So here is your weekend open thread. I wrote this last night because I’m on the road to a family affair in the Finger Lakes region. I’m almost there as you read this. That’s why I’m not answering your emails.

According to the CA Bar, as of August 14, Bernath was placed on the inactive list–meaning he is not currently permitted to hold himself out as an attorney in any jurisdiction. Not sure what the story is behind that, but his disciplinary hearing is still on for next week.
Hmm. Sounds to me like someone might be trying to wriggle “off the hook” by voluntarily going inactive in an attempt to avoid a formal hearing. But maybe I’m wrong.
If that was his intent, I can’t believe that it will be effective. The bulk of the disciplinary charges against him are for misconduct alleged to have been committed while he was in inactive status.
It would be funnier if he just failed to pay his bar dues… But you are probably correct that this was some sort of ham-handed “tactic” to survive this round and later work to get back onto the active list when it all blows over. Bernath’s problem, among many, seems to be that he is so unlikeable, so needlessly combative, so unprofessional, and so lacking in legal acumen that the Bar should instinctively look beyond any sort of tactic at this point and head straight to the merits of the Bar’s case.
On second thought, if I had to guess, my theory is that Bernath voluntarily went inactive based on whatever medical condition he is claiming these days, so that he can use his own story as evidence to corroborate his own claims in his defense.
That, or he’s up to something that he thinks is clever when it isn’t. I’d guess that he’s not going to go back to California unless he’s dragged there, willy-nilly

Does anyone know if he is still holding a private pilot’s license? With his self proclaimed medical issues, I cannot imagine him getting an FAA okay to continue operating an aircraft.
If I remember correctly, he has a Sport Pilot’s License which has much less stringent medical requirements than a standard Pilot’s License.
That I do not understand. Sport or standard pilot, he is still in the air with other aircraft and potential crash targets on the ground.

Word has it they (women) both failed both patrols in both mountains and Florida.
Word also has it that they were given third patrols and that General Scott Miller came down to be their walker/RI on these patrols, which they both subsequently passed.
Any one know if there is truth to this statement?

Both of the women failed several times and we’re finally passed in their 5th class. Before they began Florida phase, obama an ounce plans to attend the graduation of that class. It was predestined they would pass. Also, the RIs were not given access to their scores, and one of the women received a go on patrols for “motivation”. The whole thing was a farce

I’ve decided that I need to take it one more step, and go from traditional to primitive archery. I’m getting a 74″, 45-50 lb, handmade hickory longbow. I will also be getting the traditional, stone-tipped arrows to go with it.

Use beeswax to roll your bowstrings.
I currently have nylon (?) strings, and use regular wax for them. Thank you for reminding me about the beeswax!
I found that with real use, even with a fibreglas target bow, the twist of the string tends to come undone and needs just as much attention as the bow itself. If you’re going to use an ancient model bow, I think the wax generally used was beeswax, mostly because it was readily available. But you might want to check that.
Have you thought about making your own composite bow? I know there are kits for making your own bows and arrows.
And in asking that question, you just gave me more credit than I actually have, for three things:

After crossing over to the dark side (Marine Corps to Army) I have never understood the Army’s obsession with flair/merit badges.
Of course the new “humble brag” seems to be just wearing top 3 ribbons.
But we all ‘know’ what that BSM without a “V” really means……
I have been curious about something. Say a service man receives an award meritoriously without a “V” device and later earns the same award that rates a “V” device, does he just add a “V” and a little bronze star to the ribbon? Wouldn’t we then assume, looking at his rack, that both awards rated the “V” device?
I could be wrong; but, how I read AFI 36-2803 is one wears one and only one V device and an oak leaf cluster for a subsequent award.
So if a person gets a bronze star with V device and later gets a bronze star for meritorious service, that person would wear a bronze star with a V device and one oak leaf cluster.
If a person gets two bronze stars for merit, then a bronze star with an oak leaf cluster is worn.
If someone got eleventy-seven bronze stars for valor, only one V device is worn.
Perhaps one of the younger folks can clear this up.
I think you can trade 10 BSMs w/o V device for 7 ARCOMs and an Auto-Rifle device, provided that none of the BSMs were earned outside of the state of Wyoming.

You can only wear one V, so if you have 1 BSM w/ V device and 1 BSM or 2 BSM w/ V device, you would still wear a V on the left and a bronze oak leaf cluster on the right. That is the way I understand it anyway.

Eridani b has a hot Jupiter-type planet orbiting 1.3AU from the central star. It has now been directly imaged.

Wait a minute, is that a picture of a protoplanetary disk in the formation of a system?
I think the star itself is blocked, and 51 Eridani b is the bright blob just below center. The speckled appearance is diffracted starlight that leaks through the atmosphere that way. It is 20 million years old, per the article, so it may be post-protoplanetary formation.
The very first direct image of an exoplanet was of Fomalhaut b.

The speckled field is something they’re working on getting rid of, and Kepler and its successors may solve that problem. We’re getting closer and closer to finding twins for Earth that are within traveling distance. It will happen before too long. I would give it 10 years at most.

In addition, I have heard (a wee ‘lil black bird) a little known law provides for those with disabilities to attend via web, tele-conference and other means. Depending on the state you live in, hell you can even record it.

My AO is surrounded by wildfires tonight. I have an 88,000 acre fire about six miles to the south, a 55,000 acre fire just west of us that has closed one of the three escape routes. Just Northeast of here a 50,000 acre blaze is slowly creeping toward us. The big fire has closed off our escape to the south and a fourth fire is threatening to close off the eastern route. Our only way out is into Canada and they might not want to let us in as the Stickpin fire is lapping at the border with only four miles to go. It is going to be an interesting next couple of days.
The news last night showed a video of a wildfire some place. The speed at which it was moving was impressive.
Two years ago, the peat bogs in Siberia were so dried out from lack of rain that they spontaneously ignited and set local areas on fire. People were driving through these road-hopping firestorms with video cameras recording, just to get away from the fire.

I have been traveling far and wide, I have this habit of unplugging every once in a while and looking at those things we take for granted.
I spent last week staying up late and looking at the heavens, I watched the meteor shower and looked at several other things. I have a new telescope and have been struggling to learn how to use an equatorial mount.
I am in one of the few places on the east coast where the Milky-way can be seen clearly.
I have watched the wildlife and caught up on my reading. I have watched several old movies and even a few newer ones.
I have installed a backup generator at the compound so that we can always have power, even when mother nature decides to shut it off.
But most of all I have relaxed and thought about things.
I have read the site when I could but I will admit it has not been every day, or even every other day. I have stayed in contact with Jonn, TSO and others. But as all things must end so does my time away, the real world is demanding my presence and i have things I must do and people I must see.
I hope all of you have had a great summer.

I reported our fires yesterday in this space. This morning (8-22-15) that our 85,000 acre fire has grown to 126,000 acres overnight. The good news is that the wind drove the fire east and the northern line is holding so far. The Forest service came up this AM and said that we have a very defensible position and should the fire jump the highway they will get us a couple of pumper trucks to help us. I told them that they have my permission to water bomb directly on to our position. I prefer water to fire.

In the general AO as you 3/17… another smoke filled day, air quality extremely bad. Sunrise this morning is orange, reminds me of watching sunrise in Yokosuka, where the air quality was bad in the early 90’s.

Prayers out. I think that a lot of these fires are the product of the USFS caving to the tree-huggers wanting to stop as much timber harvest as they can. There are three kinds of fires, surface, ground, and crown. A surface fire is like when either a Rancher burns his pastures or a controlled burn in cultivated woodlands, it’s a cool temperature as far as fires go, it gets rid of weeds and scrub brush, and the ash helps replenish the soil when it rains. A Ground Fire is a fast-moving wildfire with higher temps than a surface fire which can kill plant roots and sterilize soil. A Crown Fire is THE most destructive It happens when woodlands are neglected, mature trees are not harvested and fall, controlled burns are not done, and when something ignites a fire, there is so much fuel on the ground the flames reach the trees and everything gets consumed, leaving nothing but ash. Select logging is one thing that could help, it would remove fuel buildup on the forest floor and controlled burns would help and nourish things.
We are located in the upper right-hand corner of WA. On SR 20, 7 miles west of Republic. The winds have almost died so the smoke is VERY thick right now. Visibility is down to less than 1/8 mile. The house is about 400 feet from the road and we can barely make out the highway. And Yes, I lay most of the blame for these fires on the Tree huggers that have taken over the Forest Service at the executive levels. The big fire to our south is on the Colville Indian Reservation so the Feds have little control over the tribes. The Tribe is actually pretty good at managing their forest lands. They thin, slash and do a good job generally. The national Forests, on the other hand are basically ignored. We have areas of insect killed trees and blowdown and they are a mess. Basically they are not managed at all. There is now access road maintenance done and the F.S. closes the fire roads rather than work on them. There are hundreds of square miles of timber without any access at all. Our state lands at least get a thinning from time to time and private lands are closely controlled. You would think the government would manage our resources a little better, but they could give a shit about our woods.
As I see it, the USFS neglects things right and left and labels that as “maintenance”.
Every spring, there are controlled burns around here to reduce the dead grass load in forest preserve areas. There are places where there is still dense woodland, but most of the area was maple, oak and hickory savannah long ago. There are places where the weeds need to be cut to reduce a fire hazard in the summer, but no one is doing that. It is not a good thing.

I live in the middle of it. One of the medium complexes is about 30 miles west-southwest of my house.
The smoke is almost overwhelming. At noon, the light coming in was almost orange and the visibility is down to between 1/4 and 1/2 mile. It’s even worse further up the Gorge (Columbia River Gorge). Heck, one of my friends in Colorado is complaining of the smoke from the Canyon Creek Fire Complex, and she lives in Denver.
Between the two states, Oregon has more acres on fire, more structures destroyed, damaged, and threatened. However, since it’s national news that three firefighters lost their lives in Washington, the President declared that state an Emergency.
I found a NASA video that showed how a small fire, a few hundred acres, exploded into 38,000++ acres of fire, almost in the blink of an eye.
That’s why I said this resembles the reports of the Peshtigo fire. It started with small fires that were smoldering, with all the right conditions to spread it, and it literally exploded into a firestorm.

Today I finally received a correct DD214! When I was discharged in 70, my 214 was all screwed up and dates were wrong so the college would not accept it for the GI Bill. A call to the CO of my last command got that corrected quickly with a telegram. Years later I noticed they half of the awards were also missing. It took a year to get a corrected DD 215. Then, I noticed it was wrong, missing some date corrections and the NDSM. I have been reissued all medals and ribbons every time I have asked for a corrected DD 215 and they always sent a new NDSM, but would not put it on the 215. I decided I would try one more time. I wrote a very detailed letter and provided three entries from my service record as proof. So, after 6 months, I got an “administratively reissue” of a new DD-214. I can hang my rack on the wall with the NDSM now. All of that over the damn GEDUNK Medal!!!!

Understand and agree. I’ve been getting some fantastic coaching out of some other authors on the business of writing and the Indy approach. One publisher I would like to be published by, but overall see a lot of what I do as remaining Indy.
For good or ill, I think Fandom is dead, while fandom is just starting to take off. If you look at WorldCon, the attendance tends towards geriatric, until the last two years has been dropping at a significant rate, and they still can’t get that there’s a problem.
Contrast that with DragonCon, SD ComicCon, and other events that are 10k plus, and very welcoming of Indy and others. Know where my time and effort will go other than into writing, as it is clear where the audience is headed. Only “literary” con that I will go to is LibertyCon, and I highly recommend it. Good crowd all around.

Skippy, he wouldn’t have jumped into Grenada with the 101st in 1983. The 101st went completely Airmobile in 1974 when the 3rd Brigade (old 173rd Airborne Brigade) came off jump status.
I could be wrong (I haven’t Googled it), but I don’t think the 101st deployed to Grenada during the operation. It was an 82nd Airborne deal.
Yep, I was right. Just checked the Order of Battle and the only outfit from Fort Campbell that went down there was the 160th Aviation Battalion.
No 101st ground troops, it was mostly the First and Second Rangers, 82nd, and Marines.

Farmers Almanac has released their prediction for the winter of 2015-2016. The Farmers’ Almanac official winter weather forecast for 2015-2016 just debuted and it predicts a very strong winter on the East Coast and in the Midwest, while western regions including, Colorado and Wyoming, may see more of a “typical winter.” According to this forecast, which appears in the 199th edition of the Farmers’ Almanac, and is determined 16 months in advance, the Pacific Northwest and California will possibly get skunked, and have more of a “mild” season. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the winter of 2015–2016 is looking like a repeat of last winter, at least in terms of temperatures with unseasonably cold conditions over the Atlantic Seaboard, eastern portions of the Great Lakes, and the lower peninsula of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, most of the Tennessee and Mississippi Valley, as well as much of the Gulf Coast. New Englanders will once again experience a very frigid (shivery) winter (Déjà vu). Much of the central United States will see near-normal winter temperatures. This includes the western and central Great Lakes, the upper peninsula of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and most of the Great Plains. In these areas, Ms. Nature will mix intervals of unseasonably mild temperatures with occasional shots of bitter cold; average it out and it comes out–average! Texas and the other South Central States will see a cool to cold winter, but nothing too extreme. Farther west, over the Rockies, the Colorado Plateau, Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest States, milder than normal temperatures are expected.
