Zika virus found in members of military

| August 6, 2016

CNN reports that 41 members of the US military have been discovered to be infected with the Zika virus. One is a pregnant woman.

n addition, a senior State Department official told CNN there have been two confirmed Zika cases among US diplomats serving overseas. The diplomats were serving in countries where Zika has already been contracted.

The military tracks the number of cases reported among the ranks each week. Earlier Wednesday, the number stood at 33, but a new update has now been provided.

In addition, seven military dependents have been diagnosed with Zika, an increase of one case since the previous week.

The CDC says that contracting Zika is a minor event, only rarely resulting in death – that mostly unborn children are at the greatest risk for permanent injury.

Heard Buh-rock this morning, demanding more money for Zika research. He used the number of military with Zika to bolster his case, saying nothing about the personnel getting the virus while deployed.

Put obozo in a room full of these “sqeeters”!! maybe one of them will give him a brain? throw in obiden, boxer, whinestain,Ryan, Mcdonnell, peloser, on and on ad nauseum!!

UpNorth

Damn phone. So, Zika is a “minor event”, according to the CDC? Will they deploy some of their researchers to where the troops are deployed, to do their research?

LC

They actually do. CDC sends researchers into all kinds of hot zones – they call them ‘epidemic intelligence officers’ (in addition to also sending doctors who treat people). I’ve got a hell of a lot of respect for those people, especially when tackling unknown pathogens.

Pinto Nag

My respect for them dropped a few notches with the Texas Ebola debacle. No thanks to them we didn’t have an outbreak.

LC

I typically have little respect for most bureaucracies, though admittedly I don’t recall much of what the CDC (as an government agency) did that was wrong during the outbreak. But UpNorth specifically mentioned the researchers.. and those guys, the ones on the front-line who go willingly into hot-zones, I have enormous respect for.

Maybe a comparison would be the difference between a politically-motivated double-speaking 4-star in the Pentagon versus some Marines charging into a firefight. The former sometimes has my respect, but it’s rare.. whereas the latter always done.

Pinto Nag

Good point. Agreed.

CDC peeps sit enclosed in labs where the air is exchanged hourly and nothing harmful ever escapes the Petri dish covers.

That advice to wear long sleeves and use mosquito repellent won’t work for troops in the field. So what are they going to do about it? Stop Training?
