There are several news stories talking about Conan, the military working dog wounded in the raid in Syria that killed terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. It was announced that the dog will be visiting the White House soon.
The Washington Post writes:
After a military dog cornered the Islamic State’s leader in a tunnel in northern Syria on Saturday, U.S. officials repeatedly insisted that his identity remain secret. The dog was slightly wounded when Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed himself with an explosive, they said, and revealing his name before he recovered and returned home could reveal too much about his classified unit in the Army’s Delta Force.
The dog is apparently still in the Middle East, but his identity is no longer an official secret.
Early on Thursday morning, Trump confirmed on Twitter reports that the “talented dog” is named Conan — and said he’s headed to the White House next week.

A legit question/comment. I understand that Military Working Dogs are no longer awarded Medals. Had heard/read that the practice was stopped because it was felt that awarding to Dogs lowered the prestige for humans. I personally have no problem with a Military Working Dog being awarded Medals on the same level as human Warriors. Thoughts? Opinions? YMMV
Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford Nebraska was a former Military Working Dog Post. (among many other missions) It is an excellent facility with a very nice interpretive display of that mission. Well worth a visit or drop by their web site for a preview.
Clicked on the WaPo site to read the article. Went into the comments section too. Read thru about the FIRST 100 comments. They were all bashing Trump and his decision to bring Conan to the WH. Every.single.one! Why am I not surprised?

I added Stubby to the list for Valor Fridays. I’ll have to do a hero animals article at some point soon. The Brits even have a medal specifically for military animals who engage in gallant acts.
I want her to receive all the medals that a human would have gotten for what she did. She earned them.

I’d like to see that whole amount go to a retired Military Working Dogs fund, or a bunch of local animal rescue groups. (NOT the PETAs or ASPCAs types)
SGT Stubby was my hero as a young lad. I FIRST learned of him from my Grandmother that had lost a relative from the effects of gas after WWI. He had told her in the 20s that his troops were warned of the gas attack by “a dog”. Mama gave me a book on Hero animals not long after and the SGT Stubby story was in there. Another one that was featured was the FIRST Seeing Eye Dog, Buddy was the name of that one. Read and re-read that book, it was quite “dog eared”. Had kept it for decades and lost it in divorce #2.

I really have never understood why anyone cares about WH pets. If the President has dogs, then yeah, it’s cool that they live there with them. I always like the pics of First Dogs laying near the president’s feet when some big decision is being made.
But if the pres doesn’t have a dog? Who cares? Remember when Obama made such a big deal about getting a dog? Pure window dressing. I feel bad for dogs that people get but they don’t really want.
Since dogs often adopt the personality of their owner, and vice versa, it’s interesting to consider what kind of dog the President might choose. Since he tends to cut the Democrats not much slack, I’m guessing a Rottweiler would be high on Trump’s short list.
Nancy Pelosi seems more like one of those small ankle-biter breeds having a bad hair day and wearing a sweater in the winter. Adam Schiff? Some skinny and neurotic breed that’s very fast at chasing a tennis ball, but can never be trained to do the second part of fetch by actually returning it.
IMHO the BOTH of them are not unlike Chihuahuas. They’re all bark, little bite, and 100% psychotic/sociopathic!
