UN peacekeepers clash with Syrian rebels on Golan
According to the Associated Press, UN Peacekeepers of the Filipino persuasion were forced out of their encampments by al Qaeda-linked Syrian rebels this morning. This following the capture on Wednesday of 44 Fijan variety peacekeepers.
The Nusra Front also surrounded the nearby Rwihana and Breiqa encampments, where other U.N. peacekeepers were holed up.
The gunbattle began early Saturday at the Rwihana base some 1.5 miles (2.3 kilometers) from Quneitra, where 40 Filipino peacekeepers were surrounded by Nusra fighters who were ordering them to surrender, said Rami Abdurrahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Philippines’ Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin gave a similar account but did not name the armed group.
Abdurrahman, whose information comes from a network of activists throughout Syria, said he was not aware of any fatalities among the 40 Filipino peacekeepers in the Rwihana encampment as sporadic fighting continued throughout the day. A Philippine military spokesman, Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, also said there were no casualties.
The 35 Filipino U.N. peacekeepers at the Breiqa encampment were extracted on Saturday morning, with the assistance of Irish peacekeepers who rushed to the scene, said officials.
I guess the Irish troops are the mission’s quick reaction force (good choice, by the way) and they were able to extract all of the Filipinos without casualties. Of course, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a strongly-worded rebuke of the capture of Fijian peacekeepers, so I’m sure they’ll be released soon.
The peacekeepers are being caught up in the battles between Syrian government troops and the rebels on the Golan Heights, so the UN is being drawn into the regional conflict as a result.

Is the United Nothing good for anything. Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Thank God Ban Ki-moon sent that strongly worded letter. That’ll show em. Worthless fucks.
Strongly worded letter hell! This situation calls for a by-god resolution! And maybe a few more observers for good measure…but I’m not sure. I’ll hug my crystal for awhile and do something with my chakra and will report back.
Make sure you open your third eye, too.
They are good for condemning a country that doesn’t just roll over and take it up the butt when their neighbors launch almost hourly attacks against them.
*sigh* The UN is comprised of whatever nations exist and want to join, many of whom are works in progress (or, pieces of work). When and if the barbarians ever get civilized, we won’t need a UN, any more.
With Irish, “peacekeeping” is more of a notional thing. They keep the peace by hand people their own asses. “Up The Irish”.
Irish peacekeeping consists of a hard stare and your opponent knowing that you’ll happily tear his throat out if he disturbs your pint… I mean your peace. It’s interchangeable.
I’m sure they didn’t mess with the Irish because they know that Irishmen wouldn’t hesitate to tear their faces off and use them for ass paper just for shits and giggles!
“We’ll take the Filipinos and the Fijians, but we don’t want the Irish.”
Very pithy and funny … “Blazing Saddles” best in your face, skin must be tough and real movie ever made!
That is the single greatest line of the movie.
Nah….
“Let me whip this out”
“Oh…. how owedinawy”
“Remember, they are simple people… common folk…salt of the earth – you know, morons”
“What in the wild, wild world of sports is a-goin’ on here?”
“Whew – we almost lost us a four hunnerd dollar handcar?
“Nobody move or the ni**er dies!”
Hell, you can take two hours just quoting the great lines!
Irish, Aussies, Americans, they have something in common, …..
Exactly when do you think Israel gave up the Golan?
The UN serves as a buffer between the Israeli occupied region and the rest of Syria.
“Guess the Irish troops are the mission’s quick reaction force (good choice, by the way) and they were able to extract all of the Filipinos without casualties”.
The Irish speciality units have for hundreds of years been the front line troops of choise for many nations. Continental Army, US, Britain, France, Cananada, Australia to name only a few.
Fighting is in their DNA. In modern day Ireland only the best serve in their DF and it is not uncommon to find Irish Counter-Terror Bubbas training and operating US SPEC OPS, SAS, SBS, GERMAN WAFFEN SEAL TYPES, the POLS, NORWAY’s WINTER WARFARE GODs, CANOOKs and AUSSIE SAS!
