This fellow, Joe Kerney, really ticks me off. Scotty sends him to us, but Bulldog worked on it, too. Kerney claims that he spent from 1977-2004 in the Army. He claims that he was Special Forces and Delta, that he’s been every where shots have been fired since Beirut.
Here are his claims in his own handwriting in a failed attempt to correct his records and to get some disability payment that he figured that he could screw the VA out of;
Yeah, well, here’s the truth – he spent three years in the Army from 1977 to 1980 during the Carter years, you know that war-monger Carter who had us in firefights every week in a different country.
He got out of the Army with a Marksmanship Badge. Period. No Silver Star, no airborne, let alone fricken Delta Force, no nuthin’. He was a cannon-cocker who did his time in Germany and got out. Then he figured that he needed some bennies for his three years. Dirt bag.
I don’t usually do this but here you go – a burglary arrest in 1995 for extra dirtbag.

hey guys, I have a huge problem with what I am reading here….I am friends with Loretta Kerney, Joe’s wife, and we are involved in a few PTSD support groups together. I talk to her on the phone and online quite frequently. I hope to God that she was lied to by Joe and is not knowingly asking for help based on his fraudulant claims, because I have been duped and have helped them. Geez, I would never question a friend in need, and she is always so desperate. Please keep me updated as more info arises, because you guys are currently being mother fucked by them on facebook in the group forums. Thanks.
My husband is a combat vet Desert Shield/Desert Storm and his DD-214 is 2 full pages with what he did, where he was, and what commendations, medals, etc were awarded to him. He looked at all of your info here and called BS on all of it like you guys did and told me to sever all ties with the Kerneys. btw, he loved your comments and literally lol’d all of them. He is upset that I allowed myself to be duped by their lies, and I am disappointed in myself for believing their stories since I am usually a good judge of character. If you need any intel on what they are saying, I will screen shot fb posts and messages from them and report them to you. Thank you for uncovering the truth. At least I didn’t lose too much money to them, thank goodness.

The first question you should have asked yourself is:
Why would a supposedly medically or longevity retired Sergeant Major E-9 with 27 to 30 years of service be looking for a handout?
That type of stuff just doesn’t happen.
Great point. A medically retired E-9 with over 20 years of service would not only have a good pension and Tricare, he’d have VA disability in addition due to concurrent receipt. He’d be well provided for, no need to ask for handouts.
In practice, probably true. But not necessarily.
Concurrent receipt requires a VA disability rating of 50% or higher. As I recall, medical retirement can be for a condition that is as little as 30% disabling. Further, there’s no connection between the military’s disability rating (for retirement purposes) and that of the VA (for compensation purposes). The two systems can – and sometimes do – yield substantially different ratings.
It’s probably not all that common, but it is at least theoretically possible for someone to be medically retired w/20 years of service and not entitled to concurrent receipt. And that doesn’t even begin to get into the cases where the ex-spouse was awarded well over 50% of the individual’s retired pay (or a fixed monthly amount) as alimony.
Bennies notwithstanding, any guy who had a career as distinguished as this guy claims is gonna be one squared away, motivated, and, more to the point, VERY employable dude.
Not likely to need a handout at all. At least in my experience.

Right, I should have qualified my statement by saying “most likely” he’d be entitled to concurrent receipt. Nearly always, though, the VA rating is going to be higher than the military rating. It’s probably even a little more predictable under the current integrated disability system, in which the military decides what conditions are unfitting and the VA does the rating. Now, the military rating is just about always the “floor”, with the VA stacking additional service-connected (although not unfitting) conditions on top of it.
Dee, I am sorry you were taken for any amount of money, it is still hard for me to get my mind around this. My wife has stage 4 cancer which is maybe why we didn’t think for a second that he wasn’t what he said he was. Lung cancer and maybe stomach cancer who would not try to help someone suffering like that. You did the right thing, helping a friend in need. Led my sorry ass from panama to the gulf and more in four years – wandered out with multiple combat patches (in an a time when they weren’t expected) thinking what da fuk happened here-and knowing how to drink that lil voice away 😉 . DD214 went to two pages unlike this shit……Never said I tried to do any of it…I was just wrong place, oddly right guy(which surprised me – I was good at FUBAR moments) wrong time, stuck insuring I didn’t let my brothers down.
