Leland Yee sentenced
Nearly two years ago California State Senator and gun-grabber Leland Yee was arrested for conspiring to traffic firearms with organized crime. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Yee was sentenced to five years in prison today.
Dressed in a dark suit, a somber Yee had urged the judge to give him leniency, describing how he’s “ashamed” of his crimes and hoping to make amends to family and supporters. “I have taken full responsibility for my actions and crimes I have committed,” Yee said, his voice breaking. “That will haunt me the rest of my life.”
Yeah, I was shocked, too. But the prosecutor had asked for eight years, so he got off pretty easy, but still it’s more than I expected. The defense had asked for 3 months to 5 years.
I figured he’d get about 50 hours of community service to be served over the next ten years. I guess Californians take gun smuggling seriously.

Okay, the whole thing with an elected official is wrong and in my opinion, Lee should have been punished more. But Lee’s hypocrisy extended even further than that. Lee had sponsored a bill in California to limit the access of people under the age of 18 to purchase or possess or rent a video game (quoting the Supreme Court decision in BROWN v. ENTERTAINMENT MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION) “in which the range of options available to a player includes killing, maiming, dismembering, or sexually assaulting an image of a human being, if those acts are depicted” in a manner that “[a] reasonable person, considering the game as a whole, would find appeals to a deviant or morbid interest of minors,” that is “patently offensive to prevailing standards in the community as to what is suitable for minors,” and that “causes the game, as a whole, to lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors.” In a 7-2 decision (the majority opinion written by Justice Scalia (which is kinda of fitting for this), the SCOTUS said “no” to the law, affirming the District Court, and a appeal to the 9th Circuit. With his law nixed, Lee came out with a strong statement: “Unfortunately, the majority of the Supreme Court once again put the interests of corporate America before the interests of our children,” said the law’s author, Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco). “As a result of their decision, Wal-Mart and the video game industry will continue to make billions of dollars at the expense of our kids’ mental health and the safety of our community. It is simply wrong that the video game industry can be allowed to put their profit margins over the rights of parents and the well-being of children.” Apparently Lee missed the idea that actually selling illegal weapons is much worse and will cause actual injury to people as opposed to just depicting something in a game. The city by the bay is rife with corruption – the elected Sheriff is a convicted criminal himself, who was not allowed to carry a gun until recently.

The former chinerkid is very well educated so I will assume he knows the difference between those and that. In the pair of quoted sentences, “that” can refer only to responsibility. If the crimes were what would haunt him the rest of his life, he would have said “those.” So, in my book, he’s full of shit based on his word choice alone. (I know. My mind is truly a terrible thing.)
