Happy New Year to all my fellow veterans. I’m praying for good health and safety in the new year, and I wish the same for you. I appreciate this site and those on it.
Happy New Year! May your 2019 be blessed and happy.
the Army Museum being built on Fort Belvoir, VA.
I’m not sure when it will be complete and open, but I’m hoping all you soldiers will get the chance to visit your museum.

First
Up before the sun on a brand new year. Six mile run is not in the offing, but mixing up the pan cake batter, putting the bacon in the oven, and getting the coffee going will bring the zombies to life in a bit.
Couple dead sol…empty champer bottles and some brass to police up, and by the time the mighty poodle/maltese and I inspect the premises outdoors, all will be fragrant inside with happy kitchen scents.
So Happy New Year, Delta Whiskies and Whisketts. Hope 2019 treats us all kinder than last year. I’ll try to be a better person, a more caring husband to Mrs.AW1, and a good father to my new-to-me daughter that my #1 son dragged into the family, poor thing.
She did cut the heart out of the ten ring when we took her to the range for her first time. She’s a keeper.
*grin*
Sheesh. Already washed down the bacon and eggs with a pair of Sams. Snowing heavy here which means beating on the plow today.
Happy New Year to you and the household.
Smell the java.
High five, buddy, thanks and keep your snow. The secret to real Navy coffee is a fat pinch of salt on top of the grounds prior to brewing. If you’re a coffee fan, try this and you’ll never brew a pot without it again.
Amigo, if you’re salting your coffee every day I don’t wanna hear any guff about blood pressure when I suggest using a packaged jambalaya mix. (smile)
Have a great New Year, everyone!
A pinch of salt for 8-12 cups won’t kill ya, Hondo. It does bring out the natural flavors in the brew.
If it’s gumbo or jambalaya time make it Zatarain’s for me. Andouille sausage and fat shrimp are not optional.
Have a great New Year!
Heh. Guess what came home with me from the grocery just now?
Zatarain’s jambalaya, Andouille sausage and some fat shrimp.
Yuck! Salty coffee sounds disgusting.
Yes, I tried it, and it is not good, to this palette. Some of us just don’t like salt at all. On or in anything.
But, for those who like it – salt away!
If done right you never notice the salt, just the enhanced coffee flavors. Too much of anything isn’t a good idea.
I like salt on chocolote.
Just a dight.
Another trick- put a quarter ounce or so of dark chocolate in your pot of chili. It adds a nice depth of flavor to the chili, and you’ll never taste it outright.
Yes, some chocolate in chili is most excellent. Fair warning, if you partake of chili made here, there will be no salt in it. 😉
Forgot to add, and a very, very slight dusting of cinnamon. Much less than you might suppose.
Good to you seems to differ greatly from what is good here. But, not trying to get you to stop adding it, if that is what you like. I don’t.
Funny thing is that neither the spousal unit nor I liked salt and had to buy some for the table the first time we had overnight guests in our new home. We don’t just not like it, we don’t want it near our food.
Yeah, at this age it is beyond tiresome having people tell me I should try salting things. Will never understand why I should force myself to consume things I know I don’t like because someone else likes them.
And, yes, I have tried salted chocolate. It is terrible, to my taste. Doesn’t mean that people who like it should not eat it that way. Just leave mine alone!
FWIW, AW1Ed, if you have a pot of old coffee (say, been sitting in the pot turned on for 24 hours or so, a dash of Tabasco will fix it right up.
It would possibly help some of the freshly made bargain-basement ground-heavens-knows-when stuff I’ve had to drink in the past.
Try it sometime.
That’s Midwatch coffee, GB. Not taken for flavor, but effect. I can see where a shot of the hot will help. Many is the all-night-burner flight where my most dangerous weapons against Ivan and his submarines were Midwatch coffee and a pack of Marlboros. Caffine and nicotine helped to keep the world free from Soviet domination.
Quit the cigs many years ago, but still enjoy the occasional cigar with my bourbon.
Learned to put a dash of salt in coffee grounds in the 60s in the Navy. Saw a nurse do it and thought she was nuts, but for whatever reason it enhances the taste. The salt isn’t noticeable. Just a dash or pinch.
Potatoes, greens, blackeye peas, cornbread today. Homemade sweet potato pie. Traditional meal in the South and maybe elsewhere.
I consider 5 AM as being too late to start a run. I’m done with my run in the first part of 4 AM (still on Daylight Savings Time). Have to be off the roads before rush hour, which starts pretty early where I live.
I’m usually done with my post 6+ mile run cool down by about a quarter to five. I do take a lot of time to do the cool down walk, my neighborhood is a perfect place to just go walk. Nobody there but me, plenty of time to just think about things. The darkness adds to the comfort.
Love walking around my subdivision about 0300 or so. Don’t know why. Just me and my Maglite, maybe the mutt. Had to stop when tore cartilage in left knee. Had surgery scheduled twice and cancelled well in advance. Thought I could heal it on my own but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Been getting it drained and injected with steroids every few months for a year or so. I miss my 0300 walks. I’m all alone, very peaceful and quiet. Even the smells are different … kind of a musky smell.
After moving back home to help take care of my Dad several years ago, I got weary of having him make a whole pot of coffee just to have one cup. This Christmas, I got him one of those one cup/one serving coffee makers, along with dozens of different coffees. He is loving it. Also makes great hot chocolate and tea.
For the TAH powers that be, who’s on tap for BFTP tomorrow?
Tomorrow’s BFTP entry is supposed to be Soup Line Canteen Cup Shane Kunzeman.
Another excellent choice brought to you by the elite TAH BFTP Team.
Yup, what Claw said, I scheduled it, a couple of weeks ago, to post tomorrow.
Prepare to fire…
FIRE!
Welcome made to 2019, may you be better to us than 2018 was. Health and prosperity to all of the ‘weeds/’weedesses of TAHellcats. Y’all and this site are much loved and appreciated by this Firebase. May we have a very successful year of outing posers and repelling sock puppets.
The Smithfield 12 pounder and cat heads are done to perfection and are as golden as the Bronze Napoleon that the Gallant Young Pelham used to delay an entire division. Hunger will be held at bay until 1300 hrs when the bell will ring for the peas, greens, taters, cornbread, apple pie, and vanilla bean ice cream will be served. Will be delivering plates to the disabled former Combat Medic on one side and the shut-in neighbor across the street. Wish y’all were here.
Back at ya 5th
Told The Russian we would have a better year than 2018, especially as it relates to health matters. Might be hard to do, though, seeing as I know of two surgeries I must have this year.
Hang tough Chief. We’re there with you, and we’re here for you.
Happy New year one and all!
May you all have a happy and successful 2019.
Happy New Year to all!
A bunch of things to do around here and already past time to get started. Getting a late start today because I actually stayed up late, and got interested in a movie. Will pay for that today!
Whatever everyone is doing today and the rest of the year, may 2019 bring peace and prosperity to your household.
Stayed up late. One firecracker went off. Otherwise, very quiet.
Happy New Year, now and into the future.
Happy 2019 New Year and hopefully more puns and yolks will follow.
Shoot me now.
At least he hasn’t laid an egg so far.
Ex-PH2;
If I remember that in the Laurel & Hardy flick- Out West, Stan Laurel said this “Any bird can build a nest but not everybody can lay an egg”. Gee, I hope I didn’t on this one./smile.
Happy New Year, thanks for doing what you do and being who you are.
Happy New Year!!
From suddenly snowy southern AZ.
Happy New Year to all, and many thanks for this site. May it endure for many more years.
Thanks. You guys make it possible for us to keep being here.
New Years fireworks and traditional boiled shrimp kept me up till 2. Dog didn’t care, at 6 it is time to go OUT. Fair enough, wife slept and now she has the most labor intensive meal of the year: cheese fondue.. followed by meat fondue… capped with chocolate fondue for dessert.Start the year with barely controlled chaos.
Happy New Year, my friends! Much more to come in the “Did You Know…?” series, for those who wish to read it. I hope 2019 is everything we want it to be!
I look forward to Did You Know every week.
Thank you, Chief … that means a great deal to me!
Happy New Year to all at TAH! I truly love each and everyone of you and thank you all for the tireless work that you do! You all have literally saved my life and I can’t thank you enough!! Let’s keep outing the posers and defile the sock puppets! I wish you all good health in 2019 and blessings for you all! Let us pray that this will be the year my pos brother gets his! I will never stop trying to put him in prison where he belongs!
Take care all!!
Willy
Willy, hope you are feeling okay.
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year. Spent my morning stalking through the woods with a rifle, pretending that I actually have a chance to use a deer tag.
Gentle breeze from the north, sunny and cool. Hunting into or across the breeze. Had a country squirrel go by 15′ away and not see me, so I guess I was quiet enough. But I think any deer were pushed out by the feral hogs. On the upside, the hogs are still legal after end of deer season.
