This is a BOLO for the folks of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Folks wrote us about this guy there who has been preying on well-meaning people there trying to get them to open their wallets to him. His name is Clarence M. “Butch” Belangia and he claims that he was a Vietnam Marine veteran with a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and a Medal of Honor. A vigilant veteran discovered that he didn’t appear on any of the lists of Medal of Honor recipients and, of course, the locals attacked the legitimate veteran for being mean to the phony veteran who was making sh1t up.
Anyway, Mr. Belangia continued his malfeasance and even had a GoFundMe page erected for the open-hearted community. The local Travel Lodge gave him accommodations free of charge despite evidence that he is a liar. But his valorous military service has been downgraded to two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart now to fit the lack of proof of the Medal of Honor. Well, here, let me downgrade his service even further;
The National Personnel Records Center has no record of him serving in any of the branches of the military…ever. By the way, his kids even told the community that he hadn’t served, but people were looking for a hero, apparently. Ol’ Butch here is just another stank ass hippie who successfully avoided the Vietnam-era draft and now regrets it. If you people in Kill Devil Hills want to give him money, well, go ahead, but at least do so knowing the facts about Butch. He’s taking you for a ride, and he’s enjoying it.

Oxbgal, no one has to forge anything to get a redacted copy of service records. If you take a look at the instruction and information sheet for an SF-180, you’ll see that paragraph 2.a. states “If the appropriate signature cannot be obtained, only limited types of information can be provided.”
If you want to try to sue for someone filling out a FOIA request for public records, I know a lawyer who’ll take your case, but you’d better get to him before he’s disbarred.

I hate that anyone lies about service to gain anything, but I will never be ashamed for trying to help anyone who needs it. Well said!!! The VA in Virginia said they personally can not find information without a SS# or copy of military records such as a DD214 unless someone has actually applied for benefits. Which to my knowledge he never has. I seen his DD214. He told some of us that he prayed and asked God if he got him out of vietnam he would never asked the government for anything he has remained true to his word. Personally I could careless he is a human who was in need of help that he never asked for. As far as his children they should be ashamed of themselves id never let my parents be in that condition regardless of the past and his ex wife just doesnt wanna be blamed since she left him high and dry!!!!

OK, sockpuppet. A bit of clarification for you here. That’s the Veteran’s Administration talking. Of course they don’t have his records unless HE submits a DD-214 to them, because the VA is NOT the US Government’s source repository of servicemember’s records.
That’s the job of the National Personnel Records Center. Take a look at the letter at the top of this page, it clearly states that Belangia NEVER SERVED IN ANY MILITARY SERVICE. After my father died, I helped my Mom get my Dad’s records for a grave marker.
When the records came back from NPRC — imagine my surprise when the paperwork said that his records were in the fire. And yet they were able to compile his records with a paper trail over of orders etc over an inch thick for just a few years service.
As a Vietnam veteran and a Marine I know what a DD 214 looks like and his sure appears real. I asked to see it, he did not volunteer to show it, was glad to be able to help a homeless man whether a vet or not. He is not the first and God willing he won’t be the last.

As a matter of a fact… We are “Special People”. We see an elderly man with 2 dogs in trouble in our community and we rally. We rally to make sure he is taken care of. We rally to make sure he has food. We rally to make sure his animals are safe. We rally to make sure he has a long term solution to his housing problem.

Everyday I pass by a man holding a sign that says “Homeless Vet Please Help” He has a prosthetic leg.
I offered him work a few weeks ago, nothing hard or strenuous but a decent wage for honest work. He refused. His excuse was he and his girl friend make more money begging than he ever could working.
Yes the records center had a fire, yes some records were destroyed, it was contained to one area of one floor, No records were completely destroyed. That is to mean the record of someone serving was preserved. The cataloging system remained intact and was not damaged.
If you want to help a man then by all means help him. I cannot speak for anyone but myself, but my opinion of the man needing help is that he is a con man, he knows how to play to good peoples emotions and he has said he was a veteran to further tug at the heart strings.
The only answer to a lie is the truth, it may wound your pride and hurt your feeling but the truth is absolute. This man never served, he lied and deceived. Learn a lesson and move forward with a new knowledge.

In an earlier post she says he’s been homeless for two years but tax records show he was a homeowner until last year. If other internet S2 is to believed, he was born in 38, making him an old (by military standards) Marine and probably not a VN draftee.
From what I gather he lost his house to foreclosure in 2013!! His ex wife left in 2012 cleaned out the bank accounts and moved to Florida while he was recovering from heart surgery.

Anytime I hear about someone who enlisted under the age of 17 after WW II, the alarm bells go off. The dates would mean that he enlisted around 1952, and would make him about 29 in 1965 with 13 years of service and about 32 in 1968 with about 16 years of service. I find it hard to believe that he wouldn’t have stuck out one more enlistment to make his 20 and get a retirement check.
