Dick’s cut off

| May 12, 2018

According to KUTV, Dick’s Sporting Goods is being treated as a pariah in the gun industry with gun manufacturers, Mossberg, Springfield Armory and MKS Supply refusing to deliver their wares to the retailer.

“It has come to our attention that Dick’s Sporting Goods recently hired lobbyists on Capitol Hill to promote additional gun control,” said Iver Mossberg, Chief Executive Officer of the gun company.

“Make no mistake, Mossberg is a staunch supporter of the U.S. Constitution and our Second Amendment rights, and we fully disagree with Dick’s Sporting Goods’ recent anti-Second Amendment actions,” Iver Mossberg concluded.

[…]

MKS Supply said it “values the customers that it proudly serves and the God-given freedoms that they enjoy,” and that it believes it is “equally important to show our commitment to our customers by standing behind their Second Amendment rights.”

[…]

Springfield continued:

It is clear where Dick’s Sporting Goods and its subsidiary, Field & Stream, stand on the Second Amendment, and we want to be clear about our message in response. Their position runs counter to what we stand for as a company. At Springfield Armory, we believe in the rights and principles fought for and secured by American patriots and our founding forefathers, without question. We will not accept Dick’s Sporting Goods’ continued attempts to deny Second Amendment freedoms to our fellow Americans.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) says that they will discontinue Dick’s membership.

DICK’S has DORKED THE SQUEAKHOLE!

ArmyATC

Shop Cabela’s. Because they aren’t dicks.

HMCS(FMF) ret

Amen! Been to both Cabella’s and Bass Pro Shops. Also, there is a Sportsmen’s Warehouse near my AO that is nice.

Heart of TEXAS (PSG, Ret.)

Maybe you aren’t aware that after Bass Pro bought out Cabelas, they discontinued all military discounts for anything firearms related. Now I buy whatever I need from my local LGS.

QMC

They recently opened an Academy Sports in town. Nice to solidify that alternative now.

J.R. Johnson

Don’t ask for advice from Academy’s sales folks though. When I built my first .308, I asked one the difference between .308 and 7.62, he said it was like 5.65 and .223…if your rifle is 7.62 you can fire either, but a .308 can only fire .308. Glad I got my barrel in .308, and I checked before putting anything in it…they are not experts.

Law of Unintended Consequences…hmmm, yes, I definitely remember reading about that somewhere.

Dick’s really turned out to be a DICK.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

BZ Springfield on your move. One more thing is that maybe you could move your Croatia factory back to the States.

FatCircles0311

It was never made in the states to bring back. They licensed the HS2000 design almost 2 decades ago from a company in Croatia, so I’m unsure whether or not they could actually produce it anywhere else. With all of the changes and different models they have implemented since then it’s unknown whether or not they could bring those models to a different factory. I would hate to see them burn bridges to bring gun business to an anti gun state like Illinois only to get shut down. I love my XD Mod 2 though.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

I now carry the new XDE .09. The XDSC .40 I tried carrying was a little too bulky for me. I like the single stack .09. I thought that Springfield at one time manufactured their wares in the states.

19D3OR4-Smitty

Their 1911s and rifles are made in Illinois. Their XDs are made in Croatia by the armament company Springfield bought out who designed it.

Also not to be confused with the Government Springfield Armory that was in Massachusetts.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Thanks for the info on Springfield FatCircles and 19Delta. I was confused
on the Croatia deal and you straightened it out for me. I should have googled it so I wouldn’t sound like a Myrtle Avenue Dummy on my above comments.

jonp

Good job. Most don’t know the origins of the pistols Springfield is selling now.

Ex-PH2

As much as I love a good pun (especially with butter and lots of jam), you could post a spew alert, fella!

Since Field & Stream used to be a magazine that I occasionally bought, and is related to HUNTING CRITTERS LIKE DEER, WHICH MEANS GUNNZZZZZ!, how is this going to affect them? At all?

Just curious, because dissociating yourself from sportsmen like that is a stupid thing to do.

LLBean doesn’t sell guns, they sell outdoor clothing and gear, and duck boots. I don’t know whether or not they ever did sell guns by mail.

I know that Sears did, once upon a time, but Sears is nearly gone, anyway because it didn’t ‘get’ the idea that has made Amazon so successful.

So Dick’s cut their noses off to spite themselves, or something like that. (Yawn.)

I need pancakes or French toast this morning.

UpNorth

Field and Stream magazine released a statement pointing out out that they are totally separate from Dick’s and the Field & Stream stores. Though why they didn’t go after the store chain for using their established name I haven’t figured out yet.

2/17 Air Cav

Here you go, UpNorth. Consider it a very late or very early Christmas present:

https://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-2nd-circuit/1372486.html

UpNorth

Thanks, 2/17. If I start reading that, in depth, tomorrow, I may finish it by Christmas.
Typical legalese, what can be said in 20 words takes 200 pages.

David

Another consideration is shared market and possible confusion on the part of the consumers. Sell a homonym Guccci handbag, you’ll get hammered. I suspect a Goochy pancake would be ignored.

LiRight

I’m 70 years old and can remember Field & Stream magazine coming to my father monthly in the mail. I would read and browse every single page as a kid. I’m sure that magazine was partly responsible (along with my great dad) in developing my interests in hunting and firearms (and a good bourbon!) in general.

I have a Dicks about 5 miles from me in Garden City, LI and have never even walked through their door…nor will I.

rgr769

I bought an athletic T-shirt at one several years ago. Won’t happen again, ever.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Garden City; When I resided in N. Valley Stream, East Rockaway and Long Beach, I had to renew my target handgun permits at Police HQ’S. I wonder if the PO who checked my handguns after he was assigned there after being investigated for blowing up a detectives car with the detective inside because the motive was thought that he was bopping the PO’S estranged wife. PO was a demo expert in the service and they could not come up with any evidense even after checking his upstate NY cabin for any bomb making components. Forgot his name.

LiRight

NCPD,1490 Franklin Ave Mineola NY. I knew it well after drawing a paycheck from them for a couple of decades.

When did that incident you refer to above occur?

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

LiRight; That was Bob horran who was originaly in ESU and used to do a lot of work/teach with the vollies on vehicle extrications. the incident took place back in the 1980’S while he lived out in Suffolk County. He now lives up in Coopers Town. When I read your comment, I just called my friend up in Long Beach to get the skinny since he is like 12 years younger than me with a good memory. Ask some of your friends who were on the job at the time.

LiRight

Thanks for the reply, Jeff.

I was in the 2nd Pct at the time and the name Horan is familiar – the incident is not.

I’ll check around today with a couple of guys that worked in HQ’s and will try to answer here asap.

The Stranger

I think I read somewhere that the magazine and stores do not share common ownershio.

Graybeard

I suspect the magazine has a case against Dick’s – don’t know why the let that slide so long.

26Limabeans

Go with the French toast, link sausage and maple syrup. Extra butter pats floating in the syrup. Extra piece of bread to sop up the tailings. And a big glass of cold milk.

Ex-PH2

Yes! After the thunderbumper this morning, and the cold air that came with it (dropped 5F in 15 minutes) I need sustenance!

NHSparky

5 degrees in 15 minutes?

Oh, how you must suffer.

jonp

One word to the wise on Sears. Although they don’t sell firearms anymore if you see one at a mall they will not have a “no firearms allowed” sign. This is a way to enter the mall without worrying about the signs.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

EX; I have 2 Sears & Robuck catalogue reprints from the late 1890’2 and 1910. Loaded with firearms. Can’t find them. They me be in my upstairs cage store room. The Colt .25 pocket pistol that my late friend’s Daughter gave me went for five bucks at the time. I wonder what happened to the nickel candy bar and twenty five cent malted I used to get at the corner candy store with the four kids outside doing street corner harmony.

A Proud Infidel®™

Well look at that, Dick’s is being told to eat a bag of dicks for being a bunch of DICKS when it comes to a decent stance on the 2nd Amendment. Dick’s even hired anti-gun lobbyists as well and I wonder who will be next to tell Dick’s to eat a bag of dicks?

NDHoosier

Maybe everyone’s favorite Navy pilot could skywrite a dick over Dick’s corporate headquarters in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania?

The Stranger

I don’t know if he’s available. Last I heard, he was flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong.

Martinjmpr

It saddens me greatly to hear that the once thriving rubber dogshit industry in the US has all but disappeared and its place in the market taken over by Hong Kong based rubber dogshit manufacturers.

I, for one, will only buy AMERICAN MADE rubber dogshit.

Hondo

A “Top Gun” reference? Oh, the Navy crowd here isn’t gonna like that!

(smile)

2/17 Air Cav

Most of the crowd being placated by Dick’s never set foot in one of their stores. I’m sure that D. “Pencil Neck” Hogg, for instance, being the obvious sportsman that he is, regularly buys sporting gear at Dicks. As a matter of fact, I think I saw him at Dick’s about a year ago. I remember because I overheard the salesman chuckle, then cough, and say to him, “No, that’s not some sort of air mask. It’s called a cup.”

Usafvet509

No, no, he knew that. He likes using them as air masks. The dirtier, the better

26Limabeans

I get the feeling that investors in Dick’s will react similar to investors in Target.

AW1Ed

After they lose the firearms business, all Dick’s will have to offer is second rate, overpriced sporting goods. Better, cheaper gear can be found at specialty stores or on-line.

2/17 Air Cav

I don’t think their stuff is second rate but I agree that their prices are insane. They use the MSRP! Who does that? Dicks and…and…and I’ll get back to you on that.

David

Gander Mountain used MSRP…as their starting point for markUPS.

AW1Ed

After consideration, you’re probably right, 2/17. The whole two times I’ve darkened their door was for ammo, not Nike or Under Armor.
Doesn’t much matter as I won’t be back.

The Other Whitey

Yet another reason why I stick with Cabelas and Basspro.

Ex-PH2

Ditto.

Graybeard

Jon The Mechanic

I remember when Dick’s was a single store located on Main Street in Vestal NY, right next to the fire station. My mother bought my school jacket there, along with cleats for soccer.

According to Google maps, that location is now empty, and except for the impact on the employees of the company, that sounds like a good description of my wishes for every location in the entire chain.

26Limabeans

There is a Dick’s at the barren Bangor Mall in Bangor Maine. How many hunters and shooters do you think there are in Bangor Maine?
I expect the store to become a video arcade.

NHSparky

Cause it’s like Kittery Trading Post.

It caters to idiot flatlander tourists.

PFM

Go down the street to the new model Dick’s at the Town Square mall to see the change – went from being a pretty good little hunting/fishing shop to a huge venue made to push overpriced crap – they call that Progress, btw.

WAR STORY ALERT: A few years back I was doing a CG Auxiliary boating safety promo at a Bass Masters expo in PA. Dicks had a large exhibit and I actually met this Dick guy and was not impressed. However, thereafter, no one could say “I didn’t know Dick”.

ArmyATC

True. But they can still say you don’t know Jack.

JACK SHIT

Club Manager, USA ret. knows me, so do nearly all the rest of the TAH Regulars.

Deplorable B Woodman

Hondo

Jack: my condolences on the loss a while back of your distant cousin “Fulla”.

OWB

Dick’s is free to lobby for or against whatever they can justify to their stockholders that they should. None of my business. Of course, their suppliers have the same right, as do all the former customers.

Seems like the boycott against Dick’s began a while ago, after the last time they stepped in it. Or maybe it was the episode before that one.

Yef

Words of wisdom.
Totally agree.

Steve1371

Lots of good and customer friendly places to do business like Cheaper than Dirt, Midway USA, MidSouth Shooters supply as well as your local firearm dealer and hardware store. I just bought a buck grunt tube for my grandsons birthday at the local hardware store and was surprised at what they had in stock.

A Proud Infidel®™

I know what you mean about Cheaper than Dirt, they ALWAYS jack their prices after something happens which is why I always go to Sportsman’s Guide first.

jonp

Me too. I used to buy a great deal of stuff there but have not shopped on that site since.
Here in NC a company called Blue Collar Reloading hits all the gunshows. When everyone was jacking up prices during the ammo and powder scare they held the line. I go to every gunshow now and buy at least a couple of pounds of powder from them as a way to say thank you.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

My friend and I used to order bulk ammo from cheaper than dirt and ironicaly had it delivered to the school district shop where he had his office. His boss at the time wanted to use one of the rooms for his reloading equipment. Didn’t happen and when UPS jacked up it’s prices, we went to other sources for bulk ammo.

Steve1371

Any order of $50.00 or more ships free. Check them out. You may be surprised at what I believe are great deals on quality ammo. C T D , i mean.

NHSparky

Dick’s is just a reminder of why I shop my local gun and ammo store.

I made the mistake of checking out Kittery Trading Post once. ONCE.

Same deal there too.

jonp

I have not set foot in Dicks since their virtue signalling fiasco after Sandy Hook when they pulled all AR’s off the shelf. About 10% of their revenue comes from firearms so I think they are counting on picking up that anti-gun crowd to make up the difference with their overpriced outdoor volvo crowd gear. Maybe so but everyone should shoot an email towards those companies that have come out in front of this crap and thank them for doing so and buy a firearm from them if you can.
Also, don’t forget Yeti. Those scumbags cut loose The NRA. Tell them what you think of them and patronize Orca or one of the cooler makers that firmly supports our 2cd Amendment rights. Don’t forget REI, also. Those POS’s also have jumped on the anti-gun bandwagon.

UpNorth

NRA-ILA is offering a sticker that says “I Stand With The NRA” and it’s sized to fit over and cover the YETI brand on it’s coolers. SO, if you own a Yeti cooler, don’t blow it up or shoot it up, just cover the name up.

I have several mom & pop sporting goods stores in town. One sells only guns and they are a bunch of pricks. I told one employee one day he was an asshole so I’m not exactly welcomed in their store. Well, he IS an asshole and the other employees are about the same. One of the other stores is great, selling everything from handguns, long guns, fishing stuff, archery stuff. I buy all three from them. Yeah, I can buy cheaper but couldn’t buy from nicer people an they aren’t a ginormous company. I recently began my archery hobby again so I’ll be going there to get outfitted. Cheaper elsewhere? Yeah, and I don’t care.

A Proud Infidel®™

Sounds like around my AO where there is a bigger Gun Store with a range but the last time I went in there they treated me like SHIT, basically giving me the attitude that I was supposed to kiss their asses at full throttle just for one of them to talk to me while I had the CASH to buy the handgun I wanted right there and then. My response? I walked right out of there never to return and straight to a nearby Mom & Pop Gun and Archery shop where they ordered the handgun I wanted and had it for me in a week for a few bucks less than the fancy shop wanted. The kicker? The Owner of the shop basically told me that the “Hot & Fancy” Gun Store pisses so many people off it nearly triples his regular business!

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

When I moved to Florida back in 2007, I started to go to the Delray shooting Center which was like 15 minutes from my place and it turned out to be the most unfriendliest place I ever went to. You had to buy their ammo which was not cheap. I bought a case of .45 ball and one of the workers opened it up and on each box, he put the store label on it with the label gun. When I got home, I just saved the store boxes and put my own ammo into each box to use up first. Every time I went to the range, the box was checked for the store label. Very rude people in there. I bought the Kahr single stack .45 there which was defective. I strained my upper pec muscle trying to rack the slide and had to use a glove with the little red rubber pips on the palm of the glove. The week after I bought it, I went to the range to try it out and after a couple of rounds, the mag fell out and I noticed that a square piece of metal at the rear of the slide fell off and was lying on the deck. I know that the owners son thought that I had dropped it and he wanted to give my money back but I traded it in for the Springfield XDSC .40 and used it till I bought their new XDE .09 from Gun World (Deerfield Beach). I only used Delray range for a short time and then I started to go down to Deerfield Beach twice a week. I found out that Kahr had a quality control problem at the time of the defect in the gun.

OWB

Same here. I always select the small, local store whenever possible. We have decades old relationships with the families. Not just sporting goods stores.

CAPT Jake

In central Virginia go to Green Top Sporting Goods.
Just off I-95 (slightly south of the Bass Pro store).
True professionals who know their stuff. (in the old Gander Mountain store).

Anyone visiting South Florida can stop in Gun World, store and range at 1700 S. Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach. Very friendly people and you can rent handguns to try and buy or just shoot. Their is a restriction on certain types of Mil. ammo like tracer rds which someone used and started a fire behind the backing. They even have a candy/soda machine in the rest area for you Geedunk Sailors. Kim owns the range after her husband passed on a couple of years ago.
