Taliban continues attacks during cease-fire
Stars & Stripes reports that the Taliban in Afghanistan is ignoring the cease-fire during the Eid holiday. At least 20 government troops have paid the price with their lives;
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani announced last week that the eight-day truce would begin Tuesday and stretch through the Eid holiday that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The gesture aimed at bringing the Taliban into peace talks halted Afghan, U.S. and coalition offensives against the Taliban, but not against other militants.
However, the Taliban said it would only maintain a holiday cease-fire with Afghan troops for three days of Eid, and that foreign troops remain targets.
Over the weekend, attacks killed scores of Afghan troops, and Tuesday saw no ebb in Taliban violence.
Despite the failure of the cease-fire, Ghani wants to extend it.
The last Afghan administration wanted a peace option with the Taliban – however the Taliban considers negotiations to be a sign of weakness. The only language that the Taliban understands is MOABs stuck right up their aft-orifice.

Fighter Aircraft
Bombers
CAS
Scouts
Armor
Infantry
Support troops
Salt trucks
Start at one end of that shithole and don’t stop until you get to the other. Then keep going through Pakistan.
Considering Islam is a war doctorine masquerading as a religion with deceit as a core tennant this makes perfect sense.

But the US military was declared a target during the crease fire. Does anybody SEA study history ? In Nam it meant resupply of men and munitions. Open troop movements. Also attacking unsuspecting targets. Am I suprised ? Not ! Joe
If you know that they don’t honor anything except bloodshed, because they say so repeatedly, then what is the point of offering a truce at all?

I thought cease fire was what you do after the threat is eliminated. Gotta go back over that part again.

Why are we there?
To try to prevent the Taliban from retaking the country; to try to strengthen the Afghan government (the one we recognize) so that it can hold the country; to leave behind an Afghanistan that won’t harbor groups like al Qaeda, the way the Taliban did; and to try to show that we don’t walk out on allies and leave them to their fate, as we did in Vietnam.
Whether we succeed, we shall see. This story doesn’t make it sound hopeful; neither do the stories at Long War Journal, which is where I normally follow it.
