Thursday morning feel good stories

| November 2, 2017

From Frankfort, Indiana;

A Frankfort homeowner shot and killed a man he said had broken into his home late Tuesday evening.

Officers were called to a home in the 300 block of north Bunnel Street around 10 p.m. after a man called and said he had just shot an intruder.

When police arrived they attempted to revive the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Clinton County Coroner identified the man as Kevin Huffer, 37, of Frankfort.

Police detained the homeowner for questioning. His name has not been released and no charges have been filed.

From Belleville, New Jersey;

A resident fatally shot an armed intruder during a struggle with the would-be burglar late Tuesday in Belleville that also left the homeowner wounded, authorities said.

An armed man entered the Berton Place home around 10 p.m. and struggled with the resident, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. The resident was shot during the confrontation with the home invader.

“However, the resident then fatally shot the would-be burglar. After being shot, the unidentified burglar fled and collapsed in Nutley,” acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Belleville Police Chief Mark Minichini said in a joint statement Wednesday.

From Miami, Florida;

An investigator with the state attorney’s office opened fire inside a Perrine CVS after another man walked into the store and pulled out a gun in an attempt to rob it, police said.

The incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the CVS, 11503 Quail Roost Drive, in south Miami-Dade. An incident report described the man who fired a weapon as an investigator with the state attorney’s office, police spokeswoman Robin Pinkard said.

Police say the man who was shot left. Shortly after, a man with a gunshot wound showed up at Jackson Memorial South, according to police.

From Columbia, South Carolina, another internet sales goes poorly for the crooks;

“The female lures the guy into a breezeway, another male steps out has a gun, brandishes it,” Wilson said.

Luckily, the seller had a concealed weapons permit and shot his potential robber. The coroner has identified the man as 23-year-old Jaquel Deshawn Cornelius.

Jaquel Deshawn Cornelius.

*sigh*

Claw…this ones gotta score more than 40 on the TAH Scrabble.

26Limabeans

Dr. Cornelius played by Roddy Mcdowell.
I forget what his girlfriends name was.

Claw

The girlfriend’s name was Zera.

Claw

Correction; Zira.

AnotherPat

What is really sad about all the Scrabble names is that their parents gave them those names.

I’ve read studies that what you are bestowed at birth namewise possibly may/can have an impact on your life. Note that I use the word “may” and “can”.

Claw

TAH Name Scrabble (Home Version) score:

Jaquel Deshawn Cornelius (DRT Nap) 47×3= 141.

Bill M

Good score. Is that the all time high? Off hand I don’t remember seeing one higher.

Doc Savage

Those DRT/DOT score multipliers are a real monster…..and I don’t think I have seen a higher score either….We need an all time high score for 2017.

Good record keeping is so important.

Claw

The 141 is the high score for the year.

I don’t remember doing one/reading about one since TAH Name Scrabble (Home Version) started with a higher score.

To make the score of 141 official:

“So let it be written, so let it be done.”

Eden

We also need a batting line for this one. I’m not completely clear on how all that works (I think that’s Hondo’s department, and I AM NOT HONDO), but I think that should be at least two home runs.

“said he had just shot an intruder”

Never say that to a dispatcher.
Just sayin.

David

Pray tell, why not? Would seem to me admirably concise phrasing that there had a) been a shooting and b) that it was justified and the person doing the shooting had good reason to. What is the problem with that?

Graybeard

It depends a lot on the local DA’s attitude, as well as the local civil court situation.

Some “public defenders” don’t like the idea that citizens can defend themselves.
Some shyster lawyers will jump on anything they can to ding you in a civil lawsuit.

In my particular county and state, I’m not so worried about the DA or the civil courts.

That said, the rule of thumb is to remember that anything you say can and will be used against you. Self defense is not limited to stopping the perp who is attacking your or yours, but includes stopping overzealous anti-gunners and Diddndo Nuffin’s Mamma in the courtrooms.

Graybeard:

Have to hijack this thread when you wrote “in my particular county and state”…

Are you pleased with the outcome of the World Series?

Wonder if other TAH Texans are pleased as well… (Eden? Pineywood?)

😉

David

Amen. Both to being in an adjacent county to Greybeard, and to the ‘Stros winning!

AnotherPat

David, you are a Texan as well?

Congratulations!

⚾️🏆🤗

Fjardeson

Houston representin’. WOW!
FINALLY!

Another Pat

Congrats, Fjardeson!

😊

Eden

Absolutely! I came to the party a little late, not having paid much attention to baseball in general until the start of this NFL season and all of the related brouhaha. However, I’ve been keeping watch on the ‘Stros ever since. I had planned to take the family to a game in late August, but Hurricane Harvey scuttled that idea.

Item a) is all that is needed.
Then call your attorney.

UpNorth

What would you say? You sure as hell don’t want to tell the dispatcher you have a parking complaint.
Then again, he’s DRT inside the home, so I guess it is a “parking” complaint.

David

To illustrate Alabama law back when I was born (in the Truman administration) my father told the story of a New York fella who was driving in Alabama at night and hit two black pedestrians, flinging one of them into a field and causing the other to come through his windshield. The Sheriff, seeing that the driver was distraught, told him not to worry – “I’m charging this one here with breaking and entering and that one there with leaving the scene of an accident.”

Foxbat40

If you want to be absolutely safe you can say only that you require police and medical at your location.
Say number of people and that they have a gun shot wound.

Holster and conceal your weapon so the police don’t have a reason to shoot you when they show up. Advise the responding officer that you are concealed carry and do not draw the weapon under any circumstances. If he wants to disarm you let him do it or go to another room to remove your holster gun and all.

Docduracoat

The advice I have been given when attending a course on legal aspects of self defense
Call 911
Ask for ambulance and police
State you were in fear for your life and had to shoot to stop the threat
Hang up
When officers arrive
Comply with orders
State again fear for life and had to shoot to stop threat
Ask for your lawyer
Your response to any other questions is “I will cooperate when my lawyer gets here”
Even if you are In the right, anything you say will be used against you
Here is where carry insurance comes in handy as a lawyers retainer will be in the thousands or tens of thousands
I like the policy from USCCA.
NRA and U S law Shield also offer similar policies
