferred from the active Army over to DHS.
After all, she does have some super social media searching skills.
well no big surprise here,, so I guess they are going to double down on what doesn’t work and bring 100,000 Isis supporters over here.. let’s not forget we are less then 14 months out and this dufus is out and then another dufus takes over
To be fair, the US is talking about taking in 10K, not 100K, and so far we’ve taken in less than 2K, I believe. Also, the vast majority of these people are fleeing ISIS, not supporting them.
As this story indicates, if ISIS wants to get operatives here, there are countless easier ways than applying to the UN for refugee status, hoping to get accepted, hoping they get the US, hoping to pass the screening, and then waiting the approximately two years it seems to take before being settled in somewhere.
Nobody should go so far as to say there’s zero threat from the refugees, but it doesn’t seem likely that there’s a high threat either.
Tell them to stay in their own country and fight for it.
They are nothing but draft dodgers when those 20-something males come over here as refugees.
We fought for our country, dammit make them fight for theirs.
Surely there are some doing that. But I’m not going to call a little 4-year old girl a ‘draft dodger’. That seems mildly excessive, and kids are roughly 40% of all the refugees.
I haven’t found any statistics on 20-something year old men, with the closest group being the 18-59 year old men, and that’s 22.1% of refugees. And, as I mention below, according to the State Department, of the Syrian refugees already settled here, less than 2% are ‘unattached men’.
Sometimes you have to do what is right over what is easy or perfectly safe. The military embodies that well, but so does helping refugees fleeing from some of the most brutal sorts the world has ever seen.
damn.. I did my homework after you pointed out my number and the source was MSNBC.
I should know better the figure that I keep finding is 50,000 total 10,000 on this first wave the high number being the end of the fourth quarter of 2016 per this administration but it’s not considered a firm number so I’ll stick to your number of 10,000 and play it safe Lol…
I actually wouldn’t be surprised if multiple numbers are floating around out there – the last official number I heard was 10K, but it’s entirely possible that’s just for the next year, with plans for 50K – 100K eventually. (The US apparently takes in something like 70K-80K refugees per year from around the globe.)
Also, just to give a different view on all of this, in 1999 as things were going bad in Kosovo, the US actually airlifted 20,000 mostly Muslim refugees into the US, settling them in as refugees. Here’s a recent article that talks about it if you’re interested:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/11/17/that-time-the-united-states-happily-airlifted-thousands-of-muslim-refugees-out-of-europe/
Another useful website with numbers is the UN one:
http://data.unhcr.org/syrianrefugees/regional.php
These aren’t US-only numbers, but it’s interesting to see that men between the age of 18-59 only make up 22.1% of all refugees. Kids 11 and under are 38.4% of all refugees. And according to US data, single men who are unattached to family (not that that’s perfect, as San Bernardino illustrates) are only 2% of US Syrian refugees.
Again, I won’t say we’re free of risk from bad actors, but the numbers are less biased than politicians on either side, I think.
Yes. And according to official numbers from the Federal government, the US Federal Debt stayed virtually constant from 12 March to 30 October 2015 – after which it began rising again at pre-March 2015 rates.
http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/debt/search?startMonth=01&startDay=01&startYear=2013&endMonth=12&endDay=14&endYear=2015
I wouldn’t necessarily accept that “2%” number as Gospel truth. Particularly from this “most transparent Administration in history.”
Bullshit. 90% of those coming to the West, whether here or Europe, are not Syrian to begin with. 72% are fighting age males with 13% being women and 15% being children. They ain’t fleeing shit. They’re infiltrating.
Where are you getting your numbers from? It’d be good to see a source. I posted the UN data above, and it seems to contradict this.
I have seen data that shows more women and children are staying in refugee camps as the men travel further, but I’d wager that’s often because it isn’t an easy trip. Chances are most of us wouldn’t want to subject our kids or wives to some of the risks, either. In those vast numbers might there be some ‘infiltration’? Sure, but why wrestle with that sort of uncertainty when the bad guys already have other means, more certain means, available to them?

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/eu-of-600000-refugees-only-20-are-syrian-72-men/article/2573083
That’s just two article that quote and link to both the UN and Eurostat.
Why do the bad guys use the refugee route? You haven’t proven there are easier ways, other than our Southern border, for them to infiltrate Europe and the West. Our own vetting is dismal at best (which was proven when no one checked up on Jihadi Jane and her extremist views, fake address in Pakistan, social media posts saying she’s a fucking jihadi. Nope, just come on in). Yet, we’re supposed to just open the doors and let them all in? Only a few will be jihadis? Well, if that doesn’t mean much to you; maybe they can move in with you , your family, and your friends? I’ll take the route of getting our own shit together, when it comes to vetting, before letting any more in.
Ramsi Yousef was admitted in 1991 on a forged Iraqi passport. He asked for and was granted political asylum. On the night of the first attack on the world Trade center, he was on a plane taking him home to Pakistan.
Sadly, the narrative continues to be that no one has any ‘splainin’ to do except legal gun owners.
I’m also sure that we are losing most of our 4th amendment freedoms to the NSA and FBI along with many billions of dollar in black budget monitoring every communication by US citizens to catch these types of posts.
Oh wait…
I need to get with the program and back on message so those black sedans leave my driveway.
How do you rate sedans?
All I get is a couple fat dudes in a spray painted primer black Prius…
I got a obese guy (triple chin canopy), snarfing down a box of Krispy Kremes, watching from a Pinto with a rag as a gas cap!
Aren’t you two “special”…
Hmmm. Round Ranger in a Pinto?
What the Hell happened to the blue Dodge Challenger with the broken front shocks?
His material wealth toys sure have went downhill since he had to start feeding that dependapotamus he hooked up with.
Really? Some old bearded guy with a flat hat in a horse-drawn buggy is sitting across the street from me.
No Shit!? Put the scope on him and see if he has one of those ear thingys in his ear. If he talks into his sleeve, put one into his horse.
No! Not the horse!
There’s also the DHS guy claiming his investigation into the group these two belonged to was shut down for PC reasons. If that’s true, PC and its supporters have blood on their hands.
Sadly, given the historical precedence of this administration, I’d highly doubt if “somebody’s got some ‘splainin’ to do.” Even if they have to explain something, nothing will be done about it.
Honestly did we expect anything else from the same clowns that frisk elderly wheelchair bound white american grandmothers at the airports.
Come on Jonn! How can you expect some GS7 to understand them there squiggly lines that pass for writin’ over in Ragheadland. Sheesh! It’s just the safety of our country and all.
Jonn? (smile)
Whoopsie!
De nada, amigo. (smile)
It’s Hondo.
Good God almighty…. I used to be able (20 years ago and I’m sure it’s better now) do a warrant check on any local or national (NCIC) scumbag and have accurate information back in a minute or less. TWENTY YEARS AGO!
WTF is going on with these fricking idiots that we trust our national safety with????
Right ignore social media after all it’s not like it represents the individual’s own words and might be indicative of their current thought processes with respect to their dislike for certain aspects of other cultures….
Where do we find and somehow manage to retain these fucking idiots in such large quantities?
“Where do we find and somehow manage to retain these fucking idiots in such large quantities?”
You follow a Stolen Valor blog, and ask a question like that?
