John Mahoney passes
Devtun sends us the sad news that actor John Mahoney has passed at the age of 77. He is best known for his role in the spin-off television show “Frasier” as Martin Crane, a cranky Seattle police officer who’d taken a bullet in the hip and then been forced to live with his neurotic son, Frasier.
He was a British citizen who came to the US at the age of 11 to visit his sister, a war bride of the Second World War. That visit influenced him to move here when he was 18, then he joined the US Army to speed up the citizenship process, and he became a US citizen in 1959 when he was 19.

He was only 15 years older than his TV ‘son’….premature grey hair will do that to you!
Used to(and still DO!) love Frasier. John Mahoney just had the “dad” look about him. Completely lost his british accent from being here so long, but he dusted it off one time on Frasier and I busted a gut laughing.
God speed John.
Mahoney’s character on Frazier would have fit perfectly at TAH. I can’t help but wonder whether Mahoney was that good an actor or whether his solid dickweed-like qualities flowed naturally.
So sad. My family has spent many a night watching reruns of Cheers and Frasier. We loved his role as the common sense approach father of Niles and Frasier. Frasier was one of the last sitcoms that I really enjoyed on broadcast television.

It really was. I always told people it was the last of the “high brow” comedy shows. Just genuine humor that didn’t resort to toilet gags, crudity, or sheer raunchiness to get laughs.

I never followed it when it initially aired, but have loved watching it in reruns.
My favorite characters are Martin, Roz and ‘Eddie’
Bulldog, Martin and Niles were my favorite characters. Absolutely loved this show.
TV shows suck today. Not one of them are worth wasting my time on.
