“Bobby Thompson” sentence amended

| June 13, 2015

John Donald Cody

Chief Tango sends us a link to the Associated Press story about how the appeals court amended the sentence of a man who identifies himself as “Bobby Thompson”. His actual name is John Donald Cody and he was convicted of swindling folks out of a hundred million bucks in 2013 using his United States Navy Veterans Association charity. We talked about his conviction when it happened.

The judge had originally sentenced him to 28 years in prison and additionally sentenced him to spend every Veterans’ Day in solitary confinement. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the judge had no authority to sentence Cody to solitary confinement, even one day every year.

In a unanimous ruling Thursday, the 8th District Court of Appeals said the trial court had no authority under Ohio sentencing law to impose the solitary-confinement punishment.

The court also reduced Thompson’s sentence by one year, acknowledging Ohio courts didn’t have jurisdiction over some of the identity-fraud charges against him.

The fraud occurred in more than 40 states, according to trial testimony, and Thompson was indicted in Ohio in 2010. He disappeared for nearly two years and was arrested in Portland, Oregon, in 2012.

That’s too bad. My Veterans’ Day would have been a bit brighter had I known the criminal was spending the day contemplating how he had screwed veterans with his greed.

27 years. He’ll probably still die in prison.

We can always hope, but then, there are LOTS of veterans in prison…they might “talk” to him LOL…again tattoo the a.h.’s forehead with ‘THIEF”

I think Veteran’s Day in Gen-Pop will be “enlightening” actually. It’s unfortunate how many vets are locked up, and once his reason for being there too is discovered, they’ll make him feel real welcomed.

Guard Bum

Yup, I applaud the decision. Another day he can get buggered.

I’m sure the confinment officers will find a reason to lock him up on veterans day. They can be vindictive like that 🙂

Yep. Good call. The judge knew–or should have known–that once he sentences someone to prison, the body then belongs to another branch of gov’t and he no longer has control. The folks in the prison will take care of this guy, administratively. There is no inmate who doesn’t commit an infraction. Nothing will have to be concocted.

My druthers would be to have him spend every Veteran’s Day with some of his victims. Alternatively, they could have him share a cell with Bubba.

David

Or modify the “Count of Monte Cristo” birthday ceremony and flog him on Vet’s Day annually.

Hondo

This kinda falls into the “meh” category. He’ll still be behind bars.

And some of the folks in gen pop might take “real good care” of him on Veteran’s Day.

Jarhead

Regardless as to what a man has done to be locked up in a cage like a dog for the rest of his life, we must have at least some inner feelings of despair for this poor man.
Could we not show a bit of compassion and request donations for a family size jar of Vaseline every Veterans’ Day?

the Al

That depends- can we mix ground glass or sand in the Vaseline?

Silentium Est Aureum

Goats head barbs rolled in crap.

That’ll work too.
