Boulder bans “rapid spray firing” weapons

Bobo sends a link to the Huffington Post which reports that Boulder, Colorado city council has written their own “scary-looking black rifle ban”. It appears that they had 3rd graders write the language that bans bump-stocks, magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, and “semi-automatic firearms designed with military features to allow rapid spray firing”.
Owners of assault weapons, defined by the ordinance as “semi-automatic firearms designed with military features to allow rapid spray firing,” have until December 31 to relinquish or destroy their guns. But a grandfather clause also allows residents who currently possess an assault weapon to apply for a permit proving prior ownership.
The permit will only be granted to gun owners who pass a background check and are not prohibited by law from owning a gun. The owner must also agree to store the firearm in a safe place and report a loss of the weapon to law enforcement within 48 hours.
Members of law enforcement and military personnel are exempt from the new restrictions.
Councilman Sam Weaver told the Daily Camera that the grandfather clause ? which applies to people who legally obtained assault weapons prior to June 15, 2018 ? was included as an “olive branch” to gun owners.
Opponents of the measure, however, were not assuaged.
Gun owners in the city have vowed to challenge the ordinance in the courts. I want to see the lawyers defend that “spray firing” bullshit. They should add that “full-semi-automatic” shit, too.
“It felt like a no-brainer to propose this,” [Councilwoman Jill Adler] Grano said at the time, according to the Daily Camera. “Each time we have a shooting, it is a reminder of the fact that we are failing miserably at protecting our citizens…
Yes, it is certainly a “no brainer” and the council succeeded in using no brains to write their ordinance. When you write laws for a living, every problem seems to require a new law.

Spray firing means nothing to me about firearms. I do recall there being some spray firing in yesterday’s Kaitlin Marie post.
No more miltary-style spray-painting????
I had a Super-Soaker when I was a kid. Is that what they are talking about?
Like a skunk?
More like an intact male pussycat.
When the shyt hits the fan, these anti gunners are going to be praying for someone with a “spray gun”! But then they will be shyt out of luck….appropriately so! imho
These kinds of laws are about as stupid as cities banning certain knives based on how the blades deploy.
To be fair, everyone I know that owns a stiletto or balisong believes they know how to wield it properly; whether that is the case or not.
[/sarc]
I saw a balisong demonstrated once. I immediately came to the conclusion that there was nothing in human imagination for which a regular folder or fixed-blade would not be more practical. Even in the unlikely event of a knife fight, you would probably get stabbed three or four times by a guy with a regular straight-blade while you’re busy twirling yours for ten seconds to get it ready.
There may well be some role to which a balisong is uniquely suited, but I’m pretty sure that 99.9999999999999% of us would never need it.
How about an ordinance declaring anyone who cuts themselves with a high-speed knife they can’t work is solely at fault?
It is laws like this that frustrate normally law abiding citizens. Exactly what do they expect? What they have done is add one more law/ordinance which clearly shows that their aim is control of the populace. Guns are just the vehicle for exercising that control. This week.
Boulder, Colorado 25 square miles, surrounded by reality.
Funny.
Not a hell of a lot of reality in colorado! that’s why I moved back to Arizona!
I wonder if this applies to spray bottles, garden hose nozzles, shower heads and Fire Dept variable fog nozzles. People do drown in water.
Don’t forget the high capacity strait stream, with multiple stacked tips.
RGR 4-78; Getting into deck GUN/monitor master stream operations can put out over 500 GPM which is a hell of a lot of water. Users should have a permit to operate these master stream devices. Solid bore/strait stream nozzles up to a deuce and a half inch line, no permit required. Lefty loosy, righty tighty.
IFSAC, or the Feds will rain on your parade. 🙂
And airtankers. An S-2T can dump 1200 gallons in two seconds at 250 knots! And a pilot worth his wings can put that load between two fenceposts!
I was interior on a structure fire once when somebody on the other side of the building fired up the master stream. That was a memorably unpleasant experience!
Don’t forget Douche nozzles, those can be deadly, especially if you happen to be drinking from one when it goes off all by itself. Just sayin.
This ban was written by a group of douche nozzles.
Twenty minutes after drinking a six-pack of 3.2 beer?
3.2 wow…circa 1985, I spent 4 months in the “Old Boulder”….that was my “Initiation” to Boulder’s “Solution” to underage-college boozin’/cheap pitchers of beer/Coors available at most every joint in town. Shiiiiit…what is now 33 years ago, Boulder was a cool little town, chock full of outdoorsy types, a HUGE/THE Bicycle Racing Mecca, and a known Liberal playground. Then….a SHIT ton of money came to town and built enough new housing on the previously wide open range that my head spun when I visited less than a decade later. The “small (college) town charm” was not only gone, it was obliterated and the new money immediately set about making Boulder a giant leftard bastion and heaven help you if you even farted a conservative thought. This latest “Gun Ban” is just a ploy to attract more hardcore libs to join their tax base. Gotta keep the locals all frothy and supporting the coffers
of da Dembos in charge and their PAC’s du Jour flush with funds.
Some of my fondest memories are of climbing up to the top of “The Flatirons” which overlook the city, U of C Boulder, and the plains. I met a fox right at the top of the “Second Flatiron”, we both summited the now horizontal ancient seabed at the same time, startling each other, with the fox letting out a loud bark-screach at me and then exiting stage left!
The fools on the town council are shills that thrive on shrill. That’s what they believe will get them reelected and pander to that notion as only fools like they can.
There is a grandfather clause. How will they know if someone’s Automatic Spray Fire weapon was not purchased before enactment of the law? I don’t know about Colorado requirements, but here in Florida, no one but me needs to know what Long Gun I own. For instance, I won an AR-15 in a raffle, and we offered a dealer the fee to have the rifle transferred to me, and were told that they didn’t need to take my money. I only wrote a longhand note that I had taken the rifle from the group that raffled it. No legal entry made.
If the transaction was as described with no paperwork, I would not noise it about. The rafflers could be guilty of a straw purchase.
Re. Boulder, if you have a bump stock or standard mag, they become illegal, as is any MSR not registered as grandfathered. They say they don’t want to take your guns- until they want to take your guns.
I foresee a lot of scary black gun owners filing off the “Spray fire” selection on their selector switches of their semi automatic M-4’s. (SARC)
Maybe there will be a run on Dremel tools at the local Home Depot. They should stock up that item.
Apparently, the law defines “assault weapons” as “semi-automatic rifles with a detachable magazine with a capacity of twenty-one or more rounds”.
So my cheap-ass .22 is out, but the .308 M1 that I’m saving up for is totally legit.
That makes sense.
“rapid spray firing”
Time to turn in those Super Soakers, kids…..
Oh, I guess I should have scrolled down before I posted above! You beat me to it.
Hey! Slow the fuck down with that Windex bottle!
So law-abiding citizens will become criminals because they refuse to comply with an arbitrary demand to surrender their lawfully-owned property. And the antigunners wonder why nobody trusts them.
Well, there’s an awful lot of fully-functional AR-15s in California despite similar laws. Many that had bullet buttons to comply with previous regulations have since been retrofitted with GI mag releases since the last new law went into effect, as a middle finger to Jerry Brown, et al. After all, what’s the point of compliance when the weapon has been unconstitutionally declared illegal anyway? I predict a similar display of Irish Democracy in this case.
You could substitute all of your fingers, and all of your toes, and still not have enough for all the things Jerry Brown deserves a middle finger for…
Indeed.
Brown, Newsom, Harris, De Leon, Villaraigosa, Feinstein, Pelosi…
Is it any wonder that the list of California counties that like the idea of seceding into the 51st state grows by the day?
If Feinstein still carries that .38 wheel gun, she can really spray out the rounds when she rapid fire sprays and PRAYS.
Who said a part of a state that splinters from the whole may remain a state? Screw em. Let them part and they’re on their own. First thing, of course, is the debt owed to the US. We’ll need all of our facilities and personnel back. No school money or any other Federal funding. Phuk ’em. They give us trouble, we invade, take it over and offer the POWs to Mexico.
We could do a hands across America thing and all link our middle fingers together and it wouldn’t be enough of an insult towards that asshole.
While not qualified to say what is constitutional and what is not, I will refuse to obey any stupid new law until it has been found constitutional by the USSC.
Liberal district courts, state courts, and even US Appeals courts don’t count. Unless the find for me. that is.
My GF’s a sprayer, better turn her in before she goes off again 😉
As a youngster, I didn’t believe that was a real thing until I hooked up with such a lass, I was about 20-21 at the time. Funny story about that, albeit NSFW.
Video or ban!
“Listen up people. Quiet! Okay. Let’s get started. You have been selected to range fire the most advanced rifle enhancement available anywhere, the Boulder Special. Demonstrator please.”
“Notice that with a counterclockwise twist, the flash suppressor detaches. Do it.”
“Put the flash suppressor down and pick up what looks like a nozzle. It looks like a nozzle because it is a nozzle. On command, place the nozzle where the flash suppressor was, seat it squarely, and twist it onclockwise. Demonstrator please.”
“Affix nozzels! Now, let’s go spray!”
I am convinced that someone confused the word muzzle and nozzle.
“So, who wants to write this up?”
“I will!”
“Are you familiar with rifles?”
“Sure. Basically, esch has a stock, a trigger, a barrel, and a nozzle!”
“Sounds good. Write it up.”
Being stupid is one thing, documenting it is another thing entirely.
Sam Weaver gave an “olive branch” to those who already own the spray fire bad thingies?
Really? An olive branch? As opposed to what… you might instead take the ones already owned?
Fuck You Sam!
And the “olive branch” is that current owners may *apply* for a permit to keep their legal property. Yep, fuck you, Sam Weaver! MOLON LABE, asshole!
Sadly, these ideas didn’t start in the minds of the 3rd graders. They more than likely started in the brainwashing adults occupying the classrooms everyday.
This is one of those silly-ass PC BS things. About a decade (or so) ago, Olympia, Washington declared itself a nuclear free city. Well they don’t have a nuclear power plant there so that was easy to appear to declare “mission accomplished”, it had been years since the city’s attack boat namesake had visited (USS Olympia, after getting a tour of that thing, I have always realized that a tank is spacious).
However, and I may be simply being an asshole here; there are still operating X-Ray machines, Doctors use radiopharmaceuticals, and I imagine when the city public works department builds a road, they still use density gauges…all of the above contain radioactive materials…and to top it off the hospitals there STILL have active nuclear medicine departments.
This crap about automatic spray weapons is just a bunch of crap. Now Im going to go out an invent such a weapon, just so the snowflakes can have a true meltdown…hmmmm where did my 10 gauge garden nozzle go, if I tack a modified nerf gun magazine that fires plant food sticks…
Damn, I turn 59 and get all curmudgeonly…
I, too, toured the Olympia! If I remember correctly, it was in 2012 in Subic Bay where it was moored just forward of the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6). You ain’t kidding – that thing was cramped, although I found it interesting it was 3 levels (plus the conning tower). I figured something that tightly packed should not be (relatively) big enough to have that many decks to it. I got a look through the periscope and the crew told me that new boats didn’t even have a traditional one. The new periscopes are basically a high tech camera on a stick (like a GBOSS to us ground folks). I get the benefit to having it on a monitor, but come on, man! You’re supposed to have a periscope on a damn submarine!!
FuzeVT,
No kidding that thing was cramped! Leads to the question; are there fat, I mean ummm weight challenged submariners?
WHAT subs with no periscopes???? That’s just wrong. How the hell do you get to turn your hat backwards to look badass if you see what the “scope” sees on a monitor???
“How the hell do you get to turn your hat backwards to look badass if you see what the “scope” sees on a monitor???”
I know! That’s what I said!!

Maybe the Boulder CO City Council needs to go ban themselves for spraying stupid like they did?
This is what happens when stupid people breed.
Next up: banning dihydrogen monoxide.
“Next up: banning dihydrogen monoxide.”
Which in fact results in more dead kids per week than a year’s worth of firearms-related incidents.
HEY NOW,
Dihydrogen Monoxide is a major ingredient in EVERY agricultural pesticide and herbicide.
Dihydrogen Monoxide is found in EVERY polluted waterway worldwide.
Dihydrogen Monoxide has been found in every cancer tumor ever found.
Dihydrogen Monoxide causes death when accumulated in the lungs.
Dihydrogen monoxide is added to bleaches and detergents AS WELL AS children’s drinks, sound unhealthy enough?
Dihydrogen Monoxide is used as a fire extinguishing medium.
Dihydrogen monoxide corrodes iron yet some Doctors insist we drink it!
Let’s send that to the Blunderheads of the Boulder City Council and see how quickly they screech to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide!
Dihydrogen monoxide can be useful, particularly if frozen into small cubes and floated in a glass of scotch.
Yes, Dihydrogen Monoxide is not only used to cool alcoholic beverages, but to DILUTE THEM as well! Did you know it’s illegal in most States for Bartenders to add Dihydrogen Monoxide to the liquor bottles on their shelves as well?
I like to add a touch to my Glenfiddich.
Dihydrogen Monoxide is some bad shit!!! The Columbia River is just full of it and its screaming by us right now at 146,768,249 gallons per minute as of 0615 PDT. That’s like extinction event levels…
We should see if the Boulder City Council will waste some more taxpayer time on BS ordinances…
It is WAY past time they were all neutered and spayed.
Arrest that guy you see on TV selling that garden hose with the nozzle that coils up and you can carry it concealed in your pocket.
It’s a collapsible stock assault nozzle! It has that thingy in the back that goes up!
“Dear Lord, please have mercy on the souls of of the Boulder City Council, they are idiots and know not what they do.
You have given all of your children the tools to be rational, fair & thinking individuals, but alas, some of them have chosen the path of fools & ignorance.
Please bestow some wisdom on these ignorant, foolish individuals so that they may see the light…….. and if that doesn’t work, a salvo of lightning from the heavens above may change their views & others like them (Of course, let that salvo be 10 bolts or less in semi-auto mode).
Lettuce spray…….
Ahmen.
I always wanted to give an award in the form of a “laurel and hardy handshake.”
Colorado Preemption Law
Universal Citation: CO Rev Stat § 29-11.7-103 (2016)
A local government may not enact an ordinance, regulation, or other law that prohibits the sale, purchase, or possession of a firearm that a person may lawfully sell, purchase, or possess under state or federal law. Any such ordinance, regulation, or other law enacted by a local government prior to March 18, 2003, is void and unenforceable.
The city council knows this will be overturned.
Just more virtue signaling which will cost the citizens their taxes to pay legal fees.
Florida, I believe, got tired of such local Preemption abuse nonsense and added some personal pecuniarily liable sanctions to governmental individuals found guilty by lawsuit. This should be the national model. The “betters” don’t seem to care much for paying for such frivolity out of their own pockets as opposed to using taxpayer’s money. And, the liberal migrant Californian has been, and continues to be, a plague on our country. regards, Alemaster
A ban on “rapid spray firing weapons”, so now they need to get rid of WD40, lighters and starting fluid in Boulder CO. Wasp Spray? DITTO, it’s a weapon used against those insects and it sprays!
I wonder if one of our guys here moved to Boulder and helped them draft this legislation…it sounds vaguely familiar…..
“lower leg above the knee”
Wasn’t there some rock climbing dumbass that used to spray and pray here with drive by trolling’s? Maybe he is on the city council of Boulder?
I miss him as much as I do my last toothache.
“apply for a permit proving prior ownership.”
Yeah – gun registration by any other name is still fascist.
Boulder may simply be making the city as unfriendly to people like us as possible, in hopes that as many as possible will -leave-.
The city thus becomes more solidly democrat. The cities effectively control the state, so even better. Once control is effectively democrat-total, the rubes outside the city an be brought to heel with more “sensible” laws.
I live in Boulder County. Boulder is solidly communist. I just purchased a AR 15 with a 30 round magazine. The guy at the store said the Sheriff knows these laws cannot be enforced. The police chief already stated there is no way they can enforce the new law. Boulder is beyond hope.
I thought Colorado passed a law making 30 round magazines illegal. That ostensibly is why Magpul moved their operation out of Colorado.
They are and most people don’t care. The law is unenforceable and most of the county sheriffs said they will not enforce this law. Two state legislators were recalled because of the law. The chain stores will not sell them but every mom and pop I have been to sell them. I bought four more recently. If they really wanted to push the law Wyoming is a half hour away from my house. That is where Magpul moved to.
If memory serves, wasn’t The Soviet of Boulder the first city in Colorado to legalize Pot? And years before the whole state did the same?
Perhaps Legalize is the wrong word, maybe Decriminalize would work better. Whatever, I still think it was in the vanguard of the Pot silliness.
Back when I was young, Boulder was cool as hell. Live and let live was the motto. Down the street where I worked was Soldier of Fortune magazine. All the posers hung out with their FN rifles waiting to be airlifted to Rhodesia. There was a definite anti authority vibe. But as the hippies got older, they felt it was necessary to become the authorities they despised. Now the average home price is over a million dollars and the only minorities are on the college football team and the lawn care dudes. Boulder should fence itself off and become the gated community it so wants to be.
Bisbee has no college and no lawns- the ethnicity elements are there. Town council is fucked up and there are a lotta old semi- capitalized “hippies”. Jus’ sayin’- chemically adjusted shitbrains are not restricted to Boulder.
Tombstone, the town too tough to die. Bisbee, the town too stupid to die.
Didn’t say that at all. There are many places just like it. Berkley, Madison and Portland. Likely many other places. Arizona with the influx from California is not far behind.
What I was trying to imply is the mind your own business aspect that was common in Colorado is dead.
Hiya Charles, read my post (a reply) above. I lived in /loved yhe Boulder of old….
“Rapid spray firing” ??
The only weapon I can think of that would fit that bill would be an M-60. Or any other machine gun and it’s team.
This is what we get when we allow morons into public office.
Super Soaker.
Ban the Super Soaker. At close range one might lose and eye.
Is that the real City of Boulder emblem??
Hmmmm.
Looks kinda “sprayed” on, don’t it?
I do not own any “fast spraying fire semi-automatic rifles. All of my rifles are trained for aimed fire only. Some of my rifles hold more rounds than others. Joe
Yes. Real riflemen don’t do spray n pray. It is not a proper use of the weapon or its ammo.
Banning guns is stupid. Why don’t they make shooting random people illegal, and start punishing those who do??
Lol
