‘Extremist Islamic movement’ in Latin America

The Hill reports that US Southern Command’s commander, Admiral Kurt Tidd, is expressing concern about the incursion of Islamic extremists into Central and South America;
He also said there is some movement of migrants from the Middle East to Latin America.
“I think we are beginning to see people coming into this hemisphere who have very, very questionable backgrounds, and our law enforcement agencies are paying close attention to that,” he added.
Tidd said leaders acknowledged at a regional security conference in January that Islamic radicalization is a problem.
Back in 2007, we wrote about how Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, booted Christian missionaries from that country and replaced them with Iran-financed Hezbollah missionaries among the indigenous folks there. So there’s really nothing new about this other than the fact that Southern Command is just now taking notice.

‘Tidd said leaders acknowledged at a regional security conference in January that Islamic radicalization is a problem.’
Well, well, well. Another blinding flash of the obvious.
The Hizballah presence is more prevalent in the TBA (tri-border area between Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina), because of lax enforcement of AML/CFT regs that allow them to move money more freely.
The bigger problem is with some of these nations in the area that allow all sorts of questionable characters get citizenship via real estate purchases. They are aware of the problem, but it’s a cash cow for many of them.
Also, let’s remember that SOUTHCOM is not involved in armed conflict right now, so they are looking for resources, which they’re short on. Best way to do that? TERRORISM! Not that there AREN’T Islamic extremist groups down there. There are. But they’re not as prevalent as the media would have you believe.
Just sayin.
Wait didnt dubya buy a ponderosa in Paraguay
And the hits just keep on comin’…closer.
Abstract from Bureau of Counterterrorism, Country Reports, US Department of State: “Iran’s influence in the Western Hemisphere remained a concern. However, due to strong sanctions imposed on the country by both the United States and the EU, Iran has been unable to expand its economic and political ties in Latin America.” That was 2013. Gee, what has changed since then? Anybody?
And, then there’s this from SOUTHCOM’s website, “Promoting respect for human rights in Central and South America and the Caribbean is one of our top priorities. We have integrated respect for human rights as part of the SOUTHCOM mission since 1990.” That’s great. You’ll be pleased to know that “Human Rights” merits its own button on the website’s banner but counter terrorism doesn’t. BTW, does anyone Tidd’s shop know Fat Leonard?
The Admiral won’t have to worry much longer about them being in his AO.
They’ll all be up here flaunting their refugee visas. ..
When will ADM Kidd be asked to step down? After all, isn’t everyone supposed to be focused on Climate Change? /sarc/
(Tidd… Not Kidd)
“I think we are beginning to see people coming into this hemisphere who have very, very questionable backgrounds….” Questionable backgrounds? Nothing like calling a spade a spade. Beginning? I know that he knows better. It has been happening for years. How about this: The porous border and directed-lax enforcement of that border allows terrorists to enter the US with relative ease. We are doing our best to intercept them well below the border, indeed, as far down as South America, but their numbers are increasing at such a pace that some are likely to get through. The oBaMa administration has advised that I raise the matter, naming specific countries, such as Brazil, so that when the US gets hit by one or more of these terrorists, we can point a finger other than at ourselves. Thank you.
